Oz wasnt colorized. It was filmed in color. Or at least the Oz portions of the film.

Yeah, it was always in color in Oz. The Kansas scenes were done in sepia.

The ruby slippers were silver in the book, but they made them ruby to show off the new Technicolor technology. Perfect movie for doing that - ruby slippers, yellow brick road, rainbow, etc. The horses were colored with powdered jello.

It's all just so dramatic when it happens (when Dorothy walks through the door), that you forget that the color was always there.

I have to agree with beachbyrd, the "specialness" of a broadcast of the wizard of oz is gone since video and dvd. In those days, we would stay home to see the movie and get special snacks for it. It was a big deal. Same thing with the classic Christmas shows. Now they can watch any movie or show any time. Not the same.

Thank you for clearing that up about the color, it confused me, because I was not sure if I had ever seen it without color! Now I know why!!

Yeah the Christmas movies were also anticipated for weeks before! It is different now...

Yikes, you are SO right! I had been told that each frame was hand painted and the original was B&W. It was so long ago when I was told this, I just always believed it! By the time we had a color TV in my house I was almost out of high school and that was the first time I saw Munchkin land in color anyhow.

Thanks for the clairification. I checked an OZ FAQ web site and what you say is correct.
