It was a very precise hit as the window was open until 10:30 PM EST and they hit it at that time.The operation costed $60 millon.

The United States plans to spend up to $60 million to try to destroy the satellite

Well, look at this way, either way it would have cost money. If you just let crash: You would have cleanup costs, lawsuits for letting crash instead of shooting it down, possible death and destruction (see lawsuits), etc. . . So in the end, the US Navy gets some target practice and the satellite is obilerated into safer, smaller pieces for re-entry into the atmosphere.
