2 dead after standoff in Irving
By MATT STILES / The Dallas Morning News
IRVING, Texas - Authorities identified a man and woman who were found dead in an Irving home early Saturday after the man barricaded himself inside and shot at police.
Cody Southerland, 25, and a woman believed to be his mother, Susan Southerland, 48, were found inside the home in the 1200 block of Mistletoe Drive, the Dallas County medical examiner's office said.
Irving police on Saturday wouldn't release further details about the incident, in which Mr. Southerland fired shots at police from the home for several hours Friday night. No officers were injured.
Office David Tull, a department spokesman, declined to answer whether the man and woman were shot or say how they died.
The medical examiner's office said their causes of death were still under investigation Saturday night.
Officer Tull said officers fired tear gas canisters into the home. Asked whether police fired shots, he said he didn't know for certain, but they might have done so to protect themselves.
"There were a lot of shots fired," he said. "This is still under investigation."
Officer Tull said the standoff started about 6 p.m. Friday when neighbors reported hearing gunshots fired in the house.
When police arrived at the scene, Mr. Southerland fired at them with several high-powered rifles, he said.
