A good April Fools Joke by La Kalle 98.3 Miami

I always listen to this Spanish/English (Spanglish) radio station. The radio broadcasters are Enrique Santos and Joe Ferrero, and their team. The show has everything, including prank calls and all that stuff. Every year on April Fools day they always have very intense jokes, this year they announced that Cristian Castro, a famous Mexican singer, had died. Castro is 33 years old but has had recently a lot of problems with his also famous mother, Verónica Castro, and it's also going through a bad divorse situation.

Enrique Santos also announced that Joe Ferrero had been taken to jail because he physically abused his wife. Joe even created a phony call to the prison and talk with one of the representatives that said that Ferrero would be in jail for 21 days without bonds before being presented to the judge. They made a neightbor call and say that the night before there were a lot of police cars in Ferrero's house.

The show is from 6 - 11 AM and by about 10 AM they all said "Happy April Fools Day." I wasn't surprised but a lot of people were based on the phone calls. They also confirmed that Univision's phone lines were flooded with calls asking about the death of Cristian Castro.

Years before they said that Fidel has died and almost half of Hialeah went to the streets to celebrate. Hialeah is a city in Miami that has a very large Cuban population. A year after that they announced that Joe Ferrero had died. Because of all of these I didn't fall for the jokes!

This appears in Wikipedia:
"Suicide Rumors
Miami-based La Kalle 98.3 FM announced Tuesday morning, April 1, 2008, that Christian Castro committed suicide. The "report" turned out to be an April Fool's joke"

Christian Castro Suicide Report
By Karen Diaz
Apr 1, 2008

Did Christian Castro commit suicide? On Tuesday, a Miami-based radio station (La Kalle 98.3 FM) announced that the Grammy Award-nominated Mexican pop singer had taken his own life. But is it true? No, think about what day it is. The "report" was part of what many are saying is a really sick "April Fool's joke" and certainly that is accurate.

Ruth writes on Latin Gossip, "I guess they were so desperate for ratings that they decided to toy with someone’s life! The ONLY reason I turned to that station was because a friend of mine called me telling me what she heard. This is low, even for a station like that. Not funny at all and you need to hire some new writers. They are obviously all out (of) material. They are so ignorant that only they found their tasteless joke amusing!!!"

Kudos to that response. April fools jokes can be fun if they are well thought out, clever and actually funny. This seems more like absolute desperation and cruelty. It's nothing to joke about and is getting fire from all sides.

A couple of DJ's in Boston tried to pull this kind of stunt off about 10 years ago, saying that the mayor of Boston was killed in an automobile accident. It did not go down as funny as they thought it was. Friends and family and concerned citizens heard of the "accident" and it caused huge problems up there. The mayor's office fielded calls all day about this stunt. The radio station took so much flack over this stunt, they fired the 2 DJ's and I believe there was a law suit over this also as well. People need to think before they do anything. Obviously, some people dont bother.

I didn't care because I knew it was not true. There was nothing in the Internet about Castro's "death" and the Spanish TVs were not saying anything about it.

Every year they do similar jokes. Over time you get used to it!!!

I think it would have been of bad taste in any other day, but today its the day for these kind of jokes. Fortunately Hispanics in the US enjoy two days every year of jokes!

I remember 'La Movida' on late night TV years ago.

For a woman of her age, Ms. Castro is rather easy on the eyes.
