Puzzling phrases and delightful (linguistic) dilemmas for pundits to ponder...

1. A single television is referred to as a "set."

2. "Bra" is singular and "panties" is plural.

3. "Slow down" and "slow up" mean the same thing.

4. "Fat chance" and "slim chance" mean the same thing .

5. A"wise man" and a "wise guy" mean the opposite.

6."Overlook" and "oversee" mean the opposite.

7. The third hand on a clock is referred to as "the second hand."

8. "After dark" actually takes place "after light."

9. "Tug" boats push their barges.

10. "Stands" are made for sitting.

11."Phonics" isn't spelled the way it sounds.

12. We put suits in garment bags and garments in a suitcases.

... and one more thought: When something doesn't work, we describe it as being "out of whack." Why aren't things that do work described as "in whack"?
