What are you doing this Memorial Day?

#1 Postby CajunMama » Mon May 26, 2008 11:56 am

Pretty much the same everyday stuff for me. Memorial Day isn't celebrated down here like it is in the north. This year though i'm adding extra prayers for my sons best friend who is over in iraq and special prayers for my niece whose husband died from wounds he recieved in iraq in 2007.

I'm also cooking some meals for some dear friends and their extended family. The husbands father passed away saturday and the funeral is being held tomorrow. Other than that it's off to the ballpark tonight to do my concession stand duty.

I'm not from the south, but I live down here now......my wifes hometown.......and Memorial Day is a big deal here. Men from this community have given the ultimate sacrifice since WWII. Early this morning before sunrise....BMET for you veterans....a group of us met for a brief prayer at our Vietnam memorial. The remainder of the day will be spent in a quiet mode. I will BBQ my world famous vinegar base pork and drink beer. I will not listen to the radio or television as the memorials make me cry. Especially those soldiers that were truly acting above and beyond the call of duty. Y'all be careful.

We went to Bushnell to the Florida National Cemetary where both my parents are buried. We went yesterday to pay our respects - they had the :flag: lining all the streets - it is always beautiful to see. We usually go on Memorial Day but same as Dionne the memorials make me cry.

I paid my respects by researching a few Medal Of Honor recipients that paid the ultimate price not only for our freedom, but for their comrades in arms as well. Some of their stories are amazing. No links; best to start from scatch on your own.
