The Boone County School District is a finalist for a national award.

Superintendent Bryan Blavatt held a news conference Wednesday to announced that the district is the Kentucky finalist for the National Civic Star Award from the American Association of School Administrators.

The nod is based in part on the district's diploma requirement program for graduating seniors and its focus on non-academic factors that result in first time jobs for students.

"Included in this particular program was the emphasis on school attendance, on promptness, on being in school on time and being in class on time and not missing very many days," said Blavatt.

The unique graduation requirement has been in place for seven years and also calls on seniors to make an oral presentation to a panel of local community and business people before graduating.
