My school district is doing some pretty stupid things right now too but NOTHING tops what Nashville has done. This goes beyond idiocy.

The latest stunt in my district is, in the future, making it MANDATORY for ALL students in an AP course to take the AP test at the end of the year. It's such bull. A lot of people take AP courses because they want to above what the regular courses teach. Yes, the majority take it to pass the AP test and get college credit, but it is unfair to force kids to pay the $50 and take it.

What a load of crap! I guess the saying that everyone rises to their own level of stupidity applies to the Nashville School Board and their lawyers!

This ticks me off beyond Belief. They earned the right to be on the honor roll. But since LIL billy didnt get good grades we cant make him feel bad by honoring the kids that did??? What a bunch of BS..

GREAT point and that's why, while I think this proposal is completely moronic and way too extreme, there has to be some limit to how much schools glorify those who succeed and, more importantly, look down upon all those who don't. Surely a lot of the ones who have problems don't succeed mainly as a result of apathy or lack of motivation, but I'm sure there are some who try very hard and just can't manage to get on the Honor Roll, and I genuinely feel bad for them.

There was a girl at my middle school.... she had provlems walking, with people, etc. She got on the 4.0 honor list everytime. Why? She does no work. Other people, like me, do alot more work, and have more homework then the others, and get a 3.5.

Maybe I should act stupid, get into a class to help, and i'll get more time to do my work and get a 4.0. Yay!!!!!!

It's just a "typo"...I do it myself sometimes.

Back to the main point...if a school district offers no incentive to excel, the kids WON'T. Think about THAT for a minute. :grrr:

I think it [is also] unfair for some states to have statewide exams, in some cases the teachers don't even cover the material that is on it.

The statewise exam (in Massachusetts) I took was at the time experimental, to see how students did on them before making it so that you have to get a certain score in order to graduate high school.

Yup, David made a proberbial, I mean a proverbial typo. :) After I make a typo I try to remember to correct it, even going back to the thread I made it in after a number of minutes has elapsed.

And I just made a typo joke.........

You're right Streetsolider, where is the incentive for the kids to push themselves.......

Wait a minute, shouldn't that come from their parents and within themselves also ???????

I mean it's the whole ball of wax isn't it ???????

I just don't know if there's evil people somewhere planning all this stuff, actively plotting to bring down this great nation, or if this nation is just careening out of control because we're too preoccupied with Janet Jacksons ****?

Parental encouragement and imposed "discipline" should be a factor, particularly in the early years; by high school, the students should have acquired the SELF-discipline to "get it right" on their own.

Sadly, many parents, rich and poor, have either given over their role, or been "forced" to do so by an increasingly paternalistic and invasive attitude of the SCHOOLS as custodians of the children, in loco parentis (in the place of the parents)...accent on the word "LOCO". :grrr:

I think the schools should also give tests for common sense. Case in point.
My sister-in-law. She is one of the smartest people I know. She was on honor roll all the time, did very well in collage, the job she has now she gets paid thousands of dollars for a few weeks work. The problem? No common sense. She does some of the stupidest things that you could even imagine. She will do stuff that she thinks she will get away with because she's so smart. You give her your opinion and she starts in on how much schooling she's had. When the thing that you said might happen does, she breaks off contact. Even her mom says she has no common sense. That's why I think there should be testing for it in school. Plus she's mean. She sneaks around and says and does things that she thinks you won't find out about. There just has to be more out there like her and they're probably TN school board lawyers.

I think it is ridiculous not to recognize scholastic achievement. I rarely got such recognition, but I did not begrudge or becoming jealous over those who did. In fact, I thought it was great to know who was getting the best grades. If I was ever struggling with a subject, I would know exactly which students might be able to help me learn the material.
