N.D. Sledding Accident Injures Dozens Of Kids :(

One Child Is In Intensive Care

POSTED: 5:15 pm EST January 1, 2005
UPDATED: 6:27 pm EST January 1, 2005

MINOT, N.D. -- Three dozen children who had been enjoying an all-night New Year's Eve party in North Dakota were injured in a sledding accident.

A police spokesman said the injured children were part of a larger group taking part in the party, hosted by a religious group. He said early Saturday morning, more than 100 children were using cardboard boxes to slide down a hill, despite a sign posted on the hill that prohibited sledding.

Police said about eight sleds, carrying up to 12 riders each, went down the hill in quick succession. Some of them hit rocks, a light pole and each other.

A hospital spokesman said one if the children was admitted into intensive care. The children range in age from 12 to 19.

The adults who were responsible for the kids should be punished in some way... doing the activity despite the warning signs? :grr:

I just read this article online Eric. I'm so glad my kids didn't participate in something like this. Using cardboard boxes and putting many kids on one 'sled'? A recipe for disaster. Sounds more like a frat party stunt than a church overnight activity!

Shame it happened though. There will be charges filed or someone reprimanded. Parents will be very upset I'm sure. I imagine most of the kids didn't even have boots or warm gloves for sledding - it was an indoor overnight wasn't it? Crazy!
