Looks like as of now only the gunman is dead... several with head injuries but no other confirmed fatalities.

I hadn't turned on the TV or been online since earlier today. I had no idea another school shooting had happened. When is this going to stop? I grieve for the families of those that lost their lives (4 last time I heard). I have a daughter in college, her campus just conducted an emergency text message alert system this week. And it worked. You have no idea what a comfort a drill like that is to this mom, after I read about another school campus shooting.

I heard it's the FIFTH school shooting in 6 weeks. It's really sad.
and yeah, I've heard 6 if you include the gunman.

Technically, the second amendment establishes the right to well-regulated state universal militia (basically, any able-bodied man with a proper weapon who could serve - the precursor to today's National Guard). The text of the amendment was fairly unclear, but that was much of the original intent. Various cases and other texts (such as the Declaration of Independence) refer to the "right to bear arms" as the right to bear arms in the service of said militia.
Unfortunately, different sessions of Congress and various justices of the Supreme Court have never been able to figure out exactly what this amendment was supposed to mean (that is, does it mean what I just suggested it meant? or does it mean something else entirely?). The militia aspect is clear, but nothing else.

It's actually fairly clear, unless someone wants to muddy it up. The need for a militia is the primary supporting reason for the right to bear arms. The sentence construction is both deliberate and clear.

Re: Major shooting at Northern Illinois University
Sad story, for sure. Seems so unnecessary especially when it ends in a suicide.
NIU is my alma matre. I love and have always supported the school. I graduated from the earth sciences department there many years ago.
I remember my own geology lecture hall days.
It is a tragedy that especially hits home with me, but thus far our family and friends back in Illinois have been spared personally.
But that doesn't take the pain and helpless feeling of the moment away.

Sigh, I got this in my email today, totally senseless why it had to happen:
I'm asking for all of your prayers for my youngest son....... My son's fiancee
was shot and killed yesterday. She was a student at Northern Illinois
University. My son is about losing his mind over this and he lives in Illinois
and I live in Tennessee, I wish I could just hold him, He was waiting for her to
come home from school all day yesterday so he could propose to her.
