{War} Missing US soldier found alive

#1 Postby BEER980 » Sun Jul 03, 2005 2:39 pm

Washington - One member of a US special operations team missing in the mountains of eastern Afghanistan has been rescued, US television reported on Sunday.

US military officials told CNN television that the rescued soldier managed to "evade the enemy" and had been successfully rescued by US forces.

CNN reported that there was no word on the fate of three other soldiers who were part of the same special forces reconnaissance team missing since suspected Taliban rebels shot down a US helicopter during an attempt to extract the team five days ago.

The MH-47 Chinook chopper was downed on Tuesday by what is believed to be a rocket-propelled grenade, killing 16 military personnel, including eight elite US Navy Seals.

A Navy Seal who was born and raised in New Orleans and attended Brother Martin High School was among the 16 American soldiers killed when their plane was shot down in Afghanistan Wednesday.

According to a spokesman for the family, Jacques J. Fontan was a 16-year Navy veteran and a seven-year member of the Navy Seals.

“He felt honored to be a part of the elite Navy Seals and serve with a great group of men in Seal Team 10 under President Bush,” said the spokesman.

Fontan, 36, was educated at St. Andrew the Apostle grammar school, Brother Martin High and SLU before joining the Navy.

He is survived by his wife Charissa, his daughter Jourdan, his mother Hazel Rue, father Earl Fontan, stepfather Donald Rue, sisters Suzanne Fontan Gonczy and Cheri Fontan Skop, his brother Jean Paul Fontan and his grandmother Maguerite Helburn Delchamps.

My mistake! You are correct it was Afghanistan. He was in his last week of war time deployment. He was going to be stationed back in the US.
