Thanks for the updates, gang! Of course, shortly after I posted my request, I couldn't get back here...nor to FoxNews or any other news sites or message board sites. It was goofy. I could get to our server and the server of one of our medical records vendors. I could even get to Snopes. But S2K, Yahoo, Google, all the major news sites and all the local news sites were inaccessible.

Then it was time to go home and I went to Bayou Vista with my best friend and we went out to dinner with her hubby. A short time before I got home, I got a cell phone alert from FoxNews with the update of 14 dead.

People were talking about it in the restaurant, but everyone had conflicting information.

Sad.... :(

This plant supplies something like 1/3 of the gas or something that raises the octane, not exactly sure what, in the country. One report is that gas has gone up .03 already this evening due to it or will go up that much due to the explosion.

Didn't have time to watch the news last night, what a tragedy  I can only imagine the impact it's had on the local areas!

Beer, your RIGHT.......ANY excuse for the oil companies to bend us over the barrel even MORE! It's about right, the oil companies will USE this tragedy to THEIR advantage at ANY costs, even the cost of THEIR employees loosing their LIVES!

gas in our area went up to $2.19 from $2.14 in about 24 hours right after the explosion... I guess you can tell where we get our gas from!

Yes, it's known as the Texas City Disaster. On April 16th, 1947 a little after 9AM, the ship Grandcamper had been burning and exploded. It showered burning debris everywhere and ignited other nearby ships and refineries. The blast was heard 150 miles away. The blast also caused a a 10 ft tidal wave.

The ship High Flyer was also loaded with ammunition and also caught on fire. They tried towing out of the harbor but decided there wasn't enough time and evacuated the town. At around 1AM on April 17th, the High Flyer exploded.

In the end, 581 were dead and thousands more injured.

It's the worst industrial accident in U.S. history.

BP settles lawsuit with victim's family as well as pledging donations for schools and medical centers: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20061110/ap_ ... plosion_13

Although I don't work in the burn unit, this is nice in light of the recent troubles at UTMB.
The adult burn unit at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, which treated 23 victims of the blast, will get $12.5 million

(Note -- topic title changed from "BREAKING!!!HUGE EXPLOSION TEXAS CITY!!" to current one to avoid confusion and concern.)
