snip <Yes, david, but consider this...if everyone adhered to most of the principles thus embodied (saving those specifically mentioning Shabbat, God), this would be a MUCH better world in which to live, n'est pas?>

wow, I am agreeing with you again streetsoldier. i would not have a problem with the posting of a "moral code" in classrooms. one that does not mention G-d or the sabbath.
eg

do not steal, lie, kill.
honor parents, elders etc

peace

What is happening to this country? We are suddenly turning against each other. We certainly don't appear to be one nation "united". People are protesting 'One nation under God", actors are on televison protesting the war and President Bush. From the outside looking in, we mustn't look like a "happy family". We look like we are angry, hostile, troublemakers.

We were also not very united during the Vietnam War - what is occurring is the American way.

If you don't believe in God (or a God), then I think that you may also choose not to state "Under God" as you are reciting the pledge.

America has a long history of airing our disagreements openly. This is the very thing that makes this country great! While I disagree with a lot of others opinions they have every right to voice them. The one thing that always prevails though is that when the chips are really down, Americans unite!

All those left wing liberals in California, including the judges on the appeals bench, should turn their "In God We Trust" money over to me. I could sure use it.

What I think they are saying is that God is not appropriate for everyone. That's what makes America special. However, in my opinion it does not mean that our pledge should be devoid (and our currency) of mentioning God.

"I fear for my Country because God is just, and His Wrath cannot be constrained forever."

Streetsoldier, once again your words ring true. I know there are many who do not believe in a higher power, that is your opinion, and I shall respect that. But believing in the almighty myself, I am ashamed at the human race "how dare we put God in a box and see him only in our narrow 2 dimensional way? How grateful I am at the saving grace that is Jesus Christ"

You are right streetsoldier our God is a jealous God who can not and will not be made a mockery of. I think many people forget the awsome power He holds. God is the father, and a good father disciplines his children. Nuff said!

Heres one for you....

The pledge is something that I grew up on. I work at the YMCA and we are a CHRISTIAN organization that DOES NOT turn people away because of their creed or nationality. We welcome all nationalities and creeds, because that is what makes us America. We are such a melting pot, that the pledge is something that brings us together.

Before YMCA swim meets, we say the Pledge and salute the flag. Its something we are accustomed to.

Because of this "Under God" situation, I have a feeling that our fore fathers are rolling in their graves right now.

If you think this is a debate read the numerous articles on Toni Smith, the Manhattan College student that turned her back on the American Flag during the National Anthem before the game.

As long as there are exams in school, there will be religion!

Just as an aside...does anyone remember when American kids said the Pledge of Allegiance with their right arms raised, pointing to the Flag, but with palms UP? :o

(I do...way back in parochial school under "Sister Mary Discipline" in 1st Grade...)

I am a Native Californian, and yes, while we do have our share of leftys..we also have a great number of Conservatives, albeit not mentioned much in the Media.Mentioning Media, how many Lefty Nuts live in NYC or Boston?Hmmmmmm.Last time I checked, those are Right Coast Cities.
I am much like most Baby Boom Left Coasters, more moderate in my views,we tend toward a more centrist voting pattern, rather than the age old and very musty,Party Line Voters. The times, they are a changin'.

I question the actual motives of those championing this cause and clogging up our court system. Surely it must be to make a name for themselves; stand in the nat'l spotlight for a time.

I'm astounded that 2 words would cause them such distress? GET A LIFE!
