Think I've figured out why...

#1 Postby sunny » Mon May 02, 2005 7:54 am

my face and eyes have been itching so bad. I am developing an allergic reaction to Mary Kay products. A friend of mine sells Mary Kay, and was quite persistent. She is not going to be happy with me, but it's a stop off at Dillards after work today to pick up a Clinique 3-Step cleansing set.

Cindy - you may be right. Better to use what doesn't irritate your skin than to help a friend out.

I still use Cover Girl products, at my age. I have very sensitive skin, always have, and need to use very specific products. 24/7. I walk by those cosmetic counters at the mall and smile. No way am I stopping at one of those! I'd look good for about a day, my Visa bill would go way up and I'd be sorry later. Better to stick with what works for me. CG and minimally at that.

Hope you feel better. You might want to skip all makeup for a day or two. Until it setlles down. Another product I still use occasionally - Noxema! That can turn anything around, if I slather it on at bedtime. Maybe I just don't want to grow up? LOL I read an early interview with Laura Bush, during W's first term. She admitted she's a simple lady, wears drug store over the counter makeup. Then and there, I decided if that's okay for the First Lady, it's okay for me!

lol - Noxema! I haven't heard that name in a long time! I used to use that when I was a teen.

The problem is my skin is very sensitive. I did very well with the Clinique. I gave the Mary Kay a try, and although I think it's a very good product, I obviously cannot use it.

Mary, I am fair complected, and if I go without adding a little color to my face, people keep asking me if I feel okay :D

Cindy - pinch your cheeks!!! I'm fair skinned too.

I went thru a spell in my 20s where CG was irritating my skin. Went w/o makeup for a long time. Then tried Almay for a while. It worked well but was quite pricey. Compared to Clinique, I don't think Almay is expensive. And I see it's readily available at most drug stores. You could try it. It's very, very mild.

What I hate is when the manufacturer changes a product you've been using for years. I used a simple, moisterizer/foundation from CG. Came in a small jar. Never dried my skin out. And gave me color too. Then they reconfigured their entire foundation line. Took me a while trying them all out to find Moisture Wear in a tube, is almost what I used to use.

I also used Raintree moisterizers, two, one for daytime, one for nighttime. For YEARS. It was made by Noxell, the company that makes CG and Noxema. All of my skin products came from this company, at one time. Then out of the blue, they stopped making Raintree. That fast I had to try another moisterizer. Dang! I've found one, finally.

Almay? Hmph!

I tried that Almay Hypoallergenic deodorant once. We were out at the beach and everyone decided to go out to a restaurant from there (sandy clothes and all). Well, I had to have deodorant so I picked up the cheap stuff at a gas station/souvenir shop. Big mistake!

Let's just say I'm allergic to Almay.

This discussion is like a foreign language to me. For men, ya got shaving cream, after shave, and cologne. That's the whole mystique...sorry, but we're creatures with simple needs.

Clieque is really great, it has never reacted on my skin. Unfortunately my wallet cant cope with it's demands anymore  and I was desperate to find something that did the trick properly but did not irritate. I found that Almay was really great and reasonable in price as well. Oh and a trick I learned out of sheer desperation...If you really need cleanser and cant afford much, try baby wash! Honestly I have stuck to it because it cleanses properly and does not dry me out (obviously if you need something stronger for an oily complexion it wont do) I use my daughters Johnsons head to toe, works like a dream.

I have two daughters - one girly-girl and the other a tomboy. One day I noticed their bathroom was overflowing with Bath & Body Works products, makeup, shampoo bottles, etc. I kept taking it all out into the hall. Cleaning the bathroom very well, also clearing the space out from under their two sinks. Then I bought several baskets. I lined up the baskets, the recycling bin and the garbage can. I sat the girly-girl daughter down and said now go thru these 287 bottles of stuff....not really, but my gosh it was a boatload of samples, products she had bought over the year, etc. It was quite the production. When finished, the bathroom was very organized. BTW, this task should be done again....

I handed my tomboy daughter a basket (or a few more if she needed them) and said here you go, fill it up. She said - why do I need a basket Mom? All I need is a toothbrush, hairbrush/comb and deodorant! She merely asked for ~space~ on the counter! She also said I'll just share the shampoo and conditioner. And went off to ride her bike or something....

I used Clinique for YEARS. Since I was 18 and went to work and could afford to pay for it. My skin is very sensitive. Debbie kept telling me - oh, you'll be able to use this! Yeah - my throat is starting to swell. I did try the Almay at one point, but wasn't crazy about it. So I'm gonna go back to the tried-and-true.

Stormchasr - I'm not going to touch that one :D

Cindy - wow, I missed that detail. Wonderful nurse Jenn caught it though. If your throat begins to swell, that can be a very dangerous situation. My oldest daughter is allergic to peanuts/peanut butter. We keep an Epi Pen and Benadryl on hand for her. She has a set at school too. I developed a bee sting allergy at age 38. Out of the blue one day too, wham, bee sting by a yellow jacket and I was going into a full blown anaphylactic shock reaction. Now I have to carry an Epi Pen and Benadryl with me as well (only in summer, when bees are out).

Check in with us if you can! Now I'm worried too. And I can't believe I missed that one detail. So sorry.

Hi Jenn-

I am feeling much better today, thanks!!! I stopped on the way home and got my Clinique. The redness around my eyes is beginning to go away, and my eyes actually seem a little brighter today. My throat is SO much better.

Thank you :D
