Charice Pempengco: Move Over Whitney?

#1 Postby whereverwx » Thu Apr 17, 2008 5:38 pm

Fifteen year-old Charice Pempengco from the Philippines is gifted with an extraordinary voice that is bringing her international stardom from countries all across the world. She has visited England, Korea, America, and several other counties. In fact, last December she was invited to the Ellen DeGeneres show where she received two standing ovations for her rendition of Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You" and Jennifer Holliday's "And I am Telling You I'm Not Going." However, that was not her last time in the U.S.; in May she will be appearing on the Oprah show, which was actually taped this month.

The Philippines is known for its talented singers. Personally, I believe that some of the most talented singers in the world lie in the Philippines. And one more thing, she is not lip-syncing.

Alright...and on to the videos.

I must correct you about the song "I will Always Love You". It was recorded by Whitney but she did not write it. Every record Whitney sold of that song earned Dolly Parton a royalty since Dolly Parton wrote that song when she left her singing partner Porter Wagoner to strike out on her own. I prefer Dolly's version of the song since it was a written as a tribute to Porter Wagoner

Wow, I'm surprised that Charice made it on YouTube's top viewed page two days in a row ever since her impressive performance on Oprah.

I almost have to say she is more American Idol winner material than the top 3 right now.

Ok, Here is just one of the secrets revealed. Charice was the surprise performer in the May 17 Grand Opening of the MGM GRAND FOXWOODS CASINO in Connecticut last night. David Foster formally introduces her as his 'newest baby'. And this is just the beginning. Here are the list of guests/performers:

Charice Pempengco
Alicia Keys
Josh Groban
John Mayer
Jamia Simone Nash
Catherine Zeta-Jones
Michael Douglas
David Foster
Quincy Jones
William Joseph
Nick Cannon

And here are the pictures:

She also attended the party after the concert:

Wow, that's pretty amazing! I remember when I first watched a video of her on LiveLeak back in November. She has come a long way since her performance on Star King and Little Big Star.

LATEST ON CHARICE: SHE is now officially a 'FOSTER CHILD'

==============================================================
Here is the latest update on Charice. She was supposed to sing only one song in the MGM Grand Opening concert but the crowd asked for more. So she had to sing the Dreamgirls songs (And I Am Telling You) UNREHEARSED with David Foster.

She received 2 standing ovations. The ONLY performer who received one even though Alicia Keys, Josh Groban and John Mayer also performed.!!!!

And yes, the next secret has been revealed already. She is going to be a guest performer again in the DAVID FOSTER & FRIENDS concert in Las Vegas on May 23. This one is going to be videotaped and sold as a CD/DVD this fall and aired on US Television as a special this December.

=======================================
Here is an article by RICKY LO:

http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/storypage.as ... yId=118662

FLASH: When it rains, it does pour.

No, it’s not a cliche as far as Charice (now minus Pempengco) is concerned.

After a landmark guesting in Ellen DeGeneres’ show (and then in those of Paul O’Brady in London and Oprah Winfrey), Charice shared the spotlight Saturday night with Josh Groban, John Mayer and Alicia Keys in a show organized by songwriter David Forster for the grand opening of the MGM Grand Casino-Hotel at Foxwood, Connecticut, USA.

Here’s the full report from immigration lawyer and STAR columnist Michael Gurfinkel and his wife Millie who were in that Foxwood event (it was the couple who helped expedite the issuance of the US visa of Charice and her mom Raquel):

Saturday, May 17, was the grand opening of the hotel.

David Foster put together and produced the very first show, featuring Alicia Keys, Josh Groban, John Mayer and, of course, the International Singing Sensation and pride of the Philippines, Charice.

Charice appeared just before Groban and sang a medley of the Whitney Houston hits I Have Nothing and I Will Always Love You (from the movie The Bodyguard which stars Houston herself and Kevin Costner).

Charice received a standing ovation, the only performer to receive one that night, and therefore the first performer at the MGM Foxwoods to receive a standing ovation.

Foster asked the crowd after Charice finished her numbers, "Would you like one more song?"

The audience cheered and shouted an enthusiastic "Yes!" Foster said that he and Charice would do And I’m Telling You...unrehearsed!

After they sang, the audience once again gave Charice another standing ovation. Among those in the audience were Quincy Jones, and Michael Douglas with his wife Catherine Zeta-Jones.

Backstage, Foster, Alicia and Josh congratulated Charice for her "phenomenal performance."

Next stop for Charice is the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas on Friday, May 23, where she will perform once again with Josh Groban, along with Andrea Bocelli, Michael Buble and Katherine McPhee.

No footage yet. But the concert on May 23rd in Las Vegas will be released on CD/DVD and aired as a special on PBS.

BTW, have you seen this HIGH QUALITY video regarding the COMPLETE Oprah performance of Charice? The excellent audio really makes a big difference:

Yes, I am Filipino and I have been following Cha's career ever since she lost in Little Big Star. I remember shutting off my TV in disgust after she finished only on 3rd place. This link below is one of my favourite Charice videos. This is a compilation of songs she sang in that competition. After hearing this (she was only 12 or 13 yrs old), I do not have idea why she did not win the title:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q7RtpMwmud0

This is a very emotional moment for her. She sang this right after she found out that she placed only 3rd in the competition.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eMC_5y9XIX4

I am just so happy because she is slowly being recognized right now. Not too bad for a little girl who grew up in poverty and was abandoned by her father when she was 3 years old.

:P OK. I am very happy that even non-Filipinos appreciate this young girl's talent. David Foster told Oprah that she is 'a force to be reckoned with'. I hope she moves here permanently to the US so can penetrate the US market. With Foster's behind her career we can expect bigger things to happen. I hope she becomes a US immigrant next year and audition for American Idol.

Have you seen these videos of Charice singing 'with' Destiny's Child and Fantasia? Well, they are not really singing together but from this clips below, you will see that she is at par or equally talented:

Fantasia is flat, and sorta boring. Charice is amazing. I think she could take on any big event from AI Winner (she really is better than both Davids) to the Super Bowl to the World Series to Dick Clarks New Years Eve to A Macy's Parade.
