They drove him to hospital as a precaution only as he does not have anything more than the flu.I am praying for him.

VATICAN CITY (AP) - Pope John Paul II, who has canceled appointments because of a bout with the flu, was taken to a Rome hospital Tuesday night, according to the Italian news agency ANSA.

The Vatican earlier described the 84-year-old pope's influenza as mild but, as in the case of his past illnesses, gave few details.

John Paul has Parkinson's disease and suffers from chronic hip and knee problems. When he was last seen by the public, during his weekly studio window appearance Sunday, he was animated and in good humor, although his voice was hoarse.

The canceled appointments include John Paul's weekly public audience Wednesday. Besides the traditional morning gathering with the faithful, he had been scheduled to preside at a candle-blessing service in St. Peter's Basilica that evening.

The flu has been sweeping through Italy since December. The Rome region, which is shivering through a cold spell that has dropped temperatures below freezing at night, has been among those hit the hardest.

That is very sad news. Unfortunately, many people who get the flu at his age don't survive. Let's hope and pray that this is an exception. I am sure he is getting all the medical treatment available.

Two of the local stations here just reported that the Pope was rushed to the hospital because of a "crisis of larynx spasms". They both used the same phrase, so they were probably reading a wire report.

Not sure what that means. Breathing problems perhaps?

Evening news shows are just starting here too...

Urgent wire report... He is suffering from an acute respiratory infection. This doesn't sound good. Treatment was reportedly needed "immediately".

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope John Paul was rushed to a Rome hospital on Tuesday night suffering from an acute infection of the respiratory tract, the Vatican said on Tuesday.

The Vatican's deputy spokesman Father Ciro Benedettini told Reuters the 84-year-old Pope, who also suffers from Parkinson's disease, was taken to the Gemelli hospital just before 11.00 p.m. (1700 EST).

This latest information looks like it is not good for him but hopefully he recovers and I am praying for him.
