At the end of 2005 there were 4 smokers in the house, and for the most part, I was supporting all of them: Me, my wife, my mother in law, and our 14-year-old son.

If there is EVER a reason to quit, it is for your kids. My M.I.L and my wife both started when they were 14 or less. Needless to say, my step daughter (now 22) started when she was 14, and now our son. I would rail against him but how could I have any moral authority while I was still smoking. If it's bad, it's bad. It really is weak to argue that "I can because I'm legal age."

Finallly I gathered myself up and quit on new years eve. I'm still smoke free 5-6 months later. In March, my MIL died. The was almost 80, so you could say that despite smoking for almost 70 years, she still had a good long life. But I'll tell you what, the last 15 years of her life were full of illness and disability. She finally died of heart failure/emphesema/blood pressure/asthma - all aggravated by smoking.

Then in early April, my wife had a near heart attack. At 42 years old, she had developed high blood pressure, bad blood lipids, artery disease, etc. They did an angioplasty and put a stent in her artery. Fortunately there was no permanent damage, but it was a big scare, and she is implementing life style changes. Today I bought her ( ) her "last" pack, along with two boxes of "patches." I am encouraging her to stick with it.

Now finally, our 14 year old son has quit - involuntarily. He is taking a summer "vacation" at a boot camp. (It's a long story - belongs in another thread)

So hopefully we are going to be a non-smoking family here pretty shortly.

The only downside: My weight is going up and up. I've gained nearly 30 pounds since quitting. I guess that's still healthier than smoking. Recent blood pressure: 125/65, so it's not too bad.

That's a VERY good BP for a former smoker... I only hope I can get mine back down to "normal" when I quit again... but this stupid storm hasn't made things any easier.

Thanks Audrey.

PS: In keeping with the real purpose of the thread: For a while there, I was making my own smokes. I got a machine, tubes and loose tobacco in cans. You can make them for about $1 a pack. The quality does suffer, though. It's hard to pack them as well as the factory, so they tend to burn faster. Also, the cheaper tobacco's don't taste as good either.

Good for you Coriolis.............. what non smokers do not realize is that this is a drug habit. The same way as if we were taking heroin. You never know how much of a junkie you are till you are trying to quit. And yes, all smokers are junkies, just like me..... but I am going to quit again. I did not start smoking again two weeks ago because I had to have a cigarette. I started because of severe depression and a xanax habit. I made the choice to kick the xanax and smoke again till Johns health gets back and we do not have the pressure of finishing this house. Things will be fine. They always work out.

Nicotine can be as addictive as heroin. Check whyquit.com or nicotine-addiction.org if you want to verify that statement. I don't know that cutting back on smoking is a successful tactic. Seems like all you would be doing is torturing yourself as your body never gets the chance to purge the nicotine from your system, so you will never get over the cravings between cigarettes...and you still have to deal with the psychological side of the addiction.

Coriolis, sounds like you had as good a reason to quit as anybody I've ever heard from on the subject. Good luck staying tobacco free and with the rest of the family.

Janice, I'm sorry for your bad situation. Hopefully things will improve, and you can kick the habit for good some day.

Sorry for the off-topic post. My wife smokes Marlboro Light 100's. They are about $25 a carton here as well.

Wow Corolis, good luck in your fight for a smoke free house. I agree it is best for the kids, I think that all the time. My mom is still smoking, but my dad has quite for about 10 years now. He did it cold turkey. My mom is in her 50's and have noticed her coughing alot latley. Its hard to gripe at her with a cigerette in my hand. I am in fear of gaining weight and one of the big reasons I have not took the plunge yet. As far as the roll your own thing, when my hubby smoked in our early 20's we bought the machine and empty papers with filters attached and rolled our own for a while buying good tobacco, and mixing in a bit of pipe tobacco like vanilla or some other flavor with it. They were tasty. But he has long quit and now its just me smoking in my house. Maybe this thread is a good thing, maybe one or two of us will stop because of it. :D

Yes, OTown, I was 120 pounds, size 8 last August. I have gained 25 pounds since quitting. That is one reason I am so depressed too. I drink 8 glasses of water a day and that does not help. I am really trying to lose weight by eating mostly veggies.

Life is a battle.....

Cartons are about $54. We have a $2.40 tax per PACK here in NJ.

gtalum & Regit - I'm sure that there's alot of people that don't smoke that waste their money on things that others wouldn't consider a "necessity". MYOB.

Stepanie you close enough to the PA border? Wawa is so much cheaper

I'm about 15 minutes south of Philadelphia. It just might be worth the tolls.

Then there's always good old Delaware...

I was talking about people who are exceptionally poor and would otherwise have money if they didn't smoke. And as for any other people who are in the same state and waste money on other things, that's just as foolish. Don't take everything so personally.

No, don't you make such generalized comments. Be alittle more specific next time.

Delaware is cheaper but I live in the Far NE way out of my way, I guess the closest bridge to you is the Walt Whitman, too bad, when I go to work I take the "free" way in and the "free" way out-I-95, or right by Trenton, there's a bridge there too, all I know is when I take 29 home instead of taking rt 1 I take the next exit for 33. It's a little longer but what I save in tolls gives me gas money :D

How can you complain about the price of gas when you willingly pay $3.00 and up per pack of cigarettes for the opportunity to kill yourself?

Regit
Anytime I hear anybody complain about their dire finances, I ask if they smoke. If they say yes, I don't feel the least bit sorry for them. Of course, if you have the money to smoke and don't care about killing yourself, I say go nuts.

My, my, my. Kicking the anthill a tad, aren't we? Killing myself? There are a million and one ways to do that, smoking is but one. If I wanted to get as nasty as you appeared in your posts, I'd have you rattle off your list for everyone else's amusement.

Cookiely
I find that many feel they have the right to make comments of a personal nature when I purchase cigarettes. My parents taught me to be polite and I usually don't reply which makes them extemely nervous.

Your parents raised you well. I wish everyone else's did.

Regit

No, it was a poor choice of words in a forum merely comparing prices of cigarettes. You included people other than the poor in your original post. I agree with Stephanie.

Why do most threads in these forums have people who act like they know better then - and are superior to - others? After they send the first rude volley over the net, they come back with "No, that's not what I meant, it's your bad for taking it personally" and expect the "debate" to drop. There is a handful of these people who are well-recognized for behaving in this manner on S2K.

Because of this phenomenon, we can no longer post regarding politics and religion is just about at that point. Next will be any other social issue. Why even have a social forum such as Off Topic if it keeps getting ruined for those of us who don't intentionally step on toes?

Conosto, sorry for the hijack, but your thread was the last straw in my long-term observation and growing frustration of this behavior (the range is substantial between the hurricane threads and this off topic forum). Opinions and debate I can deal with and learn from, but not the putting down of others. I've wanted to say this for quite some time, and have been picking at the offenders in little bits (I will no longer engage them at all after submitting this post; an "ignore" feature would be supreme). No one will hear another public word regarding this behavior from me.

/rant

Getting back on track, I purchase Marlboro 100s by the carton. With manufacturer coupons, my cartons range between $20 and $25.

I knew that cigarettes were more expensive in Canada because my neighbor in Tampa used to bring a few cartons with her from the duty-free shop on long visits to her sister's in Manitoba. I just never realized how much more expensive they were. If you can grow your own tomatoes, can you grow your own tobacco too?

Yes, I agree. I feel it is better to delete some posts rather than lock the post. Some of us are interested in venting and sharing in these posts.

Roger that! .. Back on topic... I promised myself to quit AGAIN, after the pressures of a horrible school year came to a close this summer. Hopefully there will be no more Katrinas to push me back. Meanwhile, I can completely empathize with those who feel the need to "light up" especially if they got started before they were fully apprised of its consequences--chiefly addiction to an unhealthy habit. I try to read how the "benefits" of quitting take affect literally within minutes of the last one you lit. That gives me some hope--and I hope it does for others as well.

I don't know what's worse, paying the $3.15 for a pack of smokes or paying $10 for xanax and $10 for Ativan...I lose either way

Wow, that's how much I smoked when I smoked regularly. For me, I couldn't have really smoked more though. I loved it then, but I coughed all the time and it seemed like I smoked a lot! Anyway, I quit several years ago and feel so much better, not to mention smell better. ;) I never realized how much smokers stink! lol
The only way to do it IMO is cold turkey. It was hard at first, but it worked. Buy lots of gum!

Good luck quitting. :)
