Woman Allegedly Bites Off Officer's Finger
MILWAUKEE, Wis. - A police officer had part of a finger bitten off by a woman after he responded to a call about a dispute over a cat, authorities say. Lt. Robert Menzel said the 40-year-old woman who called police Sunday afternoon had argued with a man about the animal and wanted him removed from her home.
The officer, a 10-year veteran, tried to restrain the woman, and she became belligerent and she bit off part of his right ring finger, Menzel said.
Surgeons at Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital were not able to reattach the finger, the lieutenant said.

Cops: Thieves Try to Sell Art to Gallery
MENLO PARK, Calif. (AP) - In the world of high stakes crimes, this was no work of art. Instead, police arrested three people after they tried to sell paintings worth tens of thousands of dollars back to the gallery that owned the artwork.
Deanna Joao, 46, of South San Francisco, was arrested Sunday after she was allegedly caught with two paintings worth $45,000, according to police. Jeffrey Harp, 33, and Derek Hanson, 41, tried to flee but were caught after a police dog bit Hanson's leg.
The gallery owner's car was stolen in San Francisco on Nov. 23 with $75,000 to $100,000 worth of paintings inside. The vehicle was later found, but the paintings were gone.
The gallery then started getting calls in early December from a man saying he wanted to bring in a painting for appraisal. The artwork sounded familiar and the owners set up surveillance.
The trio finally showed up at the gallery on Sunday evening.
Hanson was expected to be booked into jail on charges of possession of stolen property, conspiracy and burglary. Joao and Harp were booked on similar charges.
Police believe the other paintings may have been hidden.

Mexican Restaurant Workers Foil Robbery
MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) - An English-speaking man's efforts to rob a Mexican restaurant were foiled by a worker who spoke only Spanish and another who pretended not to know English, police said.
Witnesses told police that James Adams, 44, acted as if he had a gun and ordered an employee at Puerto Vallarta Mexican Restaurant and Cantina to open a cash register. The employee did not speak English and was confused about what was happening, said Muncie police Sgt. Al Williams.
A second employee acted as if he did not speak English, stalling Adams while another employee and a customer called police, Williams said.
Police arrived and arrested Adams on charges of attempted robbery and robbery. Adams was released on bond early Tuesday.
Police say Adams is believed to have committed at least one other robbery in the past three weeks. Adams admitted robbing Pleasures, an adult novelty store, on Nov. 28, Williams said.
"Most of our robberies all lead back to a drug addiction and that's what was going on with him," Williams said.
Another man who was with Adams was also arrested, but was not charged with a crime because he had not intended to become involved in the holdup and cooperated with investigators, Williams said.

Police nab car theft suspects with pictures they took of themselves
REDLANDS, Calif. (AP) — Police in California say they had a lot of help nabbing a pair of car theft suspects — from the suspects themselves.
The men left behind not only fingerprints, but also photos of themselves sitting inside and standing outside the stolen 2001 Ford Mustang, police said.
The photos were taken with a disposable camera the suspects found in the Mustang, which they left behind when they abandoned the car.
"These are not the brightest people," said Carl Baker, a Redlands police department spokesman.
The fingerprints and photos led police to the Redlands home of Albert Engelsman on Friday. Police say he was wearing the same shirt he had on in the photographs.
"Once he was confronted with this evidence, he pretty much realized he was done in," Baker said.
Engelsman, 28, was charged with grand theft auto and possession of stolen property, Baker said. He is free on bail.
An arrest warrant on the same charges has been issued for his alleged accomplice, Matthew Montanez, 22, of Rialto, Baker said.
Both men have unlisted telephone numbers.
Redlands is about 80 miles east of Los Angeles.

Man Allegedly Tries to Alter Ticket
PORTSMOUTH, N.H. - Next time, just pay the ticket. William S. Shufro, 46, faces a felony forgery charge for allegedly trying to alter a $100 ticket received for parking illegally in a handicapped space.
Police allege that Shufro tried to alter the ticket to give the appearance that it had been issued for parking in a no-parking zone, which carries just a $20 fine.
The altered ticket was sent to City Hall, along with $20, Police Lt. Fred Hoysradt said.
Police, who had a copy of the original ticket, saw the change — then charged Shufro with forgery, a felony punishable by 3 1/2 to seven years in prison, Hoysradt said.
Shufro was arraigned on the charge in Portsmouth District Court on Monday.
"Your honor, this is a parking violation," Shufro told Judge Sharon DeVries as he was being arraigned.
DeVries corrected him.
A hearing on the case has been scheduled for Jan. 3 in Portsmouth District Court.

Arrested Man Said to Escape in Cruiser
SELDEN, N.Y. (AP) - A Florida man arrested Saturday for alleged drunken driving slipped off his handcuffs, slid into the driver's seat of a police car and sped off, police said. He was captured a short time later.
Just before the incident, Thomas Elflein, 26, was spotted trying to avoid a DWI checkpoint by pulling into a gas station around 12:30 a.m., said Suffolk County Police Detective Sgt. William Lamb.
Officers handcuffed him and put him in the back of a marked police car, Lamb said. But while an officer was outside recording license information, Elflein pulled off the handcuffs, got into the driver's seat and drove away, Lamb said. He said Elflein eventually abandoned the police car and was tracked down by search dogs.
Elflein, of Deltona, Fla., was charged with third-degree grand larceny, resisting arrest, third-degree escape, driving while intoxicated and aggravated unlicensed operation.
He was to be arraigned in district court in Central Islip, on Long Island.

Man Caught in Restroom After Wacky Chase
WICHITA, Kan. (AP) - What started with a car theft turned into an escape and resulting chase that ended with the male fugitive being caught hiding out in a woman's restroom by an officer who received a ride from a pizza deliveryman.
Wichita police say an officer who stopped a car Sunday afternoon discovered that it was a vehicle stolen from a sales lot two days earlier. The driver, a 30-year-old man, said he had some injuries that needed treatment. Police, who didn't know the nature of the injuries the man claimed to have, had him taken to a hospital emergency room.
Police said that after being treated the man asked to use the restroom and an officer escorted him there and waited outside. A short time later, he was spotted in the air lock at the exit of the emergency room, and he ran out of the hospital with the officer in pursuit, police said.
The restroom had only one door, and police said the man must have stood on a railing in the stall, climbed into the ceiling and made his way to the exit.
Police said the man conned a motorist at a convenience store into giving him a ride. A pizza delivery driver who saw the pursuing officer gave him a ride and they followed the car to a fast food restaurant.
When the officer went in, he spotted the man peeking out the door of the women's restroom and took him back into custody.

Footprints in snow lead to burglary suspect's arrest
LANSDALE, Pa. (Court TV) — David J. Schild Jr. probably did not count on Mother Nature playing a role in his capture on burglary charges.
Every step he took to the three businesses he allegedly targeted and the return trip to his home was imprinted in the fresh snow that fell on the early morning of Dec. 6.
Lansdale Police Sgt. Dean Miller said officers were called to investigate two attempted burglaries and one successful break-in — all three within a two-block radius. An automotive store had been ransacked, and an undisclosed amount of cash and a digital camera were missing. At a pizza store, someone had tried to force open the front and back doors, and a window had been broken at a car dealership.
Investigators observed that all three crime scenes shared the same set of shoe imprints. The officers then followed the footprints from the third location, the automotive store, to Schild's home.
Sgt. Miller said Schild's landlord let officers into the house, where Schild initially could not explain the fresh injuries to his hand. When the landlord gave permission for the house to be searched, Schild admitted to the crimes and directed officers to a pair of sneakers with patterns on the soles that matched the footprints at the crime scenes. They also recovered a bag that contained tools that the suspect may have used in the first two burglary attempts.
Schild was charged with burglary, attempted burglary, criminal trespass and mischief, receiving stolen property, and possession of an instrument of crime. He was taken to the Montgomery County Jail and held on $50,000 bond.

Police: Door thwarted robbery suspect's escape attempt
JOPLIN, Mo. (Court TV) - A suspect wanted for a convenience-store holdup in Joplin, Mo., may just be this year's dumbest criminal.
According to Joplin Police Detective Jason Schanot, a masked gunman held up a store at about 2:17 a.m. on Nov. 21 and effortlessly removed an undisclosed amount of money from the cash register — the store clerk was hiding in a back room. But the suspect's escape was more complicated.
When the suspect tried to leave the store, he was unable to open the door. The store's front door swings inward and customers have to pull the door open to leave. Detective Schanot said the robber pushed at the door when he should have pulled.
This oversight jumpstarted what became a protracted and comical escape attempt that was caught on the store's surveillance camera.
The robber reportedly hurled himself against the door several times before attempting to kick it open. When that failed, he hurled a magazine rack at the door but was unable to break the glass. He then took the rack to the store's window, shattered the glass and escaped.
Joplin police have not yet apprehended the suspect. He is described as a black man in his mid-20s and over 6 feet tall. At the time of the robbery, the suspect had a T-shirt wrapped around his head and wore a surgical mask. Anyone with information can call the Joplin police department at (417) 623-3131.

Police wait for suspected jewel thief's swallowed diamond rings
ST. LOUIS, Mo. (Court TV) - St. Louis County police are willing to be patient with Mark Valenti. After all, a basic tenet of human physiology is in their favor: What goes in always comes out.
The 43-year-old man allegedly stole two diamond rings from a jewelry store and swallowed them when he was about to be apprehended.
According to a police document, Valenti entered the store at about 3 p.m. on Dec. 7 and asked to see two women's rings. When presented with the rings, worth $9,000 total, he allegedly slipped them on a finger and ran from the establishment.
The store clerk and other observers pursued the alleged jewel thief, but when they caught up to him, he swallowed the rings.
Valenti confessed the theft to police, and an X-ray examination displayed the two rings inside of his digestive tract. The suspect was charged with felony stealing and bond was set at $25,000.
Authorities, though, are still waiting for the hard evidence.
St. Louis County Sergeant Mason Keller said the robber's body has yet to relinquish the rings.
"He's x-rayed everyday and the rings are still there," Keller said. "They're working their way through his system."
Officers at the jail have turned off the water supply to the toilet in Valenti's cell and are conducting periodic searches in case he tries to dispose of the rings when his body relinquishes them.
Sgt. Keller said the jail's medical staff has yet to determine if the rings will be retrieved surgically.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - A polite bank robber was ordered evaluated at a Buffalo hospital after taking $50 and waiting for police to arrest him.
"Please give me $50 so I can go to jail," the 32-year-old man's note to a teller said. "No one will get hurt and I will wait for the police outside. Sorry for the inconvenience."
The teller complied and the man calmly waited in the lobby of the HSBC Bank branch to be arrested Wednesday, police said.
The man's name was not immediately released by police. The results of the evaluation were not available early Thursday.

Alleged Burglar's Car Gets Stuck in Ice
SCARBOROUGH, Maine (AP) - A man faced a burglary charge after his car got stuck on the icy driveway of a house that had just been burglarized.
Shawn Tarr, 29, of Portland, was in court Friday afternoon being arraigned, officials at the Cumberland County Jail in Portland said.
Tarr was arrested Thursday in Scarborough after police received a report of a burglary in progress at a home on Broadturn Road in this southern Maine town.
As the owner returned home, she found a car in the driveway. Tarr told the woman that he was turning around when he got stuck in ice on her driveway, and asked her to back up the car while he pushed, police said. The woman, who was not identified by police, complied, but also was unable to move the car.
The woman, who had noticed her laptop computer on the rear the seat of the car as she walked by the car, returned to her house as Tarr tried frantically to move the vehicle, police said. Her daughter had already called police.
Scarborough officer Doug Weed said Tarr was trying to shove boards under the wheels of the icebound car when he arrived.
Police discovered Tarr had several warrants out for his arrest, including one for burglary. Police also say Tarr's car turned out to be stolen from a Westbrook dealership.
"Christmas cards taken from the Broadturn Road residence were found under the seat of the vehicle," police said.

BLUE SPRINGS, Mo. (AP) -- A woman who police thought deliberately tried to swallow her cell phone during an argument with her boyfriend was apparently the victim of an assault instead, authorities said.
Police have a suspect in the bizarre incident that sent the 24-year-old woman to the hospital last week, Sgt. Allen Kintz said. Police would not say whether the boyfriend was the suspect and would not explain exactly what they believe happened.
"It appears she didn't voluntarily swallow this phone," Kintz said. "It's not quite the way it was first portrayed."
Early Friday, police responded to a call from a Blue Springs man who said his girlfriend was having trouble breathing. Police arrived to find a woman with a cell phone lodged in her throat.

Police were initially told the boyfriend wanted the phone and the woman tried to swallow it so that he could not get it.

Fake Money Stolen From Thai Bank
BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) - Three teenage robbers in Thailand have been arrested after a sharp-eyed street vendor noticed they were trying to spend fake money — that had been stolen from a bank — police said.
The two 15-year-old boys and a 16-year-old girl broke into the Siam Commercial Bank in the seaside resort of Pattaya early Monday, making off with a bundle of notes and mobile telephones, said police Maj. Sutham Chaosithong.
But the teens' haul also included a stack of fake bank notes, Sutham said.
Branch manager Kitiphol Kramwong said the bank had detected 30 fake notes in the past week, marked them as such, and left them in an easy-to-access drawer — which robbers had pilfered. It was not clear whether they realized they had stolen fake money.
While police were inspecting the scene of the crime, they were told that vendors at a nearby market had caught the three teenagers trying to buy goods with forged money, Sutham said Tuesday.
The young suspects have since been detained at a social welfare detention center pending a juvenile court ruling on the case, he said.
Pattaya, 110 kilometers (70 miles) southeast of Bangkok, is a beach town popular with Thai and foreign tourists.

Man Accused of Lobbing Urine Into Yards
CLIVE, Iowa (AP) - A Nebraska man has been arrested in central Iowa for allegedly delivering some unwanted Christmas gifts. Reno Tobler, 54, was arrested Thursday in Clive after police caught him lobbing urine bottles into backyards.
"We've got a Grinch that has been lobbing urine," said Clive Police Chief Robert Cox. "Since this fall, we've had eight to 10 incidents reported where people have found containers full of urine thrown into their backyards."
Tobler is a truck driver whose route regularly takes him to the Clive area. He was charged with littering and harassment for allegedly tossing detergent-sized bottles of his urine over fences.
Tobler told police that it was a longtime hobby of his to deliver the bottles. Police searched his vehicle and found several other urine-filled bottles ready for delivery.
Tobler was taken to the Polk County Jail and was released on a $500 bond.

Police: Meat Bandit Nabbed in Golf Cart
MEDINA, Ohio (AP) - It might have been a perfect getaway — after all, who would suspect that a person with a purloined roast would flee in a stolen golf cart? Samuel Dottore, 45, told a judge he intended to drive the cart about 40 miles from Medina to his home in Cleveland.
And it was working. He even stopped for gas.
But police searching for him as a suspect in the swiped meat caper nabbed him and the frozen roast.
Dottore pleaded guilty to theft Tuesday in Medina County Common Pleas Court. Judge Christopher Collier will sentence him Feb. 13 for stealing the golf cart.
Dottore's plight dates back about two months, when he met a couple in a bar and went to their home. A few hours later, the couple were driving him to a motel when he pulled out the frozen meat. They told police they dropped him along a roadside and returned home.
Police said Dottore then stole a golf cart from King George Service Co. and tried to make it his ride out of town.
Dottore does not have a listed telephone and could not be reached for comment. His lawyer, Paul Grant, declined comment Wednesday.
In court, Dottore told the judge he'd been drinking that day, and that alcohol mixed with the psychiatric medication he takes daily affects his judgment. Collier allowed Dottore to be released on bond until sentencing.
