Dick Clark's American Bandstand on Saturdays

Datsun 280Z

8 track players

Cigarettes at 75 cents a pack (used to be able to buy them as a teenager)

I remember hearing the news that RFK was shot.I was 7 years old.I didn't grasp the significance at the time

I remember the milkman, air-raid practices while in elementary school, record ALBUMS and 78's and 45's, 8 track tapes, FM converters for car radios (they only had AM stations), Flower power (my father had the big flower decals on his Metropolitan), Korvette's, General Stores, Buffalo shoes (huge platform shoes), disco, 1976 bicentennial, Camaros, Firebirds and Trans-Am's being "the in cars", cigarettes at .50 a pack, smoking in supermarkets and hospitals (I must admit now - YUCK!) and leaded gasoline.

I'm sure I could think of a few more.

I remember buying gas for under 20 cents a gallon and my Father paying under 12 cents. Everything that has been said here I remember since I will be 67 in September which makes my an official Geezer.

At first I didn't know what you were talking about Karan - I remember pop beaded necklaces! They were fun to make.

I remember gas being as low as 35 cent a gallon. Driving your friends around, putting 2 bucks worth of gas. Everyone pitched in, a buck or two or a few quarters. Spare change went a long way back then.

I remember gas stations offering self or full service. My dad preferred pumping his own gas b/c if they pumped, they always wanted to check your oil. And then he claimed you weren't really low, they just wanted to sell more oil. I remember him going on and on about it. And meanwhile, you're just sitting in this car, quite capable of pumping, washing the windshield, etc. Going all service was a good idea, IMHO!

I remember old fashioned shoe stores. You could barely get inside the door and a salesman was in your face - can I help you, what are looking for, what size are you? You could never just browse around, they were right behind you. I hated that! Then if they couldn't find the shoe you wanted in your size, they'd bring other styles, in your size. Of course you felt pressured to at least try them on, but really wanting the other shoe style. Shoe stores going self service was a good idea, IMHO too!

Making pot holders for our mothers and other mom's in the neighborhood. Charging 25 cents for them. I made so many, even preorders to match someone's kitchen colors.

Babysitting for 50 cents an hour.

Changing cloth diapers, with rubber pants and the large pins with ducks on them.

Janice - when I married the first time in 1975 I made almost every meal from scratch. I remembered my home ec teacher saying to stock your pantry with the 10 basic baking items - flour, sugar, salt, baking powder, baking soda.....etc, etc. I'd stand there at the Kroger baking aisle and see a biscuit mix or cake mix. Thinking, now wait a minute, I can make all of these from scratch. So I did.

I try to make a lot of what I cook from scratch still.

Even homemade apple pies!

But I never heard of anyone babysitting for 25 cents an hour.....LOL

I used to babysit for nothing...well I used to go over to where my g/f was babysitting and "help" her. They paid her $5, I had a "date", and it cost me nothing!
