The only thing I have to say is that old Sam Walton is rolling over in his grave. He started a great American store (Who sold nothing but what was made in America if he could help it). When he passed away, his kids took it and started buying cheaper foreign articles to sell and make a quick buck, and now you would be hard pressed to find anything made in America in that god forsaken store. I like the term said earlier...Hell-Mart.

Unfortunately, there is a super Wal-mart going up as we speak here in town. The only bright spot is that right now, we only have one major grocery store and they overcharge also, so maybe they will have to lower their prices a bit. I will still shop at the current store though.

Ain't that the truth blizzard, ain't that the truth. Sams kids are nuthin but a bunch of spoiled, rotten, snot nosed kids that could care less about the employees and the customers! Yes...I agree, their prices are great on food, we shop there, we HAVE to, we're FORCED into shopping there, which just really FROSTS my cookies! But what are you gonna do, they come into *Small Town America*, keep their prices at or below cost until the strangle hold that they have on the smaller stores chokes them to death, THEN when they have successfully run everyone out of town, they bend us over a barrell!

Sam Walton started out as a mom and pop shop too. He just happened to have the entrepreneurial spirit to expand. I can't fault WalMart for being successful (like Chad said). Restaraunts have the capability of doing the same thing... a Country Kitchen opens it CAN shut the local cafe down, but is it Country Kitchen's fault?

This world is about competition. We live in a capitalistic society and the strong survive. It is sad to see things close.

Woo hoo... Nike's!!!! Levi's!!! They also recently started selling Bugle Boy! ;)

I agree with chad...although I don't personally like WalMart...I have absolutely nothing against them doing better than the next guy, even if it means putting Ma & Pop out of business.

I am fortunate enough to have plenty of places to shop in my area. If I don't like WalMart..I can go elsewhere. If WalMart was the only store in town...I guess I would be grateful that they were here.

Competition is good...it breeds success, and forces prices to be competitive to survive. With so many choices out there, you have to do your best to survive, and there is NOTHING wrong with that!

They also employ umpteen thousand people, my mother included, and donate much $$ to charities like the Children's Miracle Network.
As much as I hate to see any business go under, Wal-mart has made food, clothing, etc. more affordable to people on fixed incomes.

I think is the evolution of the American society. Mom and Pops survived because at that time - life had alot less choices and life was simpler. But now as we know life - its more complex and definitely a need more choices to stimulate our needs.

One day - there will be company that will come along that will be bigger and better than walmart - that's just the American way.

Krispy Kreme...open 24 hours...is right in the middle of all those evil stores!

Krispy Kreme...born in NC...just went "global" a few years ago and it has really boomed throughout the US. I remember the days when people used to skip my 7th period class...in my senior year of High School...to get us a couple dozen of the original glazed or an assorted dozen for the whole class :)

No chad, I'm ALL for competition BUT.....when you have the buying power like Wal Mart, there's NO WAY in Hades that ANYONE can compete with them, isn't that called a *monopoly*??

Chad, I agree; it's competition. :)

I agree with Donna as well... Wal-Mart's prices are great for those on a fixed income, like my parents and myself. We still pay quite a bit, but it would be so much more elsewhere.

Chad, chad, chad tsk, tsk "LOL!"

I looked up the word monopoly in Mr. Websters, here's the definition of WalMart to a *T*; Monopoly: excluxive possession or control of a commodity or service. Monopolize: Dominate or prevent others from sharing in.

Now.....doesn't this sound JUST like Wally World? It dang sure does to me. True, in larger cities where the demographics are varied, WalMart may not monopolize the market BUT......in small towns like Pinetop, ShowLow, they DO have a strangle hold on the ppl!

Obviously there are those who can compete... Fred's, Dollar General, Target, K-Mart ... the list goes on.

Your right Garrett, there IS competition out there and yes, there are those who do survive a Super Wal Mart BUT......like I said, in small town Americana, WalMart LOVES to move into small towns, run ads for the first 2 months at cost or BELOW cost, run mom and pop outta town, then jack the prices up, I've seen this with my own 2 eyes. Myself and quite a few others travel to Flagstaff, Gallup New Mexico, Tucson where ever, to do our BIG shopping, we have too, WalMart has run everything else outta town (well, not EVERYTHING) and NOW....Home Depot is coming to Show Low, RIGHT NEXT to WalMart, FINALLY, some competition for Wally World!
