Authorities Arrest Suspected Balloon Thief

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Authorities have arrested a man they say stole a hot-air balloon from a Knox County home and then broke into another residence where he forced the family there to feed him.

Gregory Allen Williams, 40, was caught by police Friday night as he left the house authorities say he broke into during the evening. Williams made the family there feed him, though the couple's adult daughter hid in a closet and alerted authorities by using her cell phone, said Loudon County Assistant Chief Deputy Jimmy Davis.

The hot-air balloon, which belongs to James Hood, was packed in a trailer and parked in his driveway Friday morning when a neighbor saw someone hitch the trailer to a vehicle and take off, authorities say.

Knox County Sheriff Tim Hutchison said a pursuit then started. The suspect eventually ditched his vehicle and the balloon trailer in a field in Loudon County and fled into nearby woods.

Hood recovered his trailer and balloon, valued at nearly $30,000. Authorities say Williams was already wanted on a probation violation warrant and now faces felony theft charges.

Cops Follow Meat Trail to Suspected Thief

MARION, Ind. (AP) - Forget about bread crumbs, police say a shoplifter in Indiana left a trail of meat behind him.

Johnny McCray had grabbed 19 packages of meat, some weighing more than a pound, from Lance's New Market in Marion, police said.

An officer tried to stop McCray in his car with the steaks and roasts, but police said he took off, chucking the meat out the window as he went.

Shortly thereafter, he abandoned the car near an apartment complex and was captured after he ran away.

Police spent about 90 minutes Wednesday retrieving the stolen meat from the streets of the city about halfway between Indianapolis and Fort Wayne.

McCray, 39, was held Wednesday at the Grant County Jail on preliminary charges of criminal recklessness, criminal recklessness with a vehicle, resisting law enforcement with a vehicle and theft.

Man Argues He's Too Overweight for Jail

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) - A man who allowed his home to be used to store crack cocaine that was shipped by mail was sentenced to 14 years in prison, federal officials said.

Michael Washington, 32, pleaded guilty last January to making his home available for the storage of crack cocaine, according to a news release from the U.S. attorney's office.

Washington, who weighs 574 pounds, argued during sentencing that he was too obese and in too poor of health to be adequately cared for in prison, and requested home confinement. However, the court said the agency was capable of addressing his medical needs.

Prosecutors said he admitted that in October 2001 he and his wife tried to obtain a package of crack sent from a source in California through the U.S. mail.

Officers seized the package and found more than 100 grams of cocaine inside. They resealed the package and had it delivered to Washington's residence. When officers entered the home, they found the opened package and Washington in the basement, the news release said.

The U.S. attorney's office said that during the sentencing hearing on Thursday, Washington admitted that he had been involved in the sale of crack cocaine since 1996.

Arsonist Torched Himself, Court Hears

BRISBANE, Australia (AP) - A bungling arsonist who allegedly tried three times to torch a hairdressing salon ended up setting himself ablaze, an Australian court heard Monday.

Shane Long was allegedly hired to set fire to the salon by neighboring shop owner Erich Alexander Sorger.

Prosecutor Kate Youngson told Brisbane District Court that Sorger, who has pleaded innocent to four arson charges, set fire to his TV repair shop in the east coast city of Brisbane in March 2004 and then hired Long to set fire to the hairdressing salon, in a possible attempt to throw police off the scent.

But Long, who allegedly was paid 400 Australian dollars ($300), proved to be a hapless arsonist, failing on three separate occasions to set the salon alight and ending up torching his own clothes with a petrol bomb, Youngson said. He was not injured.

Long has been charged with being an accessory to the arson. His case is being dealt with separately.

Man Climbs Utility Tower After Chase

ELKHART, Ind. (AP) - A man spent more than an hour about 30 feet up a utility tower after leading police officers on a chase through Elkhart County.

Joshua Orrick, 20, of Elkhart, climbed the metal tower that carries power lines near Indiana 19, a few miles south of Elkhart around 9 p.m. Sunday.

Police officers reported they were chasing a van driven by Orrick at high speeds for about 15 minutes before it ran off the road and caught fire. Orrick ran from the van through a field and climbed the tower, police said.

Negotiators were brought in to talk with Orrick before he climbed down from the tower about 10:30 p.m.

"He did move up and down the tower several times," said Trevor Wendzonka, a spokesman for the Elkhart County Police Department. "He did eventually though, through some mediation, come down from the tower. Our officer did have to make sure he had fully come off the tower but everything worked out."

Orrick suffered bites to his right forearm as a police dog took him down to the ground, Wendzonka said.

Orrick was treated and released from a local hospital, then booked in jail. He was being held Monday without bond on two charges of resisting law enforcement, Wendzonka said.

An Elkhart County police officer was slightly injured when his car ran off the road and struck a tree while he was responding to the chase.

Caught: Bank robber with "Dumb" tattoo

WATERFORD, Mich. (Court TV) - When Andrew Jeffrey Webster went on the lam, police in Waterford, Mich., were confident that there would be little difficulty identifying him.

The bank robbery suspect had the word "Dumb" tattooed on the inside of his right arm.

"We figured that someone would see him walking around with the tattoo and give us a call," Sgt. Todd Hasselbach said.

According to a police document, Webster, 21, allegedly held up a National City Bank on Nov. 15. He approached a teller with a note demanding money and later fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash. No weapons were used during the robbery.

Although Webster's tattoo was not visible during the incident — he wore a green jacket, black knit hat, black scarf and gloves — the suspect is well known to Waterford police, who made sure to include the distinct body art in their description of the suspect.

Webster was arrested on Nov. 19 in Detroit. He was arraigned and charged with bank robbery the next day. He is in the Oakland County Jail on $150,000 cash bond.

Man arrested for wearing transparent pants

PELHAM, Ala. (Court TV) - Can you see me now?

The women that Darnell Evans allegedly accosted all had very vivid and unsettling glimpses of the Pelham, Ala., resident.

He was wearing see-through pants.

The 29-year-old man has been charged with several counts of indecent exposure in Pelham after he allegedly exposed his genitals to four different women. According to Lieutenant Scott Tucker of the Pelham Police Department, Evan's pants were made of a transparent plastic-type material and he wore no underwear.

Evans, a convicted sex offender from California, allegedly would walk up to his victims and attempt to engage them in conversation, directing their gaze towards his lower region.

"He would ask them, 'What do you think?' or if they could see what he had," Tucker said.

Evans is suspected in similar crimes in neighboring Helena, Alabaster and on the University of Alabama's Birmingham campus.

The earliest reported incident in Pelham occurred on October 10, the last on Nov. 15. One of the victim's was able to provide police with a description of the suspect's car and license plate numbers. When police produced a photo lineup, Evans was positively identified.

Tucker said Evans turned himself in after police contacted his probation officer. After Evans posted bond on the misdemeanor charges in Pelham, officers from Helena were waiting to take him back to their jurisdiction to face similar charges there.

Woman Allegedly Hires Hit Man for Cheese

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - In an unusual case of mistaken identity, a woman who thought a block of white cheese was cocaine is charged with trying to hire a hit man to rob and kill four men. The woman also was mistaken about the hit man. He turned out to be an undercover police officer.

Jessica Sandy Booth, 18, was arrested over the weekend and remains in jail with bond set at $1 million on four charges of attempted murder and four counts of soliciting a murder.

According to police, Booth was in the Memphis home of the four intended victims last week when she mistook a block of queso fresco cheese for cocaine — inspiring the idea to hire someone to break into the home, take the drugs, and kill the men.

An informant described the plot to police, who arranged a meeting between Booth and the undercover officer.

The undercover officer gave Booth some nonfunctioning handguns, bought ammunition for her because she was too young, and the two proceeded to the home under police surveillance.

Booth told the officer that any children inside the house old enough to testify would have to be killed, police said.

A search of the home with the permission of the occupants revealed no drugs — only the white, crumbly cheese common in Mexican cuisine.

"Four men were going to lose their lives over some cheese," said Lt. Jeff Clark, who heads Project Safe Neighborhoods.

Man Jailed After Biting Head Off Gecko

PORT JERVIS, N.Y. (AP) - A 19-year-old man was behind bars Tuesday after allegedly biting the head off a gecko as part of a bet.

Derrick Ford was being held in the Orange County Jail after being charged with felony animal cruelty, police said.

Ford was at a friend's home Sunday when someone bet him $10 that he wouldn't bite the head off a gecko, the Times Herald-Record of Middletown reported.

Though Ford won the bet, it wasn't long before police showed up and placed him under arrest, the newspaper said.

Ford, who also was charged with violating parole, is now awaiting further court action.

Capt.: 'Grinch' steals wrapped presents

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - A Portland man acted as a real life Grinch, stealing a video game console, an iPod, clothing, toys and other items that were wrapped as Christmas presents, police said Wednesday.

Philip Scott, 37, was charged Wednesday with theft, burglary and criminal mischief for allegedly breaking into a woman's home in Gray the day before and making off with the presents and other items.

He was arrested following a high-speed chase, after which police discovered that his driver's license had been suspended 26 times, officials said.

"That's pretty low," said Capt. Bill Rhoads of the Cumberland County Sheriff's Department. "To go into somebody's house and clean out presents is pretty disgusting."

Police in the town of Cumberland stopped Scott shortly before midnight Tuesday for a burned-out license plate light, said Cumberland Police Chief Joe Charron.

When the officer approached, the vehicle sped off toward Portland. The chase ended in Portland when Scott stopped and gave up, Charron said.

Scott was charged with operating after suspension, refusing to stop, criminal speeding, reckless conduct and driving to endanger. When the arresting officer, Sgt. Bradley Rogers, checked Scott's driving record, it turned out that his license had been suspended 26 times.

That's more suspensions than Scott Hewitt, the Caribou truck driver who became a poster boy for bad drivers after a fatal accident in July. Hewitt had a driving record that included 63 convictions and 23 license suspensions, and had been involved in a previous fatal accident.

"They're a menace. What else can I say?" Charron said about people who drive on suspended licenses.

After Scott's arrest, police learned that he might have been involved in the home burglary in Gray earlier that day.

When officers visited a home early Wednesday morning where they were told the stolen presents would be, they saw a stolen Christmas stocking with the name "Kayla" on it hanging from a hook in the living room.

The woman who lived at the home said Scott told her to mind her own business when she asked him earlier in the day where the presents had come from, Rhoads said.

The stolen items included a PlayStation video game console, an iPod, shoes, clothing, a paintball gun and accessories, and other items. Some of the stolen presents were intended for the woman's son, who has been serving in Iraq, Rhoads said.

"What a Grinch," he said.

Women Charged After Stopping for Apple Pie

CHURCH HILL, Tenn. (AP) - Two women's craving for apple pie got them in a pickle. The manager of a McDonald's restaurant called police Tuesday after the women, whom employees say were acting strangely as they ordered the pies at a drive-through, struck the side of the building with their pickup.

When officers arrived, they found Heather Amber Anderson, 24, inside the restaurant and behind the counter trying to open a cash register.

"I asked her what she was doing, and she stated she was trying to pay for her food," Sgt. Chad Mosely wrote in his report. "I checked with the manager and learned that the girl was not an employee and that she had been fired approximately two weeks ago."

Mosely said Anderson was unsteady on her feet and her speech was slurred. He charged her with public intoxication and possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

Outside, the driver of the pickup, 41-year-old Neeica Jean Mull, also appeared intoxicated and told police she had taken prescription medication. She was charged with driving under the influence.

Cops Track Alleged Burglar With Footprints

LANSDALE, Pa. (AP) - A man accused of burglarizing an auto-repair shop and stealing cash and a digital camera apparently didn't plan on a fresh snowfall.

Lansdale police said footprints in the new snow Tuesday led to the arrest of David J. Schild Jr. in connection with a burglary at Trails Automotive, where a window was broken and the building was ransacked.

"The footprints went right from the scene of the burglary to the front door where he lived, about a block away," Sgt. Dean Miller said. He said a pair of sneakers was found in the basement with a pattern that matched the footprints.

Miller said Schild admitted breaking into the garage. He was charged with burglary, attempted burglary, criminal trespass and possession of an instrument of crime, arraigned before Lansdale District Judge Harold Borek, and held in the Montgomery County Prison on $50,000 bail, with a preliminary hearing scheduled Dec. 16.

Inmate Arrested Shortly After Release

JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) - It was only a small taste of freedom. David Mulligan, 21, served 25 days for drunken driving, and was released at 7 a.m. Tuesday. Authorities allege he stole a van three minutes later.

A man who lives a block from the Lemon Creek Correctional Center had left his 1997 Dodge van running to warm up. When he came out of the house, it was gone.

Two hours later, the owner called police on a cell phone, saying he was following the stolen van in traffic.

Police responded, and said they found Mulligan alone in the van.

He now faces up to five years in prison and a $50,000 fine if convicted of felony vehicle theft.

Man in Santa suit charged with dropping his pants at mall

SALEM, N.H. (Court TV) - Police in Salem, N.H., have added Richard Mullen's name to their naughty list.

The 52-year-old man was dressed in a Santa suit on December 4 when he allegedly dropped his pants at least twice in the middle of a local mall. Luckily for shoppers, the wardrobe malfunction was PG-rated — Mullen was wearing sweatpants underneath the suit.

Salem Police Capt. Robert Larsen said upset customers contacted mall security, who contacted police before escorting Mullen out of the mall. On the way out, the Massachusetts resident, who is not an employee of the mall, again dropped his pants in front of incoming customers.

Larsen said the fake Santa's multiple wardrobe malfunctions were not accidental. When police officers arrested Mullen in the mall's parking lot, he reportedly told them that he was "just having fun with the kids." Larsen was unable to verify if any children witnessed the incidents.

Mullen was charged with disorderly conduct and posted $200 bail. He is scheduled to be arraigned in Salem District Court on January 9.

Man steals airport Christmas tree

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (Court TV) - The Yuletide theft of a Christmas tree at the Gerald R. Ford International Airport in Michigan would have gone unsolved if the criminal had not left behind an incriminating piece of evidence — his checkbook.

Maintenance workers decorating the grounds of the airport for the holidays discovered the theft on December 2.

According to the newspaper The Grand Rapids Press, airport police investigating the crime scene found the checkbook lying in the debris of pine needles and wood chips from the 6-foot-tall spruce tree.

The checkbook led police to the thief, who has not been identified and who lives near the airport. The Christmas tree was reportedly fully decorated when officers entered the man's home.

After the man admitted to the theft, he was ordered to remove all the decorations before police could take the tree as evidence, the report said.

The man may have to pay $800 to replace the tree.

Robber returns to locate dropped gun

BEAUFORD COUNTY, S.C. (Court TV) - Police in Beaufort County, S.C., arrested a robber who dropped his gun at the scene of the crime and returned later to retrieve the weapon.

John Raheem Sweat, 22, allegedly held up a hotel's front desk clerk at gunpoint and fled with an undisclosed amount of cash. On his way to his getaway car, he inexplicably dropped his gun without realizing it.

Beaufort County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Debbie Szpanka said when Sweat discovered his gun was missing, he returned with his accomplice to the hotel's parking lot to retrieve the weapon. Sweat reportedly found the gun, but was trapped in the area because of police activity.

Deputies conducting a search of cars in the area approached Sweat's vehicle and found the gun in plain view on the car floor. Sweat and his accomplice, Colita Janai Murray, were arrested.

Sweat was charged with armed robbery and unlawful possession of a firearm. Murray, 25, received a drug possession charge for cocaine that was found on her during the search; she was released the next day.

Sweat is being held in the Beaufort County Detention Center on $15,000 bond.

Naked Man Charged With Breaking Into Home

ANKENY, Iowa (AP) - A Wisconsin man was caught displaying more than his holiday cheer, police said. Boyd Glenn Webb, 35, was naked when officers found him Dec. 2 at a home near a rest stop on Interstate 35 north of Ankeny, a police spokesman said.

Police said maintenance workers at the rest stop reported seeing a man walking west of the rest stop and through a ravine, taking off his clothes as he walked. The temperature at the time was about 18 degrees, officials with the National Weather Service said.

The man was completely naked by the time he reached the other side of the ravine, police said.

The man continued to walk to a residential area. When officers arrived, they saw tracks made by bare feet leading to the back of a house, Ankeny police Capt. Arnie Porath said.

A patio door had been forced open and the man was found inside, Porath said.

No one was home, he said.

Webb was charged with third-degree burglary.

Porath said it's believed Webb's car broke down near Ames and he walked or hitchhiked nearly 20 miles to the rest area.

Police Seek Less-Than-Greedy Bank Robber

RENO, Nev. (AP) - He's not especially greedy, but he's a bank robber nonetheless and Reno police are looking for him.

An Hispanic man in his mid-20s approached a teller at the Bank of America on the north edge of downtown Thursday afternoon and presented a note demanding $500 worth of fifties, Reno detectives said.

The suspect, who fled on foot with the money, is described as about 5-foot-6, 165 pounds. He was clean shaven and witnesses say he had noticeably light blue eyes, police said.

He was last seen wearing a black knit cap, black pants and a black sweat shirt with a hood. He fled the bank at 700 North Virginia Street at about 4:30 p.m.
