You went to school this summer right? So you did not have much of a summer to begin with.

School starts typically in the 3rd week of August for me and ends around the 1st of May. Elementary, Middle, and High School in this area all start at the same time, but end around June 1st. They piloted the year round program when I was in middle school and it was a big flop. Personally, I didn't mind it, but most people griped.

Georgia is now pondering year round school. But there are some states now that have year round school.

School here starts the day after Labor Day, always has, since the DAZE when I was in school.Thanksgiving break starts the day before Thanksgiving until the following tuesday, giving the kids off for the first day of buck season which is always the first monday after Thanksgiving. Our gang gets off a day before Christmas and goes back the day after the New Year.Usually, spring break starts the thursday before Easter and goes til Monday, however those days can be taken away due to snow days, leaving, like this year only the weekend of Easter off.School ends around the 12th of June, unless theyneed to make up days for snow events, if that happens then the might have to go until the 17th or something like that.

Blessings, Raine

I believe classes begin on the 27th of August, though I have to move in on the 22nd or 23rd. That's almost two weeks later than when my sister has to start, which is when I used to have to start back in High School.

I went to year round for most of my elementary school career and all of my middle school career. I actually liked it. Despite not having a summer to speak of, we had nice long breaks spread throughout the year (and that meant that we could go on vacations off-season :) ). The track that I was on had a vacation schedule such that I only had two full 9-week periods between breaks. The rest of the time it was either 6 or 3-week periods: 6 weeks of school then the first break, then 9 weeks, then the second break, then 3 weeks, then Christmas break, then 6 weeks, then the third break, then 9 weeks, then the fourth and final break (which was almost always longer than the others) and then 2-3 weeks till the end of school followed by a week-long summer break.

I guess the reason school has been starting earlier is because of the vacations added in. The school year is 180 days long, which is, I believe, the same as it has always been (please correct me if I'm wrong). So, if that's the case, the presence of standardized testing shouldn't be affecting the real length of the school year.

My daughter's school calendar is: Somehow amid all these holidays, they fit in 180 days of school. These don't even include 1/2 days which they have quite often.

August 14 - 1st day of class
Sept. 4 - Labor Day Holiday
Nov. 24-28 - Thanksgiving Holiday
Dec. 22 - Jan 5 - Christmas Holiday
Martin Luther King Day
Feb. 23 - Feb. 27 - Mardi Gras Holiday
Good Friday & the following week - Easter
Out of school the last week in May

They need to cut a few days off all these holidays. There's so much starting & stopping. August is such a hot month I'd like to see them start the Tuesday after Labor Day

I know elementary, junior high and high schools in Massachusetts require 180 days a year. If North Carolina and Louisiana have the same criteria, it sounds like it is "nationwide law."

heheh tru tru...but i was referring to public schools in my area. Normally if college starts say on the 13th then they will start on the 20th.

I know north carolina's tourism bureau was trying to change all nc schools to starting after Labor day because the beaches and mountains are losing valuable tourism money. I dunno how well they made their case, but i know it hasn't been turned down yet.
