I'm hearing on the local radio station here that it was a commuter plane. It looks like a freak accident though.

Yeah, it looks like it's cloudy with limited visibility, so I'm thinking weather-related.

Also, if it was terrorism, why not hit the U.N. or Empire State Building which are not that far away?

the visiblites are not that bad, they said the planes today are flying VFR (Visual Flight Rules)...however I agree, if indeed it was terrorist (which both FBI and NORAD deny) then why would it fly into that building instead of a more important building? (besides to try and scare people...)

As a precaution measure Norad is scrambling military planes over many U.S cities but again they say no terrorism related in the New York City accident.

"Flames could be seen shooting out of the windows of the 183-unit building on East 72nd Street and York Avenue that overlooks the East River. The Federal Aviation Administration said the aircraft was a small fixed-wing plane that was not in contact with air traffic control.

Two bodies were found on East 72nd Street. Luggage was also found on the street."

I have a feeling current policy dictates this response. Not waiting for further information or verification but immediately launching aircraft as a precaution. I personally don't have a problem with this precautionary measure, better to be safe than sorry.

Plane was apparently not in contact with Air Traffic Control(which is a requirement to fly over Manhattan). None of the NYC airports, large or small, report knowing about this plane.

The fire is definitely out, and you can see rescue workers through the window in the once-flame-filled apartments.

WNBC reports it was a 4-seater Cirus 20. That is not confirmed though.

They also report 4 are dead now, including at least 2 from the building.

WNBC is reporting that plane was registered to Yankee's pitcher Cory Lindle. They don't know if he was in the plane though.

AP and ESPN are reporting he was on the plane and was presumably killed.
