Like I said somewhere before, I have a Motorola Walkie-Talkie that has a built in Weather Radio, and it has an Alert feature that you can set on it... you don't even need to be on the weather radio to hear it. It is really cool... not that expensive either!
It's cool to use... if I go outside with my friends when thunderstorms are in the forecast I take it out with me just in case a warning is issued.
Tornado Sirens?

Is your alarm feature left on?
I do Steve....and the alarm mode is always left on. I purchased a NOAA wxradio model with the S.A.M.E. (Specific Area Message Encoding) feature in 2001 so I could program in just my county and counties located immediately to my NW, west, SW, and south.
Take care,
Perry

We don't have tornado sirens here in central FL (well maybe some, but none near me). The only warnings I know of is the Emergency Broadcast System that takes over local tv stations and radio stations that sounds loud beeps followed by the warning. Is the Emergency Broadcast System nationwide?

Jen, the "Emergency Alert System" replaced the "Emergency Broadcast System" in January 1997. The "Emergency Broadcast System" was established in 1963.
The "Emergency Alert System" is a nationwide system.
Perry, I will probably get a NOAA Weather Radio with S.A.M.E. (Specific Area Message Encoding) technology soon. Not sure how soon. It sounds really neat especially living so close to two other counties.

Jen, you are hopelessly being sucked into a group of people whose passion for weather you will never understand. Just look at your poor husband sometime when a storm is brewing and he's at a party or something where he can't get outside to see it. He paces the floor, doesn't he.
And there comes a point in a marriage where the "not tonight honey, I'm too tired" line really does happen. Funny thing though, my wife learned that if it stormed outside after I went to bed "so tired," I'd be up for hours looking out the window at lightning in the distance.
A strange bunch we are, Jen. I should feel sorry for you, BUT, I know in reality you are actually blessed to be married to a weather guy.
