This sounds like it would be a lot of fun! Obviously, Galveston would be easy for me....a hop, skip, and a jump away but I'd be willing to do a little traveling as well. Galveston is really far away for some of our members but we do need to find a place where we can get the most people. Boy it's hot in the summer here....not sure some of those Yankees can handle it.

Of course I wouldn't mind making it in a place where it snows either. :)

Hey a recomendation from Puerto Rico as I say that ST Louis would be a great place in the center of the country that the members can go to that city from south, east, west and from the north and the northeast and converge there :) .

It going to be difficult to find a place that's easy for 1484 members or for even 148 members (because I know the whole S2K family won't be coming :) ). But we certainly don't want to alienate part of the group because we pick somewhere that is too far away for them.

We did this with a Yahoo trivia group and it wasn't easy. Choices were made and voted on, but not everyone was happy in the end. Over the years, there have been at least one or two get-togethers in different parts of the country but with small groups. Of course, there are more members here than in the triv group.

I hope arrangements can be made for a couple of different locations and groups so that everyone can meet at least part of their Storm2K family in person. And make sure you have plenty of cameras!

Of course, I'm all for Galveston being one of the spots. If it is, I might even have a chance to attend a central or northern US get-together also because I'd save money on a Gulf Coasters party.

(From here on out, I'm going to use the abbreviation GTG for get-together. It's what we used for trivvers and so much quicker to type. :) )

St. Louis would work for me. And yes, I would actually drive (we won't fly). The wife and I have never been to St. Louis, but would like to visit - do some siteseeing and maybe see a baseball game.

I'd sell Houston/Galveston but it DOES seem out of the way for our northern friends. St. Louis works for me. Heck, anywhere works for me. If we were to plan it for earlier, I'd have to beg for Kansas or Oklahoma-OBVIOUSLY!!!!!

We could also travel to Lawrence... Garrett is dying to see it! ;)

Well folks, I'd "LOVE" to attend, we can pretty much travel to ANY part of the lower 48, only ONE, little TINY problem, the mid/late/summer, early autumn is our busiest time of the year AND we're planning a trip to Montana this early autumn anyways. "IF" I had to make a choice, I'd say some where smack dab in the middle of Texas would be easy and fair for most of us!

How's about Denver in the middle of August? I'll be out there then! It maybe hot, but now humidity!

Marty doesn't quite understand this board yet...

Well now...this is a real teaser!

Two more things to keep in mind. Folks might be willing to travel, but would like to be sure there are things to do nearby to keep them busy for a long weekend when the picnic is over!

Secondly, expect something like 3-5% to actually sign on and make the commitment. 10% would be very very high.

Now, as for me, how about Chicago on August 20-21st...the weekend of the Air and Water Show on Lake Michigan including the Air Force Thunderbirds. Cubbies are back in town the whole next week too!

A little self-serving? Maybe...but fun nevertheless.

I feel honored! After reading Ticka's and the following two posts, I knew the idea for this topic came up because of my thread (link above);
and indeed it was when I clicked it. :)

I am sure I wouldn't be able to (parental wise) and I am not exactly comfortable flying alone, with that said the best location for me
for instance would be one of the recreation centers at the retirement community I live in. The closest one is just minutes from here, the
others are in a three to five mile radius and I can get to any of them by golf cart.

I am located 1½ hours northwest of Orlando, which is also about 20 to 25 miles south of Ocala, FL.

I will be in Massachusetts the first week of June (maybe the last week of May, too) visiting family... so that wouldn't be a good time for me.

Ask me and i say Nashville? Why because MOST of our members are about the same distance from there. That majority are either from FL, TX, Gulfcoast, and or the midwest and the OV.

Its the Fair way to do it! Equall drive times for the majority. :)

Either way i think this is a great idea and as well i would suggest doing it in the summer as well when most are able to travel. No School, Vacations etc.

Hmm, interesting idea :) I'd love to go, but I'd have to hurry up and start saving like now if I were to make it out somewhere. :( I have virtually no money as of this time. Remember I'm coming from near Los Angeles, California as well; and I don't drive, so wherever I go (if I even do go) I'd have to fly and someone would have to pick me up at the final destination. I reallllly could use a vacation though :D .

May I also add that the 1900 Storm Museum, movie, memorials, and tons of stuff at the library are available here?

Thats very true Duckie...the memorial to the storm victims on the seawall...it's all very humbling, isn't it? I made that into a lesson for my kids when we visited there once, I had a work sheet made up and they had to find the answers while there, and look for the statue and take a picture of it, etc. Plus Galveston offers the stuff in the pyramids, and the best thing of all, everyone who wants can take a quick cruise while there on one of the many cruise ships :). (You know I'm gonna throw that one in...lol)

This would make an awesome S2K field trip someday. http://www.norman.noaa.gov/nsww2004/index.html
A 3-day severe weather workshop in Norman, OK. Yeah, that's my idea of a good time! 8-) Lots of interesting guest speakers this year, and Cantore is speaking at the banquet Fri night.

Back to reality ... let's see, so far I think we have:

1) Galveston
2) St. Louis or Branson
3) Nashville
4) New Orleans
5) Cincinnati

Also, there's Shannon's suggestion of having a northern get together and a southern one. The same weekend perhaps? So we can call each other to boast who's having a better time!! :D

Here is a thought... why not make it an annual thing and just make it a traveling picnic?

IMHO... Memphis, Nashville, Cincinnati, or Galveston all sound good, but while I would prefer Nashville... the traffic is NUTS there. :D

LOL, wow, plans actually being made! I am there for commitment, I'd absolutely LOVE a get-together!

My thoughts:

St. Louis- Hey, that's only a 4 and 1/2 hour drive for me, I've been there once before, very beautiful place and with a Six Flags, and a ballpark, there is definitely not a shortage of attractions!

Chicago- Poppysky mentioned he would be there a certain time, and that is even closer and easier for me, not to mention that I have a LOVE AFFAIR with that city!! I honestly cannot imagine anyone getting bored there, been there 10 times at least, would go another 100 if given the chance!!

Gal/Hou Area- Yep, there's a whole lotta you all down there! That's a pretty long drive for me, but it is somewhere that I have not been, and given I had enough time to prepare my car for that kind of trip and money to spend a weekend I'd say there's about aa 75% chance I could make it

Cincinnatti- Been through there, but never spent time in the actual city, pretty place, about 6 hours away is definitely manageable, and if you all on here have not been to King's Island theme park it's a blast! I could make it to Cincy!

Nashville- Never been there, and don't know anything about the place, so I dont know how I feel about it.

New Orleans- Once again, never been there, but I will be down that way soon enough, so maybe we could pick another place?

LOL, and now that my novel is through let me know when the voting begins or whatever happens to get the ball rolling! :D
