Jack has decided they have to back to the island. . . and Ben is working on getting them back to island. That's the only reason they are working together. . .

Today's News: Our Take
It's Our Favorite Sawyer Nicknames, Sweet Cheeks
Jan 27, 2009 10:00 PM ET by Adam Bryant
Lost is back, and with it an exciting new season of Sawyer nicknames. The former con man kicked things off right, dropping a few gems in the first two hours of the season: "Dr. Wizard" for Faraday, "Ginger" for Charlotte, "Frogurt" for Neil and even "The Ghost of Christmas Future" for himself. As we eagerly await Ol' Scruffy's next instant classic, here's a look our favorites to date.
11. "Freckles"
For: Kate
Explanation: This one gets a nod simply because of the sheer volume of its usage. Plus, this pet name is endearing, which we can't say for most of the others.
Honorable Mentions: "Sassafrass," "Shortcake"
10. "Genghis"
For: Miles Straume
Explanation: Sawyer doesn't shy away from the easy references, and ethnicity is usually his first line of attack. Case in point: this reference to Mongolian ruler Genghis Khan. Sawyer's also referred to Miles as "Bruce Lee from the Freighter" and "Donger," a play off of Sixteen Candles' Long Duk Dong.
9. "Kenny Rogers"
For: Frank Lapidus, the Freighter Folk's chopper pilot
Explanation: A simple look-alike gag, but it had us rolling.
Honorable Mention: Shaggy
8. "Jackass"
For: Jack
Explanation: Get it? His name is Jack, and Sawyer's calling him an ass. The clever devil.
Honorable Mentions: "Cool Hand", "Dr. Do-Right," "Dr. Giggles," "Amarillo Slim"
7. "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon"
For: Jin and Sun Kwon
Explanation: While again ethnically based, this nickname is also indicative of Sawyer's extensive knowledge of high and low culture. He frequently references Star Wars and classic literature. In this case, we think he was just hoping for subtitles to Jin and Sun's conversation.
Honorable Mentions: "Papa-San" (Jin); "Tokyo Rose" (Sun)
6. "Rambina"
For: Ana Lucia
Explanation: Tough as nails, she was one of the few women on the island to match Sawyer's surliness. Her fearless, cavalier approach earned her the name.
Honorable Mentions: "Hot Lips," "Ana LuLu," "Cupcake"
5. "Skeletor"
For: Roger Linus's skeleton
Explanation: Okay, totally obvious. But Sawyer was drunk. On who-knows-how-old Dharma Initiative beer. Still, funny.
4. "Mr. Clean"
For: Locke
Explanation: We're big fans of this one, and wouldn't you know it, executive producer Damon Lindelof says it's his overall favorite. "It felt particularly witty, considering Sawyer had used up most of his 'bald' jokes at that point," Lindelof said. "He proved ever-resourceful."
Honorable Mentions: "Cue Ball," "Brutus," "Colonel Kurtz"
3. "Captain Bunny Killer"
For: Ben
Explanation: One of Sawyer's most literal nicknames: Only days earlier, Ben had "killed" a rabbit to scare Sawyer into submission.
Honorable Mentions: "Yoda," "Gizmo," "Bug-eyed Bastard"
2. "Stay Puft"
For: Hurley
Explanation: Hugo has been on the receiving end of Sawyer's quick wit more than any other survivor, and once revoked Sawyer's nicknaming privileges by beating him at ping pong. Unfortunately for Hurley, Sawyer falls back on physical appearances even more often than ethnicity.
Honorable Mentions: "Three Men and a Baby" (with Charlie and Aaron, counting Hurley twice), "Deep Dish," "Jabba," "Snuffy," "Jumbotron," "International House of Pancakes"
1. "Captain Falafel"
For: Sayid
Explanation: Just as Hurley is the main recipient of fat jokes, Sayid gets the most racist comments. The once-and-future assassin did torture Sawyer only a few days after they met, but still, not cool. Of course, Sayid seems to take a sticks-and-stones attitude to the whole thing.
Honorable Mentions: "Red Beret," "Al Jazeera," "Captain A-rab"
Bonus: "Plato"
For: ???
Explanation: Executive producer Carlton Cuse let us in on this Season 5 nickname. "He calls somebody 'Plato' this year, and that one I like a lot. Sawyer's exasperation with his circumstances is a fun part of the story." Let the theorizing begin below!
Double Bonus: "New Otherton" and "Caught in a Net"
Explanation: Who says Sawyer's knack for names only applies to people? He also came up with these monikers for the Others' barracks and sex, respectively. Well played, Hoss.
What are your favorite Sawyer nicknames? See a freighter load of other classics in this video and tell us what you like!

I guess given the fact his career's in the toilet now and his personal life is a mess (no future with Kate and Aaron, as of right now), he has no choice but to trust Ben. Hoping things get better. Who knew that things were better right before he contacted the freighter people!
or maybe because Jack has wised up and realised that he cannot lead worth anything and that Ben has had the GROUP AS A WHOLE'S best interests at heart. He has been willing to make the correct, but unpopular decisions and is not in it for himself, as evidenced by him moving the island, knowing it meant he was gone. jack, on the other hand, has been trying to make everyone happy... and led them to disaster when he contacted the freighter
Derek, if you have time, listen to this (LostCast #70) and tell me what you think . . . especially theory about Jack, Kate, Sayid and Sun changing/staying the same. . .
ETA: In light of tonight's episode, what is your take on their theory of Ms. Hawking = Daniel Faraday's mother. .
hmmm, going back in time . . .

This Ep was developed with a lot of allusions to physics, H bomb etc.
The search for Faraday at Oxford turned up a maze amongst the furniture of a locked room being fumigated.
If you were going to explore the Hawking family tree perhaps going back in time to a 2007 episode of the cartoon series "the Simpsons" would help?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stop_or_My_Dog_Will_Shoot
The Oxford born physicist Steven Hawking made a cameo appearance in that EP and Homer gets lost in a maze of corn.
As always with lost episodes YMMV

Re: TV: Lost - Season 5!!!!
Another theory about Jack, this time from Doc Jensen at EW
Daniel Faraday = Jack Shepherd. Both doctors. Both called upon to be castaway leaders/heroes. Both wear backpacks and grow bad beards. I wonder how much we should make of that? I really liked Adam’s theory that Daniel is a new variable in the Island's past, effectively altering the destinies of the people that will live there or be born there. If the Island was always destined to go skipping through time, but the Oceanic 6 were never supposed to leave, then I wonder: was Jack originally supposed to be doing all the things that Faraday is currently doing on Lost? That could be the reason why the Island brought Faraday here: to serve as Jack’s understudy in the grand drama of its history. But now that Jack has pulled a Jeremy Piven-in-Speed The Plow and flaked out on the production, the role has fallen permanently to Faraday—and he’s playing the part differently enough to render significant consequences.

Okay this is getting too complicated and deep for me. No wait, I'll give your theories another try.....
Cause there can only be ONE Jack!
But I do like Daniel Faraday.......he's just not JACK!
But there are similarities, I'll give you that. Some striking differences though, Jack usually is calm, makes sense, Faraday is spacey, often making no sense but both try to do the right thing.
Interesting comparisons....

"Island" had a role for Jack. . . Jack, for whatever reason (his hang-ups probably), won't or can't take that role. . . so the "island" brought in (or maybe he was supposed or fated) Daniel Faraday to fulfill the role. . I still think Faraday's mother is Ms. Hawkings. . .. and some variable was changed (the "present" and "future" was changed; the losties' travels in backwards in time are affecting "present") and if Jack and et al can't get back to the island, then Faraday is back-up plan. . .

lurker - I enjoy reading your theories on what's going on. I agree with who will end up being Faraday's mom too.
One cool aspect of Lost is when this show started, fans naively thought the characters we met would be the only characters, for the show's entire run.
I'm always intrigued with the clever ways they keep introducing more and more, likable characters along the say......Frank, Faraday. Then a few you just can't quite like - Charlotte. Ana Lucia was another. But you knew Faraday would be a keeper, as I like to say......as was Desmond. Gotta love Des......one character I've grown to like now is Juliet. I just didn't trust her, at all in the beginning. Now I do. I highly doubt if I'll ever trust Ben's motives though. What an excellent actor Michael Emerson is! He can convey so much with just one look.

Re: TV: Lost - Season 5!!!!
These characters all have different strengths and weaknesses, classic Briggs and Myers. For males lost on an island for example, you would expect an intuitive thinking type to value a backpack with extra supplies and perhaps fore go grooming concerns. Jack is a classic judging extrovert profile IMHO. That usually makes for a decisive leader but can result in bad decisions when faced with too much unknown information.
The best approach for the group would be to compare individual recognitions of each new situation they encounter after a flash and take suggestions for solution.
I'm still thinking that this was Faraday's episode to shine. Clues, famous physicist from Oxford who has knowledge of time dilation? Running rat brains backward through time in a maze? Anything here that would help them get off the island?

Something tells me you are right, we may also see some clarification of Ms hawkings role with the oceanic 6 in a near term episode. In this Jughead episode Faraday offered to defuse a bomb that the US army had purportedly left on the island.
When Ellie took Faraday to where she had seen the bomb, Faraday did not recognize it until Ellie pointed to it? Faraday was apparantly investigating her bomb rather than whatever he had envisioned back at the army tents. Kind of odd the way he waved his hand around under the nose of her bomb as if expecting light to be shining out of it or something?
Its hard for me to express exactly how I feel this lost series will unfold.
Probably easiest to explain it from a Hurley perspective. I Feel like I've just been invited to a screening of the summer of '42. I know its going to be sad so I'm bringing a box of Kleenex. Made a stop at the concession stand for a big tub of popcorn. You know it's comfort food so of course I order it with triple butter. The theater is packed, but I find a comfy seat near the screen so I won't miss any of the action. The movie gets rolling along, then all of a sudden FLASH I look down, the popcorn's gone and i'm sitting there alone listening to Steely Dan in a BLOODY HUT!!!

The fact that both characters are so intricately related to time (Hawking and Faraday) should be enough to link them, regardless of Eloise the mouse and other clues.
Also, the last scene in "The Constant" (ridiculously fantastic episode by the way) suggests to me that Faraday's experiments may not have been kind to him - given that we're seeing a lot more of him recently I'm sure that we will see more about that soon.

Nosebleeds in relation to time travel
Nosebleeds connected to time travel
Nosebleeds also seem to be a side effect of time travel the precludes death. George Minkowski and Desmond Hume's consciousness traveled through time. Because Minkowski was unable to find a constant between the two time periods he began to bleed from the nose and later dies. Desmond also began to bleed from the nose as well, but survived by making Penny his constant, with the help of Sayid and Daniel Faraday. ("The Constant")
At some point during the construction of The Orchid one of the workers began to bleed from the nose and fell to the ground, unconscious. Dr. Pierre Chang is aware that the Frozen wheel is behind the wall and claims that it is connected to time travel. Faraday, at his present age, witnesses this. ("Because You Left")
As the island began to shift in time, Charlotte began to experience nose bleeds. She states that she hadn't had them since she was a child, presumably on the island. She also claims to have headaches and difficulty remembering things, such as her mother's maiden name. Daniel shows concern over this, and Charlotte questions him about it, but he doesn't give any answers. ("Because You Left"), ("The Lie")
After the next time jump, Charlotte claimed to be feeling better. However, shortly after making that statement, she began bleeding profusely out of her nose, and collapsed onto the floor, unconscious. Daniel huddled over her and grabbed her in obvious distress and fear moments later. ("Jughead")

The problem is, Charlotte has not bled at all recently and was better this entire episode - even if that is not the case, how can one find a constant in artificial time travel? In other words, this seems to be a wholly different flavor of nosebleed.

Richard tied up the hands of Miles Charlotte and Daniel when they were captured. Miles and Charlotte both had nose bleeds. They were also the only two that still had their hands tied after the flash. A little strange that the army tent and Richards people disappeared but the bindings remained?
This latest episode was helpful. Faraday felt maybe going back to find the orchid would resolve the nose bleed problem. Pretty straight forward till they found the canoe with the water bottle from the Air India flight. After they got the Canoe in the water I stepped out into the hall to buy a Coffee from the vending machine and when I got back there was a commercial playing for godaddy.com.
Maybe next week.

BURNING TIME TRAVEL QUESTION NUMBER 1: How come the castaways got to keep the outrigger when they did the time warp shuffle? Shouldn't that have been left behind in the previous time zone?
Answer: The question was actually asked and answered two episodes ago in ''The Lie.'' If you recall, Juliet theorized that time travelers get to keep the stuff they're holding or sitting in when they jump. (Also see: the compass that Time Indeterminate Richard Alpert gave John Locke to give to his 1954 self.) In other words: How about we just roll with this?
Squarethecircle wrote:The problem is, Charlotte has not bled at all recently and was better this entire episode - even if that is not the case, how can one find a constant in artificial time travel? In other words, this seems to be a wholly different flavor of nosebleed.
And don't forget Juliet is getting the time travel 'sickness' too.. . the only people not 'sick' is Faraday, Locke and Sawyer . . . Faraday has a constant (Desmond), does Locke (?) and Sawyer (Kate, maybe)?
And maybe Charlotte (Faraday)?
Constant
From Lostpedia
"Constant" redirects here. For the episode, see: "The Constant".
Daniel Faraday explains that when a consciousness travels back and forth through time, it needs a constant to latch on to. A constant is an object or person that exists in both periods of time, that the traveller deeply cares about and could recognize. If a constant is not found, the oscillations between different times will become more frequent and chaotic until the individual dies from what appears to be a severe brain aneurysm. Faraday's lab rat, Eloise, experienced this fate when it was unable to recognize the difference between the present and the future. Minkowski seems to have experienced the same fate and appears to have died aboard the freighter, and it is implied that the same thing happened to Brandon. ("The Constant")
Individual constants
The page from Daniel Faraday's journal: Desmond chooses Penny as his constant; he is able to reach her in both times.
Faraday chooses Desmond as his constant (Desmond as Faraday's Constant). In his first appearance in real time on the Island, Faraday oftens seems confused and is hesitant in speech. by the end of "There's No Place Like Home, Parts 2 & 3", he is much more in command of his actions and become proactive
