Arizona
Arizona did observe DST in 1967 under the Uniform Time Act because the state legislature did not enact an exemption statute that year. In March 1968, the DST exemption statute was enacted and the state of Arizona has not observed DST since 1967 (however, the large Navajo Indian Reservation, which extends from Arizona into two adjacent states, does). This is in large part due to energy conservation since the temperature in and around Phoenix and Tucson is hotter than any other large U.S. metropolitan area during the summer, resulting in more power usage from air conditioning units and evaporative coolers in homes and businesses. An extra hour of sunlight while people are active would cause people to run their cooling systems longer, thereby using more energy.

Here are some tips on how not to wake up groggy Monday morning, and for getting a good night's sleep year-round:

- Prepare for the lost hour. Chris Drake, senior scientist at Henry Ford Sleep Disorders and Research Center in Detroit recommends going to bed 20 to 30 minutes early on Friday night, and adding another 20 to 30 minutes on Saturday night.

- Don't sleep in too late and don't take long naps, says Drake. Both lead to fragmented sleep during nighttime hours, he says.

- Practice good sleep hygiene, says Michael J. Breus, author of "Good Night: The Sleep Doctor's 4-Week Program to Better Sleep and Better Health." Stop exercising, eating and drinking alcohol a few hours before bedtime. Avoid caffeine eight hours before bedtime, according to the National Sleep Foundation, an independent nonprofit organization focusing on sleep and sleep disorders.

- Make your bedroom sleep conducive, says Breus, with a mattress, pillow and sheets appropriate to your sleep needs. The room should be quiet, dark and cool.

- Wind down before going to bed, says Breus, whether it's meditation or reading a novel.

- Dim the lights a half-hour before going to bed, says Drake. Expose yourself to bright light in the morning, whether it's sunlight or from a lamp.

- For children, move their bedtime earlier by 15-20 minutes each night starting Thursday night, says Breus. Don't allow them to sleep in or go to bed late over the weekend. Make sure they are not eating a lot of sugary sweets. Don't give them sleep medication.

Start a wind-down process an hour before their bedtime, hygiene, reading, no Internet or video games, he says.

- Be alert when driving to work Monday morning, says Dr. Meir H. Kryger, director of Sleep Medicine Research and Education at Gaylord Hospital in Wallingford, Connecticut Research shows an increase in accidents the day after daylight saving time begins, says Drake.

- Finally, many fire-safety groups urge people to check batteries in smoke and carbon-monoxide detectors at the same time they change their clocks.

I work tonight from midnight to 8 a.m. so I'll get off an hour "early" :)

Then again, I guess I'll have a nine-hour shift come November.

Sounds good, but reality in my busy world....

Avoid caffeine EIGHT hours before bedtime? Don't eat or exercise a few hours before bed?
I'm not in prison! lol Sometimes that's the only time I can eat at night, or the only time I can find to exercise.
As far as those adjustments each night... dimming lights, wind-down process, meditating, etc. Oh just suck it up and lose the hour. :P Most nights, I only get 4 or 5 hours of sleep and a 7 hour night is like heaven on earth... I can't imagine having to do all this planning just to lose one hour of sleep. I never know how much I'm going to get each night anyway, and since I don't have a "set" bedtime for myself, I wouldn't know when 20 or 30 minutes earlier was.

I'm glad you posted this though, cyc. If this seems normal to others, then I guess my unstructured nights aren't as run-of-the-mill as I thought.

Another reason why Arizonans don't want DST (aside from the fact that who the (bleep) wants an extra hour of daylight in the evening when it hits 115F in the shade during the day) is that a lot of people like to jog or exercise outside before going to work and while it's still cool enough to do so. As a general rule, Summer sunrise is around 5:30 AM which gives someone enough time to do so before having to get ready to go to work whereas with DST the sunrise would be at 6:30 too late to do so.

I don't think we should change the clocks in the first place, I see absolutely no need for it.

I hate having to change the clocks for this. It is unnatural.

To each his or her own-being an amateur astronomer, I despise DST.

One thing good about DST is that it is easier to move the clocks ahead than moving them back. All the automatic clocks (cable box, computers, cellphone)changed ok. Still working on the rest. . . alarm clocks were changed last night, stove and microwave clocks are changed. .. next, I have 2 timers ( for 2 lamps) to adjust that will take a week to get straighten out and the clock in car which I have forgotten how to change . . . now I need to get my brain on DST, I keep thinking its 5:45, not 6:45

I also hate DST. I would rather have it be light early than late.

I like the fact that when I leave work in the evening it'll still be daylight. I just hate the first day when you "lose" an hour.

I would rather just take the sunrise and sunset at their "normal" times. I would miss the late summer evenings though.
