Steve - my prayers are going out to your sons, especially the one in Eastlake. :(

That was a nice offer made by U-Haul.

We've seen a lot of huge fires out west the past several years, but I don't remember one threatening so many people as this one is. This is awful!

I don't know where Wxman91 is located, but I just got this info, passing it on:

Chula Vista -- Voluntary evacuations are underway in several eastern
Chula Vista neighborhoods. Evacuation boundaries are east of Mt.
Miguel Road, north of Proctor Valley Road, east of Hunte Parkway and
north of Otay Lakes Road.

Those leaving their homes are advised to seek food and shelter at the
city's designated evacuation center at the Chula Vista Youth Center
on the campus of Chula Vista High School. Firefighters are
considering lighting a backfire east of Proctor Valley Road to halt
the progress of the Harris fire, which is moving in Chula Vista's
direction.

Shortly after 1 p.m., police teams moved through four communities to
warn residents of fire danger: Bella Lago, the Woods at EastLake,
some areas of San Miguel Ranch and some areas of Rolling Hills Ranch.

Donations to assist displaced homeowners at the evacuation center are
being accepted at the Chula Vista Community Youth Center. Items such
as air mattresses, blankets, non-perishable food and water are in
demand. For more information, call the Youth Center directly at (619)
691-5276. The KOA Campground, located on N. Second Ave. is offering
evacuees space for RVs and their large animals.

Chula Vista residents who want updates on the current fire situation
can call (619) 397-6399 to hear recorded messages.

My prayers to Wx_mann91 as well.

I'm looking on MapQuest to get an idea as to where the various towns that have been affected are located. The size is absolutely scary!

CAMP PENDLETON - Camp Pendleton officials are recommending that
military members and their families pack personal belongings and water
in anticipation of an evacuation, the public affairs office said.

Residents of De Luz Housing, Serra Mesa Housing, San Luis Rey Housing
and O'Neill Housing areas are now on notice for possible evacuation.
The Provost Marshall and military police will announce an evacuation
plan, routes and lodging by loud speaker.

Military members who have already packed and have places to stay,
either on or off base, are authorized to do so.

"Safety is paramount: I urge all residents to take prudent precautions
ahead of time," said Colonel James B. Seaton III, the Commanding
Officer. "Do not wait to begin to prepare."

The Camp Pendleton information hotline is (866) 430-2764

7 pm update (local time) from my son and his wife. The Harris fire has jumped to within two main intersections of their home, perhaps 3 miles. Smoke and ash was increasing, and police have closed off roads northeast of where they live. They went back briefly to the townhouse to close the windows and take photos of interior furnishings and grab some medications. Grace, his wife, is in her fourth month of pregnancy, so they have moved to another location out of the heaviest smoke and about 8 miles away. They are fine and safe at the moment...and relatively calm all things considered.

From atop the hill where they live, he said the entire mountain north, east, and southeast of him is ablaze. 22,000 acres and growing. He said there was virtually a continuous fire line along that horizon.

Thanks for your thoughts and prayers. The overnight hours are surely critical for San Diego County.

Winds overnight subsided in many areas. This morning into midday will be a key time period for containment and control. Afternoon temps are expected to be from the mid 80's to near 90 again with this morning's humidity only about 10%.

Noticed that the area near my son's home is anticipating stronger NE winds to redevelop, so we are keeping fingers crossed at the moment.

It is quite likely that some of the fingers of these fires will make their way all the way to the ocean today.

Another update later this morning.

There was a fire south of Temecula yesterday, which with the winds would have been headed away from her probably, but I don't remember exactly where in the Temecula area she lives.

I found this on a website just now. The network evening and morning shows will be basing out of California starting tonight:
Anchors Head West To Cover Fires

ABC's Charles Gibson and NBC's Brian Williams are on their way out west to report on the growing wildfires in Southern California. This morning, CBS News announced Katie Couric is also headed west. With winds not expected to die down until Wednesday, it could be a busy next couple of days for the evening news anchors. We're told Williams will base in San Diego as will NBC's Matt Lauer. Lester Holt remains in Los Angeles. Terry Moran, Chris Cuomo and Claire Shipman are also on the ground, reporting for ABC News broadcasts.

>More: A CBS News spokesperson tells TVNewser Couric was in New Hampshire reporting several campaign stories Monday. "After her shoots were done, we got her out to California last night."
