Stores Know You Don't Like Christmas Marketing In October, But Don't Care

"Christmas Creep" article in the New York Times gathered a bunch of quotes from retailers explaining why they feel the need to start marketing Christmas two holidays in advance. The verdict? They seem to know it irritates you, but they don't really care.

Walmart won't start Holiday marketing until Halloween, but are "not embarrassed at having rollbacks available now for shoppers. We know many like to plan ahead and spread the cost of Christmas," according to their spokesperson.

Toys 'R Us who recently opened a "pop up holiday store" in Manhattan causing us to scream in frustration, said: "It's understated." "Everyone can use a little Christmas right now, after a summer of toy recalls," Ms. Waugh said. "It's time to remember what toys are all about."

L.L. Bean is running an ad with red and green but no explicit Christmas references. They call it, "a little toned down." When asked if L.L. Bean worries about irritating shoppers, their spokesperson confessed: "It's safe to say there is always anxiety," she said. The ad "serves the marketing purpose. It gets people thinking that the holiday is coming."

Does "Christmas Creep" bug you? Take a photo and submit it to our Flickr pool, like vidaarctique did. The best photos will be collected and featured on Consumerist. Be sure to tag your photos "Christmas Creep."

This year, I almost decided to decorate for Halloween by putting up the Christmas decorations. Maybe advertise it as the haunted Christmas house or something do with the movie "The Nightmare before Christmas." But, I can't live with Christmas decorations for two extra months, so those ideas got canned.

What Wal-Mart did they get that from? Both of the ones here have had stuff out for a while now. The one in Morehead since at least some time in September.

Ever heard of Bronner's in Frankenmuth, Michigan? It's a HUGE Christmas store open 361 days a year in a little podunk town near Saginaw and Flint (with all respect to the people there though when I say the word "podunk," it just has humor value). I wonder which days they're closed. My hypothesis is perhaps New Year's, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day.

Yeah, I've been there. I have relatives in Michigan. I always stop in when I'm visiting. One of the days they are closed is Christmas Day, I believe. I'm not sure about the rest, probably Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Labor Day.

OK, after doing a little research I only got one right. Bronner's is closed on New Year's. But it's also closed on Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

Wait, aren't they open 362 days next year? Maybe they're closed on February 29 when it comes around. ;) (I'm bad, I know I am hehehehe)

On Thanksgiving, the biggest expenditure is food, not decorations or gifts.

Now since I have credit cards, I just use them and buy giftcards for everyone. I by JCPenny's for people most of the time and for the kids in my family, I give them Walmart ones for the toys and that...

The CVS Pharmacy in my neighborhood just placed their Christmas decorations at the checkout center today.
