Federal judges ARE appointed by the President, subject to Senate confirmation...the bad news is that most of the judges we have seated on the benches now are Clinton-Carter appointees, and they have the idea that "the laws are whatever the judges say they are", rather than holding strictly to the laws as written.
As to Peterson, I concur that the lies, audiotapes, escape attempt, etc. are VERY strong circumstantially...but then, there's that missing girl from his college days to consider...the last person to have been known to be dating her is "you guessed it!"...and she has never been found.
Why the prosecution isn't looking into this girl, in light of the allegations surrounding Peterson, baffles me...it could establish a "pattern".

CNN's website has daily article updates/testimonies. Family members/cleaning ladies/spa employees are coming forward to give their testimonies.
I suspected Scott was guilty from the beginning. Mainly because so many spouses and parents (of children) have been found guilty of murder. Naturally you are suspicious now when a story breaks like this. I just didn't buy his story - she was 8 months pregnant and he wants to go fishing all day long on Christmas Eve Day? That just didn't sound right to me from the start. This was their first baby and most parents to be are very-very careful at this stage. And finally, the reason I believe he's guility is his behavior once Laci was reporting missing. We never saw Scott tear up/sob (as her Mother and Stepfather did), never saw him relentlessly out in the community, actively searching for her. He should have been FRANTIC! Okay some of you may say, maybe Scott is the type that doesn't show his feelings well. Then why did he try to sell her car and redorate the nursery? Didn't he even try to sell the house? I forget some of these details but each time the press would show him golfing, hair dyed a new shade, or trying to sell a car, I immediately thought - this isn't proper behavior for a grieving husband and father. I would like to think if I were missing, I would hope my husband wouldn't be able to sleep, eat, go to work, golf, function at any normal level. My God - this was his wife and son!
Just felt compelled to explain WHY I think he's guilty.

Update, September 21, 2004:
From the CBS website....
"Scott's Theory On Laci's Fate"
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/09/ ... 1756.shtml
quote from article:
Modesto police Detective Craig Grogan said Peterson theorized "that she had been wearing jewelry that she inherited from her grandmother and that he'd seen her wearing it on that morning, and when she went into the park a transient had robbed her."
