Israeli warships shelled the Beirut airport today, hitting the runway and a parking lot, the Lebanese army reported. Earlier, Israeli aircraft bombed a runway shortly after it was repaired and reopened following airstrikes Thursday. The Israeli army said Hezbollah fired 20 rockets into three towns in northern Israel today, wounding at least six people.

Israeli ships, planes renew Beirut airport attacks
Lebanese leader calls for cease-fire

Friday, July 14, 2006; Posted: 9:05 a.m. EDT (13:05 GMT)

BEIRUT, Lebanon (CNN) -- Lebanon called for a cease-fire on Friday as Israel renewed its attacks on Beirut's international airport and Hezbollah missiles slammed into northern Israel.

Israeli warships and planes struck a runway -- just hours after it was repaired from previous attacks -- and a parking lot near the terminal, Lebanon's army reported.

Israel also struck fuel tanks at the Zahrani power plant south of Beirut, the Lebanese army said, and a road between Haboush and Iqlion el Tufah in southern Lebanon.

Hezbollah militants fired 20 Katyusha rockets into northern Israel, damaging property but causing no casualties, according to the Israel Defense Forces.

As the crisis entered its third day, Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora met in Beirut with ambassadors from the United Nations Security Council and spoke with President Bush by telephone, the prime minister's office said. (Watch smoke and flames from the airport attack -- 4:42)

According to a statement from Siniora, "President Bush affirmed his readiness to put pressure on Israel to limit the damage to Lebanon as a result of the current military action, and to spare civilians from harm," The Associated Press reported. The Bush administration did not comment on the conversation. (Beirut airport map)

Since the fighting began Wednesday, Israeli attacks on Hezbollah positions in southern Lebanon have killed at least 62 Lebanese, including two soldiers, and wounded 166 others, Lebanon's internal security forces told CNN on Friday.

Hezbollah attacks on northern Israel have killed two civilians, the IDF said, and more than 100 Israelis have been wounded in the attacks.

Israel launched the military operation against Hezbollah after its militants killed three Israeli soldiers and kidnapped two others from northern Israel on Wednesday. Five more Israeli soldiers have been killed in fighting since.

Israel's navy continued its blockade of Lebanese ports, including Tripoli, Sidon and Tyre.

Overnight, IDF warplanes attacked 18 targets in Lebanon, including the headquarters for the Syrian-backed Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine in east Lebanon.

Israeli planes also attacked Hezbollah headquarters in southern Beirut overnight, according to IDF. Bridges and roads leading to the offices were destroyed in the operation.

Along the Israel-Lebanon border, IDF attacked two Hezbollah outposts, a weapons storage facility used by militants and three fuel stations south of Sidon.

Americans in Lebanon were urged to consider leaving the country, and U.S. citizens were advised to defer travel to the region.
Israel: Lebanon held responsible

Despite statements from several countries -- including the United States and Lebanon -- that Lebanon doesn't have the capacity to extend its authority into Hezbollah-held territory, Israel has blamed the Lebanese government for the violence and charged it with the safe release of the soldiers.

Hezbollah, which enjoys substantial backing from Syria and Iran, is considered a terrorist organization by the United States and Israel. The group holds 23 of the 128 seats in Lebanon's parliament.

"There are a number of different strategic targets that we're hitting -- obviously the Hezbollah posts, their command centers and also where they store their weapons," said Capt. Erik Snider, spokesman for the Israel Defense Forces.

"We're also trying to hit other strategic targets where we know that we can prevent the re-arming of Hezbollah," Snider told CNN.

Israeli warships have set up a blockade, preventing cruise ships from docking in Beirut and cutting off the delivery of fuel used to operate Lebanese power plants. (Watch as fighting along the border intensifies -- 1:45)

Israeli Defense Minister Amir Peretz has said Israel won't let Hezbollah, a Shiite Muslim militia, return to the border -- raising the prospect that Israel may again occupy southern Lebanon, as it did from 1978 to 2000.

Under the treaty that ended Lebanon's 15-year civil war in 1990, Hezbollah was allowed to retain its weaponry to fight Israeli troops in southern Lebanon. It says it won't disarm until Israeli troops leave the disputed Shebaa Farms region near the Syria border, which the United Nations recognizes as Syrian territory.
Israeli troops pull out of central Gaza

Israel Defense Forces withdrew troops from central Gaza Friday after "completing their activities in the area," but Israeli troops remained in southern Gaza, the IDF said.

The army had been active in central Gaza in efforts to locate an Israeli soldier kidnapped June 25 and quell rocket attacks against Israeli citizens.

The violence continued, however, and on Friday morning four Israelis were treated for shock after Qassam rockets launched by Palestinian militants hit the border town of Sderot, the IDF said.

The Israeli army said it "hit" more than 30 armed militants overnight in land and sea attacks targeting seven rogue groups who, they asserted, were plotting against Israeli troops. The fate of the militants was not immediately known.

Iran backs Hezbollah (to the tune of $100MM a year). Syria backs Hamas. Toppling Saddam, a restraint on Iran, to replace him with a non-functioning gov't, a non-commital US occupation and a bunch of angry Shi'ites (also getting help from Iran) has emboldened Iran to exert itself as the regional superpower. I wouldn't look for their cooperation on the nuclear issue any time soon.

RE: air strikes on Iran, taking their facilities out. They might not be nice, but they're not completely stupid. They are believed to conduct their programs several stories underground, in urban areas, in a multiplicity of sites, so a strike is guaranteed to cause lots of civilian carnage. And unless you get 'em all, they're still in biz.

And North Korea doesn't go away because we're multitasking in the Middle East.

Anyone read any news from Afghanistan lately? Things like a resurgence of the Taliban, 5 interpreters killed on a US base . . .

Talk about a bigass mess!

Updated: 1:18 p.m. ET July 14, 2006
BEIRUT, Lebanon - The building housing the headquarters of the Hezbollah guerrilla group was destroyed in three Israeli aircraft rocket attacks on its southern Beirut stronghold Friday.

Hezbollah chief Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah was not hurt in that bombing, or a separate Israeli air strike that destroyed a building housing his apartment in a southern suburb of Beirut.

"Hizbollah's secretary-general, family and bodyguards are safe and sound," a Hezbollah statement said.

Just in this information from Beirut. The leader of Hezbollah was not there.

were they israelis killed by the rocket?

If so, Israel should retaliate by a massive campaign against the Lebanese civilians. Actually force the Lebanese government to quick making GD excuses as they have these past couple of days and actually take control of Hezbollah and disarm them. It would also serve as a warning to the rest of the region, terrorism will carry an incomprehensively severe price

The death toll in three days of fighting rose to 73 killed in Lebanon — almost all civilians, including five killed in strikes Friday — and 12 in Israel, including a mother and daughter killed in a rocket attack. The violence sent shock waves through a region already traumatized by the ongoing battles in the Gaza Strip between Israel and Hamas.

Derek above are the numbers so far of casualties on both sides.
