There is a staph aureus infection that has shown up in Japan that is resistent even to Vancomycin. Just thought I would throw that bit of Info at you.
As far as worrying about bathrooms. I do an experiment in my classroom where students take swabs and grow bacterial cultures from a variety of places. They swab desks, toilets, water fountains, door knobs, etc. Every year and I mean every year the culture with the least bacterial growth is the swabs taken from the school restroom. The explanation is simply even with sloppy and haphazard custodial cleaning there is apparently enough sanitizer used to limit bacterial growth. Also the surfaces that are usually touched by people do not offer a very good environment for bacterial growth. Personally I am much more concerned about shaking hands with someone than I am about flushing a public toilet.
Just my Opinion,
Tim

Different sanitizers contain different ingredients, they usually do not contain anti-bacterial agents unless it is specified. Most I use contain the same ingredients found in my hand soap. I also use the ones that say moisturizing because the cheap soap used in most public restrooms is very drying, at least for me. I stay away from antibacterial items as much as possible. I try to never use them, not even at home. currently I use waterless or regular hand soap in the little travel containers and a damp paper towel....since we travel extensively and have 3 dogs there is always at least one bottle of water in the car and paper towels or napkins. If you turn the faucet off with a paper towel that's fine , but use it to open the door to the restroom and you might as well bring it to open the exit door to the store also. I would still guess your best bet is to wash or clean your hands after leaving any public place. I just didn't want to go into detail in the first post because it sounds crazy to go to your car, wet your paper towel or napkin with water, use your own soap and scrub your hands and forearms...people think I am wacky enough.
I did not mean to give the impression you should use anything anti-bacterial, I didn't think I did, but if so sorry. I meant sanitizing as it refers to cleaning or washing . Some people might immediately assume that refers to anti-bacterial, but I looked in the dictionary to be sure that sanitize was the word I wanted to use an it says---to make sanitary by cleaning.
I learned most of this growing up from my uncle who was EIS (Epidemic Intelligence Service) for the NCID.
I just try to do the best I can since my husband is a diabetic for 30 years and had Heart Surgery 25 years ago. His Immune system is not as strong as mine since he has these problems and is 63 years old...At 34 this was alot for me to learn to handle and through many classes and my uncle I have managed to keep him very healthy. His Cardiologist and Endocrinologist say he is healthier now than 20 years ago.
Again if you thought I wanted people to use anything anti-bacterial I am sorry, I did not mean to imply that. It is a very bad idea unless you have no other options.
Thanks for bringing it up GalvestonDuck in case anyone else thought that too.
