I feel that it
is in our best interest, if it helps us communicate and gain an understanding of what's offensive and what makes people uncomfortable. I was being told that anything "gay" made
some people uncomfortable. And yet, I
rarely start any kind of gay-related thread (I can name
one). How can I be to blame for bringing up the "uncomfortable" subject then?
I don't have a rainbow bumper sticker on my car and I don't go march in some parade on St. Paddy's day. I'm not active in the whole "movement" for gay rights. I'm Republican and I have more important issues that I'm concerned about as a Republican. To be quite honest, I get
sick of hearing gay news. Sodomy law overturned in Texas...Gay bishop consecrated in Massachusetts...and on and on and on. If they really want to be accepted and show that they live "normal" lives by going to work, paying taxes, and what not, then they should just do it, blend into the world, and quit making such a big deal out of normal, everyday things. "Oooh, look at me! I went to the store and bought a gallon of milk!" Yay for you...big deal!
However,
being one of them, if there is a debate or generalization made, I'm going to express my opinion
as one of them. Not because I want to make anyone uncomfortable, but because I'm extremely opinionated. One of my coworkers once called me a Republican Julia Sugarbake ("Designing Women") because of my opinionated rants. Whether it's abortion, homosexuality, gun control, the war in Iraq, spiritual abuse and cults, crime, legalization of watermelon seed-spitting, or Coke v. Pepsi, I'm probably going to have an opinion and I enjoy engaging in spirited, civil debates on those issues. (BTW, Pepsi!)
If one of the reasons this board was created was to allow civil, respectable debates without fear of being flamed, then at least two sides of an argument should be allowed in order for the subject to be debated. And if that subject makes people uncomfortable, then NEITHER side should be brought up.
The whole issue allegedly started with my comment to Jacki. No one complained when I posted who I thought the gallery babes were (or if they did, I didn't hear about it). No one has complained during all the debates I've been involved in over the past several months (or once again, if they did, I didn't hear about it).
I am simply trying to gain an understanding of what we all feel comfortable with and what we don't feel comfortable with.
