Just a quick note before I get dressed up for a business dinner tonight: I have a job interview next Friday! I went back to my position in Ft. Lauderdale (35 mi. away) a few weeks ago after taking last quarter off, but I answered an ad for an instructor position in a pilot Teacher Certification program at the (huge) community college ~10 miles from my home. They're looking for an instructor with a Master's Degree in Education and experience at the highschool/college level to teach "Instructional Strategies." The program involves teaching adults who already have bachelor degrees in other fields and are working as aides in the Palm Beach County school system with the intent of becoming certified teachers here. This job would be a new challenge for me (if I'm offered the position), since I've taught college-level English, composition, literature, humanities, and critical thinking courses for the past 16 years rather than ed courses. I'm excited and looking forward to the interview!
OK, time to get ready for an evening of small talk, "pressing the flesh," and generally being "Mrs. City Manager"!

Hey everyone. I thought I would drop in and enjoy the warmth of the PBS with the stiff northwesterly wind blowing this evening. This is the first Friday evening I have not been at a debate tournament during school since I don't know when. I better enjoy it, too. I will be gone the next 7 weekends in a row. I don't get any breaks!!!
Seriously though... I wouldn't trade it for the world.
I had my first parental issue this week. I can't (and don't want) to get into details, but I am managing through it. I knew it was bound to happen and I have a great mentor working through the issue with me. The support system at the high school is great!
I read the last few pages here trying to catch up. So much to read!!! Eric, happy belated birthday.
Sorry, I missed it earlier!
Well, have a good weekend everyone!!!

Diane - I hope you get the job! Sounds like it would be a change of pace but in a good way. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you....
Garrett - some parents just choose not to support teachers. Right away, it's a battle...my Johnny did what? Oh no he didn't......I've met parents like this and stay far away! Because A. you can get lumped in with these complainers and B. our kids knew early on, we were a united front with the school. Unless of course a teacher crossed a line, but thankfully none did. Our daughters have had wonderful teachers about 90% of the time. The other 10%, not terrible but you wondered why they chose education in the first place? Must have been the misconception you get off at 3 everyday? That you don't have to grade papers or make lesson plans in the evenings? You also get your entire summer off! Not true, huh? I know plenty of teachers and they work their arses off. 12 hour days, workshops in the summers. Sure they get about 8 to 9 weeks off in the summer, a few less than the students but IMHO, they deserve it.
Okay now, climbing down from my soapbox.....a long, long time ago, in another world far, far away (pre-kids, pre-second marriage), I wanted to be an El Ed Teacher! After one baby, then two, I decided I just didn't have the energy for all that. Switched my major.....
Karan - my youngest has 2.5 years at home yet and I'm not at all sure she'll do what her sister did - go to school several hours away. I can see Laura staying home. But would support her if she didn't choose a local college. She has ADD and just learns differently. Occasionally blurts out she won't even go to college, it's all just too hard. We encourage her to go, of course. So when her college visits time comes, we will be checking them in out in a different way than we did with Nina. With learning labs and extra help on site, as my main concern. So in some ways, if she goes away, I will worry so much more about Laura! Lord Almighty, I'll have to lay in some Valiums huh? Just kidding.....maybe a case of tissues at least.
Going to check out that cave man topic - wowee, someone needs to alert Chad and/or Marshall. I'm surprised it's still around (as a certain unnamed member too!).

Make room please!
Well, as Garrett does also... I have some catching up to do here at the PBS. Pass some hot apple cider please
Yes, I am home... yes, I slept in my own bed and yes, I took a shower in my own bathroom... that felt wonderful. I'm sorry, when you spend 4 months walking to the outside bathroom (with shower shoes) you take your bathroom to heart!
My job over there was moreso a personnel processing job.
I hardly had anything to do that kept my occupied yet along NOT doing the job I have spent my whole military life at so far... Let me lay this out..... I need to stay active... sitting on my butt is not a way to spend the day. For those of you that don't know my military job... think of an Airport.... baggage, people, mail, material handling, control tower, etc..... that is almost a good description of what I should have been doing. The military has cargo airlift planes that transport people and cargo around the world... we either 1) load plane the planes, 2) load the planes with cargo 3) put passengers on the planes and 4) repeat to each cargo plane! Needless to say, I'm usually extremely busy.
Its been relatively warm here in Wisconsin (from what I understand).... I have yet to bring out my winter coat! I ironically wish there was snow on the ground.... that would be really nice to see since I've been staring at sand for the last 4 months.
I'm heading back down to Charleston for a week-long visiting period on Monday. I had to leave Charleston before many of my colleagues returned home.... my vacation gives me a chance to see them on American soil in normal (non work-out) clothes!
Garrett--- after teaching swimming lessons at my local YMCA, I made a choice that teaching was NOT for me. I have very little patience for those that do not listen. Yes I do work with those that have learning disabilities but I have acquired new and different ways to teach these special students... a majority of the time, they listen and learn better than the normal kids!
I suppose I'll get off my soap box now.

Oh Shannon, it's great to have you home. How long was that hot shower again?? For a woman who has been as busy as you have been in the years that I have known you, you must have been going stir crazy. ((HUGS)) Welcome home and thank you.
Mary, I think you should by stock in Kleenex stock. I know Laura will do fine whatever she decides. She has that nurturing upbringing. You're a good Mom Miss Mary!!!
Ok, I have my gold an black on and have a million things to do before the game. I'll brew a pot of Earl Grey and leave some KK's on the table. (The chocolate ones are for David). Our KK store is selling gold and black KK's so I picked a few of them up for you Steeler fans. Mary, I colored a special orange and black one for you.
Have a great day

Well, normally I'm not a Steeler fan, but I'm gonna root for them. I'm also rooting for the Seattle Seahawks because of the local connection (Shawn Alexander is a Boone County High School graduate [1995], just like me [I graduated there in '04]). If it comes down to Seahawks/anyone, sorry, but I gotta root for the hometown boy!

Good morning everyone! Inservice day at the old school. Can't you feel the excitement???
Karan, I was very impressed by your Steelers yesterday, but I am sticking by my initial instinct and going with the Seahawks winning the Super Bowl. I will be happy with either team winning though, so I would not be upset if Mr. R pulled it off for Pitt.
It's a Monday and time for me to get motivated. We shall see if that actually happens!
Have a great day,
Garrett

Good morning folks, and welcome home Shannon! I know you're enjoying all the old and familair things. :O)
I'm still on vacation in FL. I decided to stay 2 more weeks, booked a cruise out of Ft. Lauderdale leaving this Sun. Jan 29. going to Key West, Grand Cayman, Jamaica, and Cozumel. Really looking forward to it. :O) A 3 generation cruise...pretty neat. It was hard sending Brian and the kids home yesterday, but they had a safe flight, and made it home from LA with no problems.
I had a wonderful birthday...celebrated long and hard....lol It was great to be back with my old crowd, too much fun!
Hubby got me the Coach Gallery purse I'd been wanting for my bday...he's the absolute BEST! Any of you who love Coach will know this bag and know how cute it is!!! I love it!
How is snowman, and whats the condition of his father, does anyone know?
Take care all...and God Bless!

Please keep my mother Joyce in your prayers...she's been having almost constant pain behind one of her eyes since Saturday or Sunday of this past weekend. I've mentioned about her calling for a CAT-scan appointment...she doesn't do well at all with MRI's...she has claustrophobia...and the narrowness of those test machines...anyway, hopefully SOON she will make an appointment for a CAT at the Wake Med satellite building just up the road from our community neighborhood.
Thank you all so very much,
Eric

Yes Annette is alive and well. I have gotten emails from her this week.
While I am here, an update on my MIL. She is "hanging in there". She isn't really improving even aftter her blood transfusion the other day. Basically, at 88 years old, she is just "worn out". We don't know how far she will recover from the operation if she even does. Just keep her and us in your prayers.
I too hope everyone is having a GREAT WEEK!!!
