Miss Mary wrote:Yes we iPod! All the time, playing music thru the car stereo, on car trips too. A song came on the radio yesterday as I was driving, it was a special 90s flashback lunch and I've heard it before but of course couldn't write it down. Hoping someone here knows this song.
- DJ said it was recorded in 1999, it came out around the time of high school graduations
- Artist's last name began with an L.
- It's a song but narrated by an older man, with music playing in the background.
- He is giving timely, sage advice to young graduates.
- Such as, be kind to your elders, b/c.....remain close to your siblings, b/c.....always wear sunscreen, b/c......live in NYC once in your life time but don't stay there, live in LA once in your lifetime, but don't stay there....on and on.
Since my daughters are into buying songs on iTunes, I think they'd like this song.
If anyone knows which one I'm talking about, I'd appreciate an artist and/or the song title's name. It's a really cool song!
Thanks. (Sometimes you guys are better than googling a vague question like this!)
Mary
I found it!!! After a lot of searching, and even a bad website that put adware on my computer--(lol)--it's called "Everybody's Free (To Wear Sunscreen)" by Baz Luhrman.
(ALSO, if you search it in Google, try to avoid anysonglyrics.com; a Norton window popped up notifying me of "Adware.180Solutions")

Anyone seen the iPod City stories about how they are made? Pretty awful and crazy.
more at these urls: here and here
By itself, Foxconn's Longhua facility is reported to house over 200,000 workers -- or a population larger than the British city of Newcastle. Its exterior gates flaunt billboards encouraging anyone over the age of 16 to apply for a job.
Inside Longhua, workers labor a 15-hour day building iPods, for which they usually earn about $50 per month. When they're not on the assembly lines, they live in secluded dormitories that each house 100 people and prohibit visitors from the outside world. The workers are allowed "a few possessions" and a "bucket to wash their clothes."
"We have to work too hard and I am always tired. It's like being in the army," Zang Lan, one of the workers at Longhua, told the Mail. "They make us stand still for hours. If we move we are punished by being made to stand still for longer. The boys are made to do pushups."
According to the report, the iPod nano is made in a five-story factory called "E3" that is secured by armed police officers. The super-slim digital music player is said to include over 400 parts which arrive from component manufacturers all over the world.
Another factory in Suzhou, Shanghai, manufacturers iPod shuffles and is completely surrounded by barbed wire. At this facility, 50,000 workers are housed outside the plant and earn about $99 per month. However, they must pay out of pocket for their accommodations and food, "which takes up half their salaries."

True, but that certainly doesn't make it right. I think a lot of times the corporations don't know it is going on. They are told "oh yes the working conditions are humane" and then they turn around and create sweatshops and iPod cities.

First of all, the Daily Mail is the source of the second link. Doesn't seem to be very credible. Of course, I am not from England so I am not sure exactly how credible this site is.
As far as the other site is concerned it doesn't look to be a very pro-Apple site.
I am not saying that these sites have no credibility but that you can link to almost anyone saying anything online. I want to see someone reputable making these claims.

Apple is investigating the factory but it has been all over the tech news sites for the past couple weeks. Many of the places in China have pretty awful working conditions where toys and stuff are made -- it isn't a real big surprise.

I love my ipod. I play it through my stereo and it is alot better to put it on shuffle while I drive knowing I like all of the songs than dangerously searching through cds and also getting them scratched because I usually only like a few songs on each disc.
I am with the rest of you parents though. My daughter breaks or looses everything. Got her a cheapy mp3 player until she is responsible enough for her stuff for me to justify the cost.

I've had a 20gig for last year or so and I think it worth the money. Easier way to carry songs with you than a CD player. I don't plan on getting a video Ipod anytime soon, unless they have more exclusive content for it. I'm not really interest in seeing tv shows on a little screen. I say get it if you like to listen to alot of music and into downloading.

I'd have to say over half, possibly 3/4th's the music on my family's 3 iPods are from CD's we've purchased it over the years. My kids would be thrilled if we could find the time to record our vinyl collection onto CD's....but that takes so much time. Which of course would go right onto their iPods (they enjoy current and old music, such as Bob Dylan and the Beatles). Scratches and all. If only we had the time.....but anything downloaded onto their iPods was purchased, legally. That is something we care personally about.
