My first computer was a GateWay. I will NEVER own another one. IMO they ripped me off because I was clueless at the time. Dell was around back then. I wish I had swayed towards the Dell.

You can easily get a basic low-end system with a 17" CRT monitor for under $799; I see them at the local Circuit City and Best Buy all the time. Now it won't be anything fancy and it probably will be a dinosaur within 2 years, but it's still a functioning system. I do agree that to get anything decent with the usual bells and whistles (nice monitor, good speakers, quality printer), the price will almost always wind up over a grand, but when you think about how useful a computer is and how much time you spend on it, it really doesn't seem that absurd to spend $1000-$2000 IMO.

The basic price of mine was about/under $700.
Tom don't feel bad. My Dell cost almost 2,500

Mine ended up costing me about 905. I went to Office Depot and bought the 3D Graphics card way cheaper than what Dell offered. I also paid about 40 bucks less for the 5.1 surround sound speakers to go with my Sound Blaster Live card.
With the 150 rebate the computer ended up costing me $755. To me trhat is a deal because I paid 1800 for that piece of junk Gateway which they shipped to me already out of date. Then wanted to charge me to upgrade.
