The youth services agency determined that he's ready to come home, and set a date of January 21st to coincide with the new school semester.
He's been in foster care for about 1 1/2 years and been through 3 programs. The third program combined placement, alternative school, individual counseling, and family counseling. He's made astounding progress, and the balance of the family has made steady progress. He's been coming home on alternating weekends, for about the last 4 months, and has done well. There will be followup family therapy for about six months after, and if all goes well, he'll be off probation a few months after that. We are so proud of him and happy that this is turning out this way.
He had taken a turn for the worse at the age of 8 or 9. He got into trouble for a number of small offenses, got "labeled" in school, got into the wrong groups of friends, and ended up in the special program at the district's "worst" school. He was finally taken out of the house after a violent incident. It was a big relief when he was placed.
Now he's a changed person. We've covered the root issues, made changes, made progress, got things resolved, and are all much better off. Still some challenges, but with the things that my wife and I learned, we are much better equipped. Too bad kids don't come with instructions!
Ryan is coming home!

Good morning Ed and family!
We stopped by Barnes and Nobel last night, and it was packed with books on every subject. But no where would you find a book that's entitled, "How To Raise MY Kids Through Every Possibility."
Life is a learning experience...and we never ever quit. It sounds as though the knowledge and preparation he has learned will be wonderful for him, and it sounds as though you too will be better equipped to deal with the trials that come your way.
This is wonderful news. For while you never know exactly what paths you all will follow, it is obvious that loving and caring are part of the foundation.
I wish you the warmest of holiday seasons.
