I'd much rather see the proposed budget shifted to homeland security and defending our borders.
Exactly j... and Jara, with all due respect I disagree.
You can spout numbers all you want and they look very large, but when it comes to dividing the money up, it isn't much.
I am glad you're daughter is doing well in school, but if there are hiring freezes, teachers laid off, new computers and textbooks unable to be purchased, extracurricular activities pulled, bus service being pulled I don't think we have enough money going to our schools. In the end, the generations that come after us won't have the tools needed.
Picture this... you mention cancer cures possibly being found on Mars. If you raise the price of tuition so high at a college/university that most can't attend you may miss your opportunity to train the person who develops what you find a vaccine. That may sound extreme, but it is not.
If we don't secure our borders and allow terrorists to cross over them and create havoc with terrorist attacks, what good is that key to reducing greenhouse gas??
My answer is simply this... we will never live in a perfect society, but there are many things that I believe need to be improved here first. If we then have the money, THEN go there.
How about this... would you give me 29 billion dollars right now to practice building cars that MIGHT withstand an asteroid killing the person inside should that ever happen?? I would hope that you would say no. Why? Because I believe that we are provided for and the person in charge of that isn't our president. I think you know who he is.

Okay...how much? The reason our schools are suffering is because of Government, not the lack there of. You have how many people on a school board? Have you been to your school board office? I provide computer services to ours. There are three people at the receptionist desk? 3 employees at a desk just to receive visitors. Consider the below statement:
Experts predict that over the next ten years the nation will need 2.2 to 2.4 million teachers. That means there will be 150,000 to 250,000 openings for teachers in the nation's elementary and secondary schools. The needs are greatest in urban and rural communities and in curricular areas such as special education, mathematics, science, bilingual education, and English as a second language.
The shortages continue because while student enrollments are rising, teachers continue to retire and many new teachers leave the profession in the first few years.

Here again government is the problem not the solution:

So...because of terrorist we must worry only of our borders. Without space exploration, we would not be able to hijack sat phone traffic, (or even have sat phones for that matter.) We could not spy on terrorist training camps. Without GPS, developed in space, we could not even mark where they are. Terrorist can not be allowed to effect our ambition for discovery or they have already won.
Finally...

You forget, that "Person" gave us a free will! I'm not sure that he did not create the heavens for us to explore and grow. Did God give us the Polio Vaccine or did he give us the ability to find that vaccine? The good Lord gives us the skills to survive, but does not pre-ordain it or if He/She does, then I guess the whole free-will means nothing.
The advancements we as humans and Americans have made is because of our willingness to grow and expand. To chase new dreams and places. I submit to you that the Government welfare state is snuffing out that willingness. I say it is high time we chase the next great frontier or dream. I think one more handout, is the last thing Americans need.
