Calif. Man Caught in 'HOV' Lane With Dummy
SAN RAFAEL, Calif. (AP) - Say what you want about police officers, but they are no dummies. The California Highway Patrol gave Kevin Morgan, 28, of Petaluma, a $351 citation for driving in a high occupancy vehicle or "HOV" lane with a kickboxing dummy propped in the passenger seat.
The dummy was wearing a Miami Dolphins windbreaker and a baseball cap but Officer Will Thompson noticed that the "passenger" had no legs.
"When I looked inside his window, I thought, 'Oh, that's cute,'" Thompson said. "I didn't even ask him where he got it. I think he was pretty embarrassed because all the people driving by were laughing."
Thompson often parks next to a car pool lane and stands on his car door rail to look down into passing vehicles. His point of view allowed him to see the legless dummy.
"I think about the only thing he said was, 'Well, that didn't help me very much today, did it?'" Thompson said. "I said, 'No, it didn't.'
Thompson then placed the dummy on a freeway shoulder to deter other commuters from similar schemes.

Passengers in stolen car restrain would-be carjacker
SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Court TV) - When his friends left him stranded with no way to get home, Noe Ochoa decided to steal a Hummer limo.
Given the melee that followed, Ochoa probably wished that he had caught a cab instead.
The 21-year-old San Antonio man allegedly attempted to carjack a stretch limo some time after 2:30 a.m. on Oct. 23 and got a beating from the vehicle's 15 occupants.
According to a local media report, the limo's driver was in the rear of the car talking to the passengers, who had rented the limo to celebrate a friend's birthday. When the car suddenly began to move, one passenger looked through the privacy window and saw Ochoa driving.
The passenger crawled through the window and struggled with Ochoa until the car came to a stop. The man then put the would-be carjacker in a choke hold, the report said. Other passengers then dragged Ochoa out of the car.
According to a police document, an officer patrolling the area intervened when he observed the fight between Ochoa and the passengers. The disheveled suspect reportedly told the officer that his friends had abandoned him and he had taken the car because he needed a ride home. He said he did not realize that there were people inside.
Ochoa was taken to a hospital for treatment of cuts he received during the fight. He was then taken to jail and charged with vehicular theft. He is in the Bexar County Jail on $15,000 bond

Police: Robber was run down five times, then shot self
MILWAUKEE, Wis. - Things were looking good for one Milwaukee robbery suspect. He had just successfully held up his victim, who had given him some cash — but his escape plan hit a snag.
Instead of whisking the man away from the crime scene, his getaway car mowed him down.
According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the 29-year-old man, who has not been identified, allegedly threatened another man at gunpoint in a parking lot at about 2:45 a.m. on Oct. 23 and demanded money. As the victim complied, a truck that police believe was the suspect's getaway vehicle drove up in reverse and accidentally hit the man and his victim.
Things were about to get worse.
The driver panicked and fled in the car, leaving the suspect to limp away with the cash. Then a woman, who police say was a friend of the victim's and witnessed the holdup, drove up in her car and rammed into the suspect.
The woman allegedly backed up and hit the man two more times, the report said. When the woman reversed her car and prepared for a fourth go at the robber, the man reached into his pocket to grab his gun and in the process accidentally shot himself in the leg. The woman then bumped the injured man a fourth time.
Milwaukee police arrested the alleged robber and took the man and his victim to the hospital. According to the report, the victim was listed in satisfactory condition, while the alleged robber was said to be in critical condition.
Police are looking for the woman driver.

Thief Robs Banks While Chatting on Phone
WASHINGTON D.C. (AP) - These days it seems that some people just can't go anywhere or do anything without a cell phone in their ear. In northern Virginia the police say they're looking for a woman who's been holding up banks while chatting on her phone.
"This is the first time that I can recall where we've had a crime committed while the person was using a cell phone," Loudoun County sheriff's spokesman Kraig Troxell told The Washington Post in a story published Friday. "The question would be whether anyone is on the other end of the line or not."
Investigators believe the woman has hit four Wachovia bank branches in recent weeks in Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William counties.
In three of those bank jobs, she was talking on a cell phone, while showing the teller a box with a holdup note attached to it. In the most recent holdup, on Nov. 4, in Ashburn, the robber showed the teller a gun.
The woman is described as well-spoken, with a slight Hispanic accent.
Investigators say they're not sure if she's actually talking to someone on the phone or just pretending. They also won't speculate on why she's chosen only Wachovia branches.

Man pleads guilty to disrobing for mall snapshots
ABERDEEN, S.D. (Court TV) - To the female employee of a camera shop in South Dakota, Richard Graff's request was not out of the ordinary — he wanted vanity pictures.
But when the woman went for her camera, the 54-year-old man went for his clothes.
Graff pleaded guilty last week to a misdemeanor charge of indecent exposure, according to the newspaper The Aberdeen News.
Earlier this year, Graff allegedly visited the camera shop located inside a mall in Aberdeen and placed an order to have his pictures taken. While the employee prepared her equipment, Graff took off his clothes. The woman proceeded to take Graff's pictures because she feared retaliation, the report said.
Graff, who reportedly has a history of similar incidents, received 180 days in jail, but the sentence was suspended. He was fined $5000 and placed on probation for a year. He was also ordered to undergo a sexual evaluation and to stay away from the camera shop.

Police nab "Toe Sucker" burglar
GREENWOOD, Fla. (Court TV) - William Russell's odd modus operandi — he takes his sleeping victims' money and then goes for their feet — has earned him a unique moniker with police in Greenwood, Fla.
Russell is known as the "Toe Sucker," and he recently lived up to his nickname.
According to a report on television station WRTV, the suspect broke into a couple's apartment on the night of Nov. 6 and stole some money. He then went into the couple's bedroom, where they were sleeping, and began to fondle the male victim's toes.
The sleeping man reportedly woke up thinking he was being caressed by his partner. When he discovered Russell in the room, he chased the burglar, who then fled in a truck, according to the report. Greenwood police later used the truck description to track down Russell and arrest him.
Police later said Russell was known to have a foot fetish. He allegedly once broke into a woman's home and woke her up by sucking on her toes.
Russell was charged with residential entry and burglary. He is in Johnson County Jail on $100,000 bond.

Alleged Burglar Tries to Hide in Oven
FERGUS FALLS, Minn. (AP) - A former employee who attempted to burglarize Speedway Restaurant apparently didn't know any good hiding places.
Police responded to a burglary alarm at the Fergus Falls restaurant early Monday and surrounded the building.
When officers entered, they discovered that the burglar had tried to hide in the ceiling. He fell through and tried hiding in an oven instead.
"The guy was only half-baked when he was picked up," joked Police Capt. Hugo McPhee.
The 43-year-old man was taken to the Otter Tail County Jail.

Student Allegedly Urinates in Ice Machine
CARLISLE, Ky. (AP) - A Nicholas County High School student was suspended after he was accused of urinating in an ice machine that at least 31 people got ice from before the incident was reported.
Ben Buckler, chief of police for Nicholas County Schools, said another student dared the boy, who told officials he relieved himself in the ice machine in the gymnasium lobby just before physical education class Wednesday.
School law officials say charges will be filed, although officials were still trying to decide Thursday what to charge him with.
He was suspended for 10 days, pending an expulsion hearing.
Other students witnessed the incident, but it wasn't reported to Principal Doug Bechanan until Thursday morning. By the time the machine was taken out of service, some students and staff had taken ice from the machine.
School officials contacted the Department of Public Health in Frankfort.
"They said it was gross and morally wrong but not a health risk," Buckler said.
Health officials said urine is sterile because the body has its own filtering system. If any bacteria did make it through, the ice's temperature would have killed it.
But some students, parents and staff remained worried.
The Nicholas County School Board is picking up doctor bills "to ease the minds" of those who were exposed and want to be checked out anyway.

Elderly Ga. Man on Oxygen Foils Robbers
SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - Despite being 83 years old and reliant on oxygen tubes for a lung ailment, Harry Carpenter wouldn't let his wife of 57 years be robbed by knife-wielding intruders in his own home.
Two would-be robbers forced their way into the home of Carpenter and his wife, Jackie, Wednesday evening while the two were having dinner, according to a police report.
One of them made Harry Carpenter sit down in the sun room, while the other went with Jackie Carpenter, 80, to get money from her bedroom.
Carpenter tried to come to his wife's rescue but was threatened with the knife.
Then he got his break — his wife pretended to faint and the intruder who was holding him went into the other room to see what was happening.
Carpenter shuffled to the laundry room, where he kept an old, unloaded rifle that he used to shoot squirrels, he said.
When one of the intruders came back, he found Carpenter aiming the rifle at him and yelled at his companion to flee. Police were unable to locate the two suspects, who didn't get any money.

Man takes fire trucks for joyrides
STANLEY, N.M. (Court TV) - According to authorities in Stanley, N.M., the sight of one of the town's fire trucks navigating the streets on Nov. 8 was not particularly unusual. What was out of place was the man behind the wheel.
Carlos Bruneni is accused of breaking into two fire stations and taking two fire trucks on separate joyrides.
Sgt. Bill Lopez of the Sante Fe County Sheriff's Office said Bruneni gained access to the main fire station through a slightly opened window. The town's fire department is composed of volunteers who are not required to be in the building around the clock, so the station was empty and the 25-year-old man's entry went undetected.
Bruneni allegedly went through fire equipment in the garage and materials in the office, and even prepared a meal of waffles and syrup. He then donned firefighting gear and drove around town in a fire truck.
A fire department volunteer spotted Bruneni driving the truck around 5:30 p.m. and questioned him. Bruneni told the man that he was with the fire department. Sgt. Lopez said the man, who knew all members of the 13-person volunteer squad, decided to avoid a confrontation and let Bruneni go, but immediately contacted authorities.
Deputies were initially unable to track the suspect who by then had driven to a second firehouse — also empty — where he abandoned the fire engine for a smaller vehicle called a brush truck. According to Lopez, Bruneni drove the second truck for about 30 miles before abandoning it on the highway and traveling on foot.
Deputies captured the fake firefighter at about 8:30 p.m. and charged him with two counts each of unlawful taking of a motor vehicle and commercial burglary. He was also charged with criminal damage to property.

Guilt-ridden bank robber returns cash
AMBRIDGE, Penn. (Court TV) - Clearly, Andre Ellis had moral misgivings about his bank heist from the very start.
When the 39-year-old man allegedly held up a bank in Ambridge, Penn., on Nov. 8, his note to the teller read: "Put the money on the counter. Sorry I did this. God forgive me. I need help. Thank you."
But twenty minutes after he left the bank with $1100 cash, the apologetic robber returned to make financial amends, according to police.
"He was polite and contrite," Ambridge Police Chief David Sabol said.
According to the chief, after the heist, the suspect walked to a coin-operated laundry a block away and watched as police cars raced past the location to the crime scene. Ellis reportedly experienced a change of heart — he realized that he had done a terrible thing and decided to give back the money.
The suspect walked back to the bank, but was unable to reenter the establishment, because banking industry protocol dictates that banks be locked down after a robbery. Ellis then banged on the windows and caught the attention of the very teller he had robbed. The woman alerted officers, who arrested Ellis without incident.
Ellis was charged with robbery. He is in the Beaver County Jail on $100,000 bond.

Drunken man on golf cart rams squad car
PORTLAND, Org. (Court TV) - Ted Cersovski was not only feeling above the law — he was also feeling invincible.
The 28-year-old man was allegedly intoxicated and operating a stolen golf cart at about 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 12 when an Oregon State University safety officer attempted to apprehend him. Cersovski refused to stop and then drove into the side of the patrol car.
According to Oregon State Police Lieutenant Phil Zerzan, campus police received reports of a golf cart traveling recklessly around the campus lawns. When a safety officer caught up to the cart, he found Cersovski driving with passengers — two other men and a keg of beer.
Cersovski allegedly ignored the officer's orders to pull over and continued driving. After the fourth order, the officer drove ahead of the slow-moving cart and parked across the road about 20 feet away. The roadblock, however, failed to deter Cersovski, who drove the golf cart into the side of the vehicle.
Oregon State police were called to the scene and attempted to conduct a sobriety test, which Cersovski refused. He was uncooperative during his arrest and later refused to take a breath test in jail, Zerzan said. Because they were passengers, the other men in the cart were cited for unauthorized use of a vehicle. The men told police that Cersovski had pulled up besides them and offered them a ride.
Officers suspect that Cersovski, who is not affiliated with the institution, stole the golf cart from the campus stadium, where he had watched a football game earlier that evening. The golf cart belonged to the university's golf team.
Oregon State Police have charged Cersovski with driving under the influence of intoxicants, unlawful use of a motor vehicle and two counts of reckless endangerment. Charges for transporting the keg of beer are pending, according to police.

Man Charged With Allowing Child to Drive
ALDEN, Kan. (AP) - An elderly man accused of allowing a 7-year-old girl to drive his pickup has been charged in a two-count complaint.
Alan Sleeper, 88, was charged Nov. 16 with endangering a child and allowing an unauthorized minor to operate a motor vehicle.
Police say Sleeper was in the passenger seat when a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper pulled the girl over in late August driving the man's truck in a rural area at 74 mph in a 55 mph zone.
Sleeper reportedly told the trooper he "didn't want her to drive that fast."

Deputy Tracks Suspect With Snow Footprints
AUSTIN, Minn. (AP) - A sheriff's deputy didn't have to use fancy forensics to track a burglary suspect near Austin. He just matched up footprints in the snow.
Mower County authorities answered a burglar alarm Friday night at the ABC Bingo parlor in Mapleview — just outside Austin — where a television had been stolen.
Sheriff Terese Amazi said a deputy found a 25-year-old Austin man walking along a county road about a mile away. The treads of his sneakers matched the footprints in the snow and, she said, he had the television with him.
Amazi said the man was arrested and was in jail on Monday. She said he will probably face felony burglary charges and misdemeanor theft charges because the television was valued at about $100.

OMG. My dad used to laet us drive, but it was not on a public road, and it was never that fast. 35mph at the most. I have 7 year olds and I can't imagine them on the open road doing 70, they could kill themselves or someone else so easy. This man is is being plain ignorant.

Houston police foil 'Spiderman' stunt
HOUSTON, Texas (KHOU CBS 11) — A man who calls himself "Spiderman" was tackled by Houston police officers after trying to scale a downtown office building Tuesday morning.
The suspect is a Frenchman named Alain Robert, who has reportedly scaled skyscrapers around the world—often with his bare hands.
"I haven't commited any crime. No tresspass. No reckless," Robert said as he was handcuffed at One Houston Center. "If you can charge me with something, I really want to hear it."
He was wearing logos for an online casino that has sponsored several of his climbs. It's the same gambling site that sponsored the infamous streaker who bolted past security at Reliant Stadium in Houston at the 2004 Super Bowl.
Investigators said they learned about Robert's scheme because he had alerted the media.
"In fact, he did try to scale the side over here on Walker and one of the officers was able to grab him and bring him down," said Houston police Lt. D.B. Edwards. "Apparently this guy does this all throughout the world. He wanted some media attention so we were able to come out here and be on the lookout for him."
According to his Web site, Robert has climbed more than 60 skyscrapers and landmarks worldwide, including the Eiffel Tower, the Empire State Building, Chicago's Sears Tower and the Sydney Harbor Bridge in Australia.
There was no word on what charges—if any—Robert will face.
"I think that there is still that spirit of freedom in the United States," Robert said as he was hustled away. "For me, life is a game."
