2009 Movie Rentals.....rate 'em!

Alicia - that's another movie we want to see. But I must be honest - I loved the original so much and ordered it thru Amazon, that I suspect the remake won't even begin to measure up. But it will be a fun 2 hour Beardsley/North ride, just the same. YM&O (original) is probably my favorite family movie. I read that they changed some things too. Guess you'd have to to make it relevant to 2006. If we see it, I'll post about it.

Pride & Prejudice was really good. It was a little odd watching this compacted 2 hour version though. Things moved so fast, but I still enjoyed it a lot and will watch it again.

I absolutely LOVE the A&E 1995 version with Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth. It's one of, if not the the best movie I've ever seen (and I've seen it multiple times).

I got Just Like Heaven with R. Witherspoon... Great chick flick!! Going to get Prime soon, that looks really funny, it has Uma Thurman and Meryl Streep in it... Looks good...

The Weather Man - very good movie.

Different though. Very little to do with weather. Reminded me of Nicholas Cage's movie, The Family Man. There's a clear message - don't let your family slip away. Remember to appreciate your loved ones or they will slip away from you. This is not a comedy although there are a few moments that are comical. He's always getting food thrown at him. "Hey Weather Man" and along comes a Frosty or something. His dad doesn't understand him, at all. His kids are slipping away. And he regrets divorcing his wife. Brief nudity (15 seconds), strong language, strong sexual references. I wouldn't watch it with a kid younger than 14.

I did my homework on this movie, I knew there was going to be a clear message - appreciate your loved ones. Don't take them for granted. So I'm glad we rented it.

But I have one question - are there any highly paid on camera weathermen/women that are NOT Meteorologists? On the big networks? I was expecting the character to be a Met.

Yes there are a few, however, they don't let it slip. Many of the METs have received their 'certificate' from Mississippi State in the field of Broadcast Wx. Correspondence classes in which at times, they get help (or cheat) their way through the classes. That really doesn't clarify a true meaning of a meteorologist.... someone that has been through hell and back (the Major of MET/ATM SCI is NOT the easiest major in the book... its one hell of a challenge!)

I saw the Weatherman also and was not impressed by Nicholas Cage. Yes, I do understand the theme of the movie... (don't let your family slip away from your hands), however, this movie IS NOT based on OCM's/Broadcast Wx. ONLY in the big DMA Markets are their Wx Producers that forecast for the chiefs (and that's if you are lucky). Being on camera you have to communicate with the people in certain ways that you can walk outside and feel protected (and not self-centered)... if you come over like Nicholas Cage did, I can see why food was thrown at him... CASH! (Cocky Arrogant $H!t head)..... You have to gain the viewers trust (ie Tom Skilling, Jim Cantore) and then you have to keep it... that's a sign of a TRUE MET.

Speaking of Jim Cantore... the movie should have been based around him and his family... Being through and successfully surviving a tough fatherhood is something that should be taken with a deep heart and open arms.

"Just Like Heaven" - very good. Cute story, typical at times but enjoyable. Reese Witherspoon is adorable in it. If you like San Francisco, you'll like the scenery.

Ironically we also rented "Walk the Line" and will watch that tomorrow. Reese Witherspoon stars in it as well. It's going to be a Reese weekend. Purely unintentional though.....LOL

"Yours, Mine & Ours" was all checked out.

Nathan - that's what I keep hearing. We're going to watch it either later this afternoon or this evening, as soon as we can fit it in.

What I've heard is if you didn't like Country music before watching, you either have a greater respect for that music genre or end up liking it. I'll be curious to which group I'm in, b/c I am not a country music fan (alt rock)! But from all I've heard, it's a great movie. Hard to get too, I had to stand by the just returned DVD's to claim it. Sometimes I don't even walk to the new release wall, I just walk right over to the drop box area.

I saw Monster-in-Law and it was funny. It's kinda silly at times, but it's definitely entertaining and that's why I watch movies....to be entertained. If a comedy makes me laugh a lot, then it's a success in my book. And I laughed a lot. Wanda Sykes is hilarious! Anyway, if you're one of those people who analyze and critique every tiny thing in a movie, you might find a few unrealistic things to complain about, but if you just want a fun comedy to enjoy and make you laugh, watch it.

I just watched The Exorcism of Emily Rose on payperview and I am still shaking. I don't like those type of movies but I watch them anyway. Why do I do that to myself?


It was a okay movie. Not something to watch around the children but the graphics are frightening for little ones. Don't watch it alone like I did if you are scared of things like this.

Walk the Line is two thumbs up. It is a great chronological of Johnny Cash and Joan Carter Cash. Phoenix and Witherspoon sing everything... there is no lipsinking.

I haven't seen it yet, but I want to and will before long. I heard that when Witherspoon agreed to the role, she didn't know she would be doing the singing herself. She wanted to do it though, and took singing lessons.

Walk the Line - 5 Stars, Excellent, Two thumps up - whatever the highest rating we're giving movies is!

I thought Reese W. did great in this movie. Wonderful acting and singing. I never would have suspected she had to take singing lessons for the role. Joaquin Phoenix was superb in this role of Johnny Cash as well. I remember him from years ago, in a minor role on Knots Landing. He's sure come a long way since then!

I'll admit it - before this movie I didn't know much about Johnny Cash or June Carter. It was nice to learn about their lives this way. A wonderfully, honest portrayal of both. I'll also admit I somewhat pre-judged June Carter, for thinking she broke up JC's first marriage. If what I saw are the facts as they happened, I'd say his first wife was the difficult one, not JC (although he went thru some hard times). We didn't like his first wife, at all.

I'm not sure what's wrong with me, maybe I'm just predisposed to be a cranky perpetual malcontent. but I didnt like Walk the Line at all.

I watched Yours, Mine, and Ours the night me Sheltie died. Cute. Very cute and Dennis Quaid in Coast Guard whites is enough to keep anyone with a pulse distracted for at least a little while.

Nathan - yes we did like Walk the Line. I didn't really know much about Cash or Carter before watchiing. I was happy to learn his marriage was already on the rocks when they got serious. That's a biggie with me - you don't come between spouses. The way his first wife was depicted, she didn't seem very happy at all. Or nice. Of course the movie seemed slanted towards him, not her (first wife). Cash and Carter seemed perfect for eachother though and clearly very happy after they married.

I was searching for this topic to post a few recent rentals 'reviews':

Yours, Mine & Ours - oh gosh, where to start? I swear I don't think I've seen such a sappy, unbelievable movie before this one. The original was so much better, the stories felt real.....because, they were real! This is a true story, in case anyone doesn't know. Names and specifics might have been changed but a man with 10 and a woman with 8, married and had another together. All true. In the remake they flipped the families and threw in a housekeeper that stayed (original they went thru a string of them). I like Dennis Quaid and I thought he did a great job. The kids were cute. But I found myself comparing this remake to Cheaper by the Dozen, with Steve Martin - not the original YM & O. The lighthouse was just too much, too.

Sorry if anyone liked it, but it was just one scene after another. My daughter Laura and I howled, b/c a few scenes were very funny but also b/c 90% of these storylines would never happen in real life. The original felt - real. Rent it! Please.....LOL

My kids rented Mind the Gap. I saw parts of it and it looks sad to me. Different too. If I get a chance to fully watch it, I'll post about it.

It's been out for quite a while, but I finally saw The Notebook recently. I thought it was really good. I saw Walk the Line the other night too and it was great.

Just Friends - bleh. I almost turned it off after about 10-15 minutes, but it did get a little better. I have no need to ever see it again, though. It was a cute idea...they just could have done the story a million times better.

I almost rented Just Friends until I could find a Yours, Mine & Ours DVD available. Not sure which one would be worse?!!!

YM & O is simply, the cheesiest family movie I've ever seen. And I've sat thru plenty on Disney channels - I've paid my dues with Laura, when she was little she was into so many movies like this and I put up with all of them. Now even SHE admits YM & O (remake) was so absurd, to be taken seriously. The scenery was even fake!

I think I'm off movies for a while. I need to start my yardwork anyway....it can't keep snowing forever!!!! It's gotta warm up eventually. LOL

Serenity - good movie, reminded me of A New Hope, the Star Wars IV movie. Now we want to watch the TV show but I'm sure that's impossible.

Mind the Gap - oldest daughter watched it. Said it was good but I didn't get to see it before it was due back at Blockbuster. It was an odd movie and sad, she said.
