Is that time again to move the clocks foward one hour to start Daylight Saving Time next sunday the 9th of March.For the U.S. and its territories, Daylight Saving Time is not observed in Hawaii, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, the Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands, and Arizona.The Navajo Nation participates in the Daylight Saving Time policy,even in Arizona,due to its large size and location in three states.

those longer daylight hours at the end of the day, YAY i cant beleive its only a week away. Though it wont be necessarilly warmer, at least in the first few weeks, its gonna feel a whole lot better. I cant wait *HOLDS BREATH*

Congress is studying the impacts of the more longer Daylight Saving Time period.They reserve the right to roll it back to the first sunday of April and the last sunday of October.

On August 8, 2005, President George W. Bush signed the Energy Policy Act of 2005. This Act changed the time change dates for Daylight Saving Time in the U.S. Beginning in 2007, DST will begin on the second Sunday in March and end the first Sunday in November. The Secretary of Energy will report the impact of this change to Congress. Congress retains the right to resume the 2005 Daylight Saving Time schedule once the Department of Energy study is complete.

I read an article somewhere that the energy saved is negligible. The amount of energy saved by not turning on lights in the evening is washed out by the energy used to run air conditioners in the summer.

I knew in the end the reasoning just had to be entirely pointless.

I don't think we should change the clocks in the first place, I see absolutely no need for it.

I doubt the veracity of the study in question. An $8.6 million increase in electricity spending in a state of ~2.5 Million households (or ~$3.20 per household) over the course of a 6 month period is negligible at best. Further, it doesn't seem to adjust for increased energy costs.

Maybe it's me, maybe this is a stupid thing to say, but I would think you would want it to get darker at night quicker in the summer so you wouldn't use your AC as much? I love the longer days in the summer don't get me wrong, but Congress thinking that this will save energy??? Yeah right.

I think the idea isn't about AC. Most people (at least around here) don't adjust the AC, but rather have it set at a steady temperature. For instance, I leave my AC set at 74 all day long. DST doesn't affect that at all. However, having an extra hour of daylight during the most active period of the day (evening) saves me one hour from having to turn on lights throughout the house.

Now, with that said, I agree... the savings is very minimal. Personally, I enjoy DST because of that extra daylight during the evening hours. However, I'm not a fan of mixing up the days of DST from year to year.

Arizona did observe DST in 1967 under the Uniform Time Act because the state legislature did not enact an exemption statute that year. In March 1968, the DST exemption statute was enacted and the state of Arizona has not observed DST since 1967 (however, the large Navajo Indian Reservation, which extends from Arizona into two adjacent states, does). This is in large part due to energy conservation since the temperature in and around Phoenix and Tucson is hotter than any other large U.S. metropolitan area during the summer, resulting in more power usage from air conditioning units and evaporative coolers in homes and businesses. An extra hour of sunlight while people are active would cause people to run their cooling systems longer, thereby using more energy.
