Dan we don't need your traffic if you can't discuss an issue or topic with some civility. I could care less if you disagree with peoples opinions but I do care on how you disagree. :-)

Civility? How is the endless charade of anti-liberal crap spewn forth on this board any different? I'm just providing a counter-point to all of it, and I'm being a little spirited, that's for sure...But it's nothing compared to all of the rampant conservatism on this board.

No, actually, I think we were discussing Catholicism and debating varying Biblical versions of the Ten Commandments. Not all our threads are debates, but this one was and we didn't all agree.

Do you read these threads completely or just take the first couple of sentences, decide what side a person is on based on what you read, and then post a flame against it?

We choose to disagree on this board in a civil tongue. If you can do that you are welcome if you can't you know where the door is. We do not tolerate personal attacks and flaming. There are plenty of people on this board who don't agree with eash other but we do it in an adult and reasonable way...

I welcome your liberal opinion but I would like at least a source or some fact-based information to back it up. I can call anyone a "redneck" without any fact, but that does not make it true. I can call you a bigoted liberal but I know nothing about you and have no fact to prove it so is it true.

Give me some facts to back up your spewing and then you may get a little respetc, otherwise you will have to just sit back and enjoy our Conservative views.

Facts please, Dan? Any? Any sources?

Sorry, let me reiterate...The confederates lost. They were separists and traitors, and thankfully the Union kicked butt.

"They were separatists and traitors"? If you lived in 1776, danwxman, you would have described US ALL in King George III's terms.

I wonder if you'd have had the stomach to sign the Declaration of Independence, in the full knowledge that it meant your death if ever captured.

I WOULD HAVE.

Linda, you got that right. Mr. Lincoln, the despot that he was, also suspended the constitution at will. He disbanded the Maryland state legislature, put them in prison, instated Martial Law, suspended the writ of habeus corpus and basically held the entire state of Maryland prisoner to keep her from joining her sisters.

There is a book called "When in the course of human events" I forgot who wrote it, but it is a good read. Deals with the facts, not the kind they teach you in revisionist history in high school.

That "despot" is one of the finest Presidents we have ever had. Remeber that he did what he thought was required to save the Union. In late 1864 to early 1865, he began the process of lifting those restrictions. It is no different then what FDR did during WWII. Fortunately, both Presidents began to lift these restrictions when the emergency passed.

Revisionist history for the South is anything that makes them look less then the fine, honorable citizen that they insisted they were. Revision in the South sees Lee as Patton and not the man whose pride, slaughtered the Army of the Northern Virginia. I am a southernor with just as much pride, but history is history and we except that in the 1800s, southernor lived a different life, but it was a life that included slavery and included a radical band who nearly destroyed this Union.

stormchazer, did you see the show on the Discovery channel yesterday (I think that was the channel). It was about slavery in Brazil. Seems they had more slaves than the US and if I'm not mistaken, the slaves were still having some problems in the early 1900's.

(Not that this post has anything to do with what is being debated, just thought I'd throw it in).

I would hardly classify Lincoln as a despot. He led the country through on of the toughest times we have ever faced as a country. The superior manufacturing capability in the North spell doom for the South from the early days of the war. With an effective blockade in place in was only a matter of time before the south was going to fall. That being said, I have no problem with the display of the Confederate flag. It's part of our countries history that shouldn't be forgotten. Through this trial by fire a stronger Union emerged.....

I think it still goes on in some African nations today. I find the Civil War era to be the most interesting in our history. The problem with the reparation question is that in the time of slavery, that was all the South knew. We cannot penalize today for something that was common practice then. We fought a war against ourselves where thousands of Americans died. I think that in itself pays the reparations tab.
