The 'shot' -- that’s what Ambassador James Jeffrey called the decision to use an an Aegis SM-3 to try to shoot down satellite USA 193 in the next 3-12 days.

Holding the aside the politics of this — which are terrible — the briefing on debris risk left me cold. I have to say that I am very, very uneasy about this decision — our missile defense tests have been heavily scripted to minimize debris creation and modeling of debris creation isn’t an exact science.

From the news today there will be 3 different chances if necessary, the first one is a week from today. I don't know how to answer the rest of it.

They are going to do the shooting down of the dead satellite in the Northern Pacific Ocean,where there are no islands nor plane lanes.

Personally, I think it is worth a try. They said that the fuel once released is lethal to those nearby it, not to mention the fact that this thing can kill many if it hits land anywhere.

I think that if we can at least try and mitigate the impact of this satellite then we should do it.

I agree that they have to give it a try.But there are risks in this kind of operation that may turn bad.Lets see when the best moment to do it occurs and see if it is a success.

That is a good point that is very important,because when the dead satellite falls somewhere,someone may steal some debris that may have valuable information.

58.5N and 58.6S which pretty much covers the entire world. I'm not sure they would tell if they did know. More people would died in the evacuation than in staying put. IF they said it is going to fall in the state of Florida on March 6th, what do you think people would do? Not a pretty picture.

I wouldn't think so. Granted, I'm not an expert, but from my understanding, the components itself wouldn't be sensitive, but rather the data/imagery the satellite obtained would be. That's not stored on the satellite, so it's really not an issue.

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia's Defence Ministry said on Saturday a U.S. plan to shoot down an ailing spy satellite could be used as a cover to test a new space weapon.

The ministry said there was insufficient proof that Washington's decision to fire a missile at the disabled satellite was to prevent a potentially deadly leak of toxic gas as it re-entered Earth's atmosphere.

"In our opinion, the decision to destroy the U.S. satellite is not as harmless as it is being presented. Especially as the United States has been avoiding talks on restricting a space arms race for quite a long time," the ministry's information department said in a statement.
