From ABC7 News in D.C.:
Fire Threatens To Destroy P.G. County Courthouse
Wednesday November 03, 2004 9:02am
Upper Marlboro, Md. (AP) - Prince George's County firefighters are struggling to contain a rapidly-spreading three-alarm blaze that's engulfed most of the historic county courthouse in smoke and flames.
Fire department and EMS spokesman Chauncey Bowers says the fire on the 14,000 block of Main Street in Upper Marlboro began on the roof, in an older section of the building that's been under renovations.
Bowers says about 100 firefighters were on the scene, where they're battling high winds that are fanning the blaze. Broadcast pictures show a massive plume of black and gray smoke, along with flames shooting into the air.
It's not clear what caused the fire. Authorities don't believe anyone has been hurt.
A spokesman for the county's state's attorney's office says land records and criminal cases are at risk.
