Mascot ban?

#1 Postby GalvestonDuck » Fri Aug 05, 2005 1:44 pm

As much as I despise the Seminoles, this can not be happening:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/8838557/

I had to look and make sure it wasn't April 1. Did I read that right? They're banning the use of Indian mascots after the season?

(And I realize this is sort of a sports topics, but it has little to do with the sport itself and more to do with post-season stuff, bands, cheerleaders, decorations, campus events, etc.)

That's like the Lawmakers of TX trying to ban "suggestive cheerleading moves" from all sports. Of course that "Booty" bill failed.

Yeah, but that was for high school, right? This is collegiate sports...and it's a done deal.

They're doing the same thing at Southeast Missouri State University, whose mascot had been "Ohtakians"; a little-known Native American tribe.

What SEMO will use as a replacement is anyone's guess. Next thing you know, PETA will want to change SIU's "Salukis" (an Egyptian hunting dog, one of the oldest breeds in existence) for fear of offending animal rights, and University of Missouri/St. Louis (UMSL) wil have to scrap "Rivermen" in favor of something that doesn't recall the steamboat era (cotton, slavery, whatever).

Yeah, but then they're pro, so not under control of the NCAA. Of course, I guess if students wanted to protest, they could wear tons of PRO team mascot stuff. Then again, it doesn't say students can't wear the shirts and so forth with the mascots. I wonder how they're doing that. After all, most of the time, those clothes are officially licensed NCAA products. If the students, alumni, faculty, and non-athletic staff paid for them, can't they wear them?

WHAT A BUNCH OF CRAP!!!!!

I am all for being "pc", but what is next? Are they going to outlaw the use of the term Rebels or anything to do with Dixie or anything that might suggest the confederacy? Oh and what if the "Irish" is found offensive by someone? The list could go on and on and on and on and on......

The now Stanford Cardinals used to be known as the Stanford Indians until the CA Liberals got all over them in the 1980's. Their big cheer was the "Axe" cheer. I'm surprised that they let them keep the name of the University since Leland Stanford was one of the Big Four building the Central Pacific portion of the Transcontinental Railroad which used coolie labor.

Exactly! Definitely gotta let names like Rebel remain. It can serve as a reminder...kind of like Forrest Gump's name.

"Now, when I was a baby, Mama named me after the great Civil War hero, General Nathan Bedford Forrest. She said we was related to him in some way. And, what he did was, he started up this club called the Ku Klux Klan. They'd all dress up in their robes and their bedsheets and act like a bunch of ghosts or spooks or something. They'd even put bedsheets on their horses and ride around. And anyway, that's how I got my name. Forrest Gump. Momma said that the Forrest part was to remind me that sometimes we all do things that, well, just don't make no sense."

With the exception of the Native American Schools in Wisconsin, the state athletic association (WIAA) has banned all use of 'indian' type words as school mascots (that means schools with chiefs, indians, redmen, etc had to change their mascots). Right now, there is one school in Door County that has not and will not change their Indian mascot.... there has been a huge ruckus about the name change.

Ironically, Marquette University has changed from Warriors to Golden Eagles (however, recently there was a HUGE outcry to change back to Warriors, but that was not an option during the school/alumni wide vote.)

And what of the St. Louis Blues? Would this be considered an affront to depressed people?

lol

the last time a poll was published on this subject 81% of indians were in favor of indian names being used. what happens is liberals find one 'offended" person, threaten lawsuits, and the colleges and pro teams cave. its similar to liberals using 1 person, nuedow, to erase god from the pledge for the 300 million rest of us. to be perfectly honest, i am sick and tired of "offended" people. get over it.

I read that as well; most Native Americans polled have NO problem with mascots, but the AIM and assorted other "PC" groups do...and it's these that want the name bans.

Then, I suppose that the Pistons might get some flack from the Auto Workers?

Now it's sports teams. Next it will be people offended at giving names to hurricanes. There was probably some guy named Ivan or Dennis who got bummed out about the destructive 'canes.

Let's not forget the Anaheim Mighty DUCKS (AFLAC!!); that might be construed as offensive to waterfowl, or encouraging "wantonly insensitive hunters". :larrow:
