generator? Hopefully, this will be one weird day, and, tomorrow
will be back to some normalcy!

Nope, no generator...we lost power for a couple hours once this started, the generator gave me enough power to use my computer, but on my street power came back on pretty quick. Most of the rest of Watertown is still without power, but it should be on soon. We actually had it pretty good here, compared to places like Cleveland and NYC.

I heard on the two main news channels (MSNBC / Fox) that power should be back within the next few hours. :)

Indeed Dennis. I'm sure Terrorists have thought about acts that not only kill people, but acts that can cripple the big USA money Machine. Lets pray this isn't Terrorism, but at the same time, let's not exclude that possibility. We Americans are too smart for that.

Cleveland's still w/o water. At least 20 suburbs affected, including the downtown area. Those poor folks! I had put together an emergency stash of items - food, water, etc. in case of terrorism but never really kept it going. I've been taking the gallon jugs of water on vacation with us, since I can't drink tap when out of town. Now I'm thinking I'd better replace those jugs! This could happen to any one of us! Makes you stop and think......no power, no water. At least in Cleveland, since they draw water from Lake Erie.

But, since all police are on patrol, what could of happened? If they knock out power, they lull eyes to one story, and then come in from behind and bam. It could happen.

This does show just how vulnerable we are. The subway system going down like that.....thousands of people trapped underground...its a Terrorists dream come true. Remember, Terrorism isn't just about killing people, it's about instilling fear.

And just think if this had tripped more breakers. The site that went down is linked with places all the way to Oklahoma and Florida. :o

Yeah, this could have been really major (not that 50 million people is small change). It only affected about 6 or 7 states and Ontario. It could have been most of the country east of the Mississippi and beyond. That would have been really bad.

I read a quote from one of the spokesmen from my local power company. He was basically surprised that they (a relatively small company) only lost power for about 15-20 minutes, while every county around us was dark. Here in rural Greene County, NY, life went on during the Blackout of 2003.

I was glued to my tv when this happened and I am still not sure what the cause is. I watched MSNBC mostly because they seemed to have better resources than FNC and much better than CNN. I heard info. about 15 minutes earlier on MSNBC than on FNC and about 45 minutes earlier than I did on CNN.

I had been watching TWC right before I switched to watch MSNBC and heard the news. When I heard the Canadian PM blaming lightning I told myself that there was no way it could have been lightning -- there wasn't even any clouds in that vacinity. :o

I hope the situation in Cleveland and Detroit is getting better as well.

Thanksfully, I didn't get affected from this power outage to badly. We had one brownout at around 4:11 when it took place...and another one around 10:30 PM. The counties to my north and west up through Erie suffered worse, but according to the radio this morning, all the power is back on in these areas. I contacted my parents in CT last night and they had no clue what was going on. I mentioned it to them and they put on CNN. Shortly after that, I received a phone call from my brother who is living on Long Island to see if we knew anything about this black out. I told him what we knew. He sent me an email this morning telling me that they finally got power back on at 4AM this morning. He also mentioned that the temperature inside their apartment got up to around 93 to 96 degrees last night. I couldn't even imagine what that would have been like to try to sleep. I felt pretty bad from him because he has asthma so badly. I'm glad that he has his power back now. Hopefully, this won't happen again for a long time.

Well I got ahead of myself last nite ! I posted(via hubbys laptop) about being out of power and while I was posting the power came back on.Not for long ! About an hour later we lost it again. It came on again sometime after 2am. Just listened to the local radio station and they are advising to use as little electric as possible. The system, although up for now,is overloaded already ! We are to expect several outages throughout the day, possibly longer. To top it all off we are actually listed as one of the counties for an ozone action day. It's already 83* here at 11am. Gonna be a fun one ..... ~K

Interesting article.....Ohio's initially to blame for the blackout, which created a domino effect? Hadn't heard that until now. On a side note, I find it interesting that in NYC, guests at the Marriott had to sleep on the sidewalks, b/c electronic keys to rooms couldn't be used. We take so many things like that for granted, don't we? All dependent upon electricity.

Just thought I'd pass along a comprehensive magazine article I found online, about the Blackout.
