Jane Austen fans

#1 Postby sunny » Fri Mar 28, 2008 9:32 am

How many Jane Austen fans are out there? I love her books and movies. "Pride and Prejudice" and "Sense and Sensibility" are two of my all time favorite. I watched "Becoming Jane" last night which is Jane Austen's life story. It was so good, but I was sad for her as well :(

Cindy - just wait until southerngale/Kelly sees this topic. She's a devoted P & P fan!

My first introduction into P & P was when my daughter went up to Blockbuster and rented it (newer version with Keira K.). I loved it. She did too! Her sister was bored though, she hates historical romance movies! Anyway, I loved the movie Keira was in but heard the A & E special was even better, so I rented that from Blockbuster a while back. Both are good, but I'm partial to my intro into her books/movies - Keira was superb in it.

Movies and books like Austen's just takes me back to a gentler time, when most people treated others well and with respect. I said most, some of course didn't.

Sometimes you just have to watch movies like this to see another way to live, get along with others, etc.

My best example of course, are the Anne of Green Gables books (7 in all) and movies. Give me an Anne day and I'm transported back to another time......LOL

I LOVE historical romances Mary! I could watch them time and time again lol.

I did prefer the P&P with Keira Knightley. The one with Colin Firth was good, but I just really like Keira! S&S though, I've almost worn that movie out lol.

I love both Pride & Prejudice and Sense & Sensibility. While I definitely enjoyed the Keira version, I was already a huge fan of the A&E version when I saw it, and it was like watching the Cowboys highlights instead of the game... or maybe like eating a bite of chocolate cake, instead of eating the whole piece. It just didn't seem complete. I still liked it a lot, but it just seemed rushed.
I had been used to having P&P marathons with my sister though... where we'd get together for a few days to watch P&P. That version just seems perfect, and very close to the book. We use certain catch phrases from it occasionally as well.
It was also my introduction to Colin Firth... if I had seen him in anything previously, I didn't recall it. I fell in love with Mr. Darcy!

I guess in comparison, it would be like if a short remake of Mary's beloved Anne movies came out. She might like it, a lot, but it could never replace the version she loves.

Anyhow, it's all good. It's Jane Austen, right?

I've never seen Becoming Jane, but sounds interesting. Guess I'll grab an extra box of Kleenex before I watch it!

Have you two seen Emma? I love the Gwyneth Paltrow version. The A&E version has Kate Beckingsale in it, who I like, but the Gwyneth version is a little more lighthearted. I haven't seen all of the A&E version though, just bits and pieces. Another great Jane Austen movie!

I haven't seen Emma but I've just put it on my list to get tomorrow lol! It'll probably end up on my top 10 list as well 8-) Add to my Jane Austen library :D

Kel, Becoming Jane was just so good. My friend rented it and let me borrow it. lol it's in my que at Block Buster to ship next and I'm leaving in there! I won't tell you too much - don't want to ruin it for you.

Mr. Darcy - oh he is my favorite male character so far! Well............never mind, like I said don't want to ruin it for you ;) It's a very close race now though lol!

Kelly - you are so right. I am very devoted to my shows, movies, characters and when you find one you just love, that one usually becomes your favorite. Example - when Richard Thomas left the Waltons, they recast the role of John Boy. Well......the new actor didn't last long and wasn't that popular! Same when Barbara Bel Geddes had to leave Dallas, no offense to Donna Reed but fans missed BBG, who played Miss Ellie to perfection. Same with movie remakes. I like the original Parent Trap (with Hayley Mills), Yours, Mine and Ours (with Henry Fonda and Lucille Ball).......I will almost always watch a remake but 9 out of 10 times I like the original more. So I completely understand why you love the A & E version of P & P. It is the ONE you loved first. And I did like it. I just swooned (do I sound old or what?) for Mr. Darcy in the the movie with Keira! Those eyes, those sideburns.......LOL

There's always talk about redoing the Anne movies. But to so many Anne fans, there can only be one Anne Shirley and that title belongs to Megan Follows!

Someday, when you have some down time Kelly, you need to check these DVD's out from your library or possibly Blockbuster:

Anne of Green Gables (1)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088727/

Anne of Green Gables: The Sequel (originally titled Anne of Avonlea) (2)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092571/

Anne of Green Gables: The Continuing Story (3)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0158466/

Kel, I watched 'EMMA' yesterday afternoon - it was so cute! Mary, you should watch it, you and Laura will enjoy it :) I feel a "Sense and Sensibility" afternoon coming on today lol.

I need to watch Mary's 'Anne of Green Gables' next.

I also rented 'Atonement' with Keira, it was set during the time of WWII. It was sad, but I thought it was a good movie.

Cindy - I would love to have a day to just watch Emma or other JA movies. But I've had my family, home and underfoot so it's not the best time to watch chick flicks - LOL! Nina's the one that loves JA type, historical romance movies but she's on campus right now. I'm alone in this category...wait, the dog might like them. She curls up with me when I watch movies like these! he he Spoken like a true chick flick movie kinda dog....she isn't a female Golden for nothing!

Anyway, I clicked on that Anne of G. G. link and browsed down to read the latest fan's comments, this fan says it all and so perfectly too! As if I wrote it:

From the IMDB Anne.....page:
Every time I watch Anne of Green Gables, I am transported out of my living room in California in 1999 and into the beautiful colorful time of 1908 and Avonlea, PEI. It is such a simple yet beautiful story. As a person who usually prefers movies nothing at all like this, I am shamelessly admitting that I adore everything about these stories from L.M. Montgomery. And even if they had put in a special order, they never could have found anyone more suitable to play Anne than Megan Follows. No matter what else I see her in, she's Anne Shirley, and she will always be the only Anne Shirley. If I'm stressed or upset, I have only to go to Anne's world. It's like an inexpensive vacation!!! : )

Indeed all of these movies are like inexpensive vacations!

Sooooooo.......Cindy and Kelly you'll both get a kick out of this. Last night, I was invited to a ladies night out on the street but thinly disguised as a Pampered Chef party. I knew of many women who couldn't get there for the first hour or so. I took a long bath, got dressed rather slowly, no rushing and then turned on the TV. Stumbled upon the Keira N. P & P. Near the end, the best part!

Sooooooo.......I watched, which made me later for the party.

So late, that my neighbor/hostess called me to ask - Mary, did you forget about the party? LOL

But 5 more women came after I got there......I did tell her later, hey I was late because of Mr. Darcy! LOL It was so hard to pull myself away.....also, hubby was out for the night (happy hour with guy friends), daughter was watching Harry Potter movies and such, it was pouring rain and 49.....the best set up for a P & P movie!

Dang, did I ever want to stay home....but I dragged myself across the street. Spending money too.....LOL

LOL Mary. I hear ya. It's hard to drag yourself away from a good movie, particularly that movie. I guess it's kind of hard to say, "I'd rather stay home and watch Pride & Prejudice, a movie that I've already seen, than go to your party." :P

Found out my other next door neighbor (favorite one by the way) skipped it b/c it was such a nasty night, wx wise and she has worked a long day. She washed off her makeup, put on sweats and slippers and then her husband reminded her - hey don't you have a street party to go to? LOL She said at that point, she wasn't going back to getting all made up again. Anyway, I told her why I didn't want to go - Mr. Darcy! LOL

And get this - this Pampered Chef sales lady is calling me, sending emails, etc. She wants one of us to host a party, I know it. I've said no and have a really good excuse - my HS senior is graduating in less than two months - happy and sad time - we are having a party for close to 70 in May! Not all 70 come at the same time though (turns into an open house) but still I was exhausted hosting Nina's party! So much to do......yeah I want to host a PC party, sure - NOT! Everyone at this party said to me - Mary, you broke your no home party rule! LOL True I did.....the sales lady overheard us and asked what this rule was - I laughed and said how these parties ruin your budget!

So now I really regret going.....I do hope she leaves me alone!

If only I had just watched P & P.....he he

I see no problem with doing this

I had a Jane Austen week-end Kel - P&P and S&S. I have the first two of Mary's Anne of Green Gables coming in.
