While the code <b>IS</b>mathematically sound and the results have been published in a legitimate mathematical journal, someone went through Moby Dick and found a very similar code, indicating that in very large works, the law of random arrangement says that these types of arrangements will happen

This reference to randomness is the key in my opinion. I was given the original Bible code book to read back in the late 90's. I had been fascinated with the idea that there could be some hidden codes in the Bible. However, once I read the book and realized how the author came up with the supposed hidden codes, my fascination turned 180 degrees to total skepticism as my statistical side woke up. I noticed that the author used all sorts of ways to come up with code words such as going right to left, left to right, going right to left every other letter, left to right every fifth letter, down, up, down every fifth letter, up every other letter, diagonally down to the left, diagonally down to the right, diagonally up to the left, semidiagonally down to the right, semidiagonally up to the left, etc. Moreover, he often used synonymns. The point is that once one allows all these kind of ways to find code words, a computer is bound to find them or just about anything you want to find.
