Two NOPD officers among four shot in rampage; suspect killed by police

A man apparently distraught over a domestic situation went on a rampage shooting four people, including two policemen, before being killed himself in an exchange of gunfire with officers at a police station late Thursday.

One of the victims, identified as the grandmother of the suspect's child, was critically injured. The other woman is in serious condition.

The injured officers were identified as Sergeant David Carter, a 25-year veteran of the NOPD and Officer Jon Steele, an 18-year veteran. Carter was in critical condition after being shot in the face and body. Steele was listed as stable after being shot in the shoulder.

According to NOPD spokesman Capt. Marlon Defillo, the suspect went to a house in the 2200 block of Franklin and shot the 2 women around 10:10 p.m.

Defillo said the suspect then went to the Fifth District police station on North Claiborne Avenue and exchanged gunfire with two officers, wounding them both before being shot dead.

"It goes show how brazen the criminal element is out here, and how police officers in this city put their life on the line everyday for the citizens," said Police Chief Eddie Compass, among those who showed up a Charity to check on the officers' conditions.

The second officer is in stable condition at Charity Hospital. The women who were shot were also taken to Charity. Their conditions are unknown

No truer words have been spoken,

My youngest brother is a police officer, and he said getting killed was probably the intention of the shooter. The cops call it assisted suicide. Sad.............
