Did you, do you, spank you children?

I was spanked as a child and I spank my stepdaughter. Its not a beating its an spanking followed with a grounding. Most of the time its for her attitude.

My parents believed in spankings. Was I warped because of them - no - I respect discipline and follow the rules. Which now days so many kids don't want to do or feel they have too.

I got spanked so many times when I was little, my butt is flat! :wink:

It's funny that this subject came up, as last week I gave a spank to my daughter for the first time when she pushed down her little brother. Just one swat on the tush, followed by a 5 minute "time-out", did the trick.

My parents made me drop my drawers but not my underwear. I don't see a problem with that, but I wouldn't spank bare bottomed anyway.

I don't think i could get myself to spank my kids. But i was spanked and i definitly think i was made better for it. Once again i don't know if i could actually hit MY child though?!

As a former teacher, I've seen some I'd love to "HIT"

I remember one student my 2nd year of teaching. I had 3rd grade. She was a "hellion" from day one! I'd paddled her and sent her to the office a few times. On this particular day, we were taking a test. She decided she didn't want to take the test and threw her paper on the floor. I wrote out a discipline form and sent her to the principal, as I knew paddling her wasn't helping. The principal sent her back to the room and the kid got her test done. A few mins later, there was a knock on my door. I answered it. The girl's father was standing there. He asked me if I had a paddle. I said yes and he asked to borrow it. MAN, he got her good! I counted 3 licks and stopped counting after that. I felt sorry for her, but knew she needed something that I couldnt' give her. Needless to say, after that day I had no more probs with her.

Given my childhood experiences...18 years of beatings, verbal and "food-sleep deprivation", etc. abuse, plus that endured at school from even strangers (kids I didn't know), I decided that what was done to me will NEVER be visited on my kids...and I've held to that.

My answer is NO.

A good, hard spanking every so often (which with today's kids would be at least once a week) is a good way to teach the kids discipline and right from wrong. If we had more spankings, especially the very hard paddlings and knuckle crackings in the schools, I gurrantee that at least 50% of the problems with the kids and nearly all of the school shootings will be eradicated

I believe there is a right way and a wrong way to spank a child. The right way is to use the child's bottom. 1 to 3 licks on the bottom is sufficient to make a difference. Beating a child, slapping a child in the face, or anywhere else but the bottom is not the right way to spank, in my opinion.

We don't spank...we take things away that mean alot to them, and good old fashioned "groundation" works well in my household!

Brian does something that the kids really hate...he makes them write sentences..OMG...they sometimes BEG for a spanking, because they hate writing so much! Thats when you know your discipline is getting through to them, and it does seem to work with our children!

j..I agree with you on this one. I was 17 years old the LAST time my dad made me pull my pants down for a bare a**ed spanking...it never happened again. Its sick...isn't it? I never got over resenting him for that. Its just plain wrong.

I was spanked as a child. And had several nuns hit me on the palms with a ruler - sick, if you ask me. Yes I learned to write well, didn't quite learn math as well though. LOL But all those nuns had to do was walk past your desk, their habit and dangling rosary swishing to and fro, and tap that ruler on their own hand and you were instantly in line. And petrified at the same time. Now I think that type of 'teaching' is plain wrong!

That said, I've spanked my kids just once or twice each. Laura has always been my handful - stubborn, on the lazy side and Nina more willing to do things on her own. But early on I decided not to spank anymore. Jim can honestly say he's never spanked them and I wish I could say that. But I did change my parenting behavior. We did time-outs a lot when they were little, and now take away certain privileges to discipline our kids. That seems to work, most of the time. I have a sister-in-law whose house is immaculate, everything is in it's place and the kids know what their duties are. They seem to have very little down time. It's run like a boot camp over there. I've heard the dad has had to wash the kids' mouths out with soap to discipline them. No spanking. Usually all I have to say to get my girls in line is - do you want to live at Aunt Lori's for a while? Or have your mouth washed out with soap (I would not do that!)? That's all it takes since their cousins have complained how strict their house runs.

Mary...my mom put soap in my mouth once, and my friend jessica was over, and she asked my mom to give her soap in her mouth as well, and we laughed about it, and blew bubbles. My mom figured I'd outgrown the soap punishment at that point!

Not the soap!!!! I can still, at the age of almost 34 taste Ivory soap if I think about it. Blech!!!! And then there was the Cayenne pepper :grrr:

Stormraiser/furry - my brother-in-law definitely uses Ivory Soap! Well, we are all from Cincinnati too, P & G's capital! LOL I think I had my mouth washed out with Ivory too, but only once. That's all it takes to never forget that awful taste! Blech, is right!!!

Fur - I imagine your mom was wringing her hands that day!!!

I got my little butt tore up many a time. I went to catholic and private schools where a spanking was the norm back in the 60's. I spanked my three sons. Every time they got it they deserved it. My eldest son is now a proud father, responsible member of society, due in part to corrective discipline. Here in Mississippi, corporal punishment is legal and was frequently invoked in my household. I think more young people should be spanked as it reinforces the consenquences of inappropriate behavior....MGC
